Within two pages, we have a light element that introduces a character, really, REALLY well, then the sudden jarring element of her death, which makes it MUCH more shocking than, say, Saw 4, where people are thrown at the screen like banana pudding at a ceiling fan. Light elements make for great horror games.

Yeah, bu the same token a bit of darkness helps make a game feel more hopeful.

A game where everything is good and nothing bad happens tends to get really dull really fast. But some occasional darkness helps break up the positive mood and make it feel better when you do surpass it.

That and it being a generally very heroic game make the occasional moment of 'No, you didn't save them' hit a lot harder than a game where you went in expecting failure. Something my players found out when they failed to save an AI they encountered.

If you just pile on the bullshit without ever giving your players breathing room, it becomes monotonous, and makes it really hard to become invested in the/your character's growth. Watching someone get knocked down and making their way back up is interesting, because you wonder if they'll make it and when/if they'll fall again. If you just keep pushing them down again before they can even rise, it stops being entertaining and just becomes bleak, disengaging, and just sort of pathetic. That's where 40k fucks up a lot. If you just pile misery on top of horror on top of tragedy, and explicitly make sure everyone is miserable all the time, it becomes monotonous really hard to give a shit
