Merfolk and Underwater Civilizations Image thread

Sure. I think deep sea fish are really cool so I've collected a bunch of related pictures.

I also a while ago homebrewed rules for playble merfolk in DnD, including a deep sea subrace.

Because I like being semi-educational, I'll alternate between posting a picture of a mermaid and the fish it's based on.

Absolutely based, her monster designs are always really good.

Ran out of mermaids that represent specific fish, so I'll just post some cool pictures.

I like her stuff. There's not that many deep sea mermaids that aren't just a generic anglerfish, and those designs actually incorporate notable traits of the fish. Shame there isn't more; I'd love to see her take on, say, the viperfish or the black swallower.

Yeah it's a shame. She focuses more on dragons really, but I've used a lot of her creature designs in my games.

A frogfish or batfish, I believe. Those are kinds of angrlerfish that walk on their fins, at least, although I'm not sure if the picture is one of those or another similar fish.

Yog-Sothot? Nope, just a siphonophore, a colonial organism made up from thousand sof polyps. These things can get ridiculously huge (if they weren't technically millions of little animals, they'd be the largest animals in existence by volume and leght, although not by weight), and look freakish as hell with masses of writhing tentacles.

these squid don't look to interesting but they have "toothed" suckers, hunt in packs and can kill humans.

They went through a ridiculous amount of diffrent reconstructions for the tooth-whorl (sometimes even placing it on somewhere other than the mouth, like on the back fin or tail), before finally finding a fossil they could use to determine its true position.

Iv'e got a good one; Tiktaalik. this was basically a fish that began the amphibian lineage, hell all terrestrial vertebrates evolved from this thing ultimately.

I've kinda been thinking about expanding on the home brew aquatic stuff I did for 5th edition with a deep sea "supplement", with some deep sea based raced and more monsters, maybe some class variants as well. How stupid an idea would that be, and does anybody have some good ideas on what I should add?

Iv played as a mer-koth ( mer-octopus like ursela) The DM used a pathfinder varient setting called cerulean seas. He was a tattoed sorcerer/wizard, but being an octopus, the DM was a bro and let me fluff up that part of his anatomy so he was able to shift his magical tattos around naturally. His spells were related to ink and from other varient books. His race was ment for more psionic based classes, but he used his mind to create sweet tats instead of mind-"not"-magic. Homebrew powers he allowed me to have were:
>made his own magical ink that was part shadow magic, part psionic, color changing, and like real octopi ink it had a numbing property making my char a very popular tatto artist
>was extreamly proficient in any ink or tatto related spells
the DM was reluctant to let me multiclass as a wiz kus I found alot of varient spells he could use with his special brand of magic, without going too mary-sue special snowflake.
>had a little cuttlefish tatto-familar that liked to stay in his chin and use its tentacles to mimic a beard
like a cross between poypey and davey jhones from pirates o't' carribian
>able to use a form of shadow-travel to teleport himself to any of his previously inked artwork, but ruin the tat in the process.
This was the DMs idea at first, used to bullshit characters meeting back up after 2 game sessionsof players not showing up. But I also used it during the final encounter, where a huge magical/devine explosion was used to sacrifice the party and kill the BBEG. I was kinda pissed he would kill off a cool character like that, untill I remembered he gave me that spell, and the character had also given the bartender of the bar every DnD game starts in (but this was all underwater) a fancy tatto as payment for drinks n shit.. So the DM reluctantly let my character survive by porting himself out at the last second at the cost of an arm and a few tentacles. So I just gave him a peg leg, hook hand, and eyepatch while his shoreleave-disguise.
