I recall hearing that that happens to a degree in the newer transformers films - plot and dialogue don't translate all that well, but giant robo-dinosaurs and explosions are the same in every language - make some of the stock helpful military dudes chinese rather than american and you have a billion-strong audience (well, a small portion of it, but that's still a reasonably large number in absolute terms, and it's a number that will grow as the chinese get more money to spend on non-essentials).
It's also an audience that's much less bored with big flashy action movies than the west. A win all round for them really

Are you aware that all the Chinese soldiers in the Red Dawn remake were digitally replaced with North Koreans, because China threatened to bar the movie from Chinese theaters?
It cost less to CGI thousands of North Koreans than to miss out on the Chinese market.
You can see it in The Martian too. The book makes no mention of china or their laughable space program, but in the film they make the point of altering the story so that they can be helpful end generally good guys.
