I find that most music besides simple background stuff meant to be there, like tavern ditties, are distracting. Ambient noises are where it's at, especially when horror or suspense are necessary.
i feel like i've seen those exact words in a different music thread.
is this a new copypasta?
no but it's more than likely i'm autistic enough to make one accidentally
Anything by Two Steps From Hell.
WoW soundtracks are actually pretty decent for background arpegeening.
I'm currently using Ambient Mixer to create soundscapes for my campaign. Tons of fun and adds loads of depth to a scene.
At the moment I'm creating some ambient noise for a pit full of rotting cattle. Plenty of buzzing flies, crow caws and undulating flesh! Thinking of serving some hot cheese and bread just before unleashing it on my players.
Nostalgia just hit me hard again.
Also agreed on this point, although a simple drum beat is probably the exception.
This is basically the most D&D related album ever.
diablo II music is top tier. especially act IV.
I had been looking in Soundcloud for tracks that I can use for my Roll20 Iron Gods campaign.
The sci-fi part is covered, my problem is to find barbarian/sword & sandal feeling tracks.
I tried out some background music a few times, I really liked the assassins creed II soundtrack. But it never syncs well, so I stopped.

However, in another manner of combining music and RPGs, I've thought about maybe doing a campaign sometime based on Ayreons 'Into the Electric Castle'.
In my experience ambient music is distracting and/or, in the best case, unnecessary; I only use it when introducing my players to a new area, relevant character, when entering a dungeon or in narrative scene after killing a huge monster or accomplishing something important.
Anyway, most adventure/fantasy movie OST are useful, and even some tunes from here and there (the ost of Maleficent has two or three surprisingly good ones). Also, fantasy games. Music from The Witcher and WoW have been quite useful to me,for example.
WoW music works really great. It's specifically written as ambiance.
And unless you're group played WoW for long enough, they won't recognize it.
if you do this, ALWAYS use vidya game music.
They are literally designed to be not distracting; to be listened to while you do something else (usually playing the game).this same property carries over to tabletop.
Two Steps from Hell and some Audiomachine songs are better than any vidya trash songs.
There is a good tavern song from Battlestar Galactica too, so movies probably have some good songs but they are harder to find because
>listening to movies and shows' soundtrack
no one does that
Literally just filter your Youtube result to "playlist" and then literally just type "D&D music"
You then have literally thousand of songs at your disposal.
>tfw you never maxlvl'd your Sephiroth
>Two Steps from Hell and Audiomachine songs are better than any vidya trash songs
This is probably bait, but I'll bite anyways.

Dungeon Synth (it's a genre). Especially the tape Strahd's Possession by Corvus Neblus (since it's based on some dudes D&D-character. The stats are a part of the cover)
