Tell me about your PC's parents, Veeky Forums.

A lady of negotiable affection from the low countries and a gentleman of France on the lamb from the revolutionaries. She gave up the game, he gave up thoughts of his past and they raised a small family were they settled with his cousins across the channel.

Entirely pleasant and rustic farmers. They saw a chance for their son to have a better life when a priest came into town asking for new prospects for the monastery, and sent him on his way to become a priest of Fate.

A faerie catboy and a regular catgirl.

Essentially nonexistent, since they would just serve as another way for the GM to railroad us or ruin everything. He made up parents for my character, but I avoided them.

Another PC's motivation has been to return to his wife and infant daughter. The DM said his wife went crazy after he left and killed his daughter. His daughter's vengeful ghost, has been trying to railroad us.

>Tell me about

Why did they wear masks?

A Witch Bitch Elf mother I set on fire and a human father who usurped a flesh/sex/death demon.

I'm not a witch, I swear...

He doesn't really remember his parents, he and his twin brother were picked up by the bad guys at an orphanage when they were very young.

They're actually clones of a former super hero that would "resurrect" himself by growing a new body and transplanting his mind into it

>A Witch Bitch Elf mother I set on fire and a human father who usurped a flesh/sex/death demon.

So who raped who?

Father was a fairly successful silver and grain merchant who tried to use his monetary clout as a means to entry in political office. Mother was a supportive, if clueless socialite who encouraged father to enter political office, not for the better but because it would be a status improvement.

Unfortunately father was executed after the imposition of martial law and a few whispered words from a rival merchant - he was accused of war profiteering from stockpiling grain and executed without trial publicly. The rest of the family was exiled from the city.

His parents are dead.

They were killed in a alley way after they took him to see a movie. They were also billionaires.

All I got for them in the way of back story is "Once ma got out of the army she went back home and married that cute farmer" and that was more of a way to justify how my character got her starting gear.

They're alive but not really important to her story. She does write pretty frequently to them though the DM has never said if they write back but that's probably to be expected, she is the black sheep of the family. you know, even after she saved a town and was knighted. Well, at least she has her uncle.

"Chaos. Chaos Israel." I put out my hand.

She blinked, shook it. Uh, OK. So...have you sued your parents yet?"

"When I was sixteen, actually. But that was just some business about my college fund, and the commune took my side, so I figured changing my name would seem ungrateful."

10/10

Her parents were poor farmers in what would later be known as Normandie. Her mother was a kind woman, but her father was cruel, and intended to send her to her own wedding with a back marked by his belt, because she refused to wed the pigfarmer down by the crossing.

She ran away to become a nun, except a garou found her and toyed with her, leaving her dead in the forest. Luckily, her mother-in-darkness came along to give her enternal life. And so my Salubri was born again.

A tiefling shadow sun ninja and an aasimar bard. The family made a habit of constantly planeswalking since their home plane got invaded by spelljamming mindflayers and then time-nuked.

Her dad, the tiefling, sated his innate desire to kill by hunting evil after a wandering monk adopted him as a child. He met her mother, the aasimar bard girl, through a mutual friend, whom she was documenting since he was pioneering time magic.

They went on a crazy adventure to stop a mageocracy from murdering the god of death, and helped to collect the Nine Swords, and settled down after the tiefling proposed. And it came to light that the time mage dude was responsible for killing a deity in the past, so they wanted to get away from him.

Mom and Dad are a pair of proud, if confused, Taldanes who put a lot of effort in sending her to Wizard School only for her to come home a good deal paler and with a sword instead. Still, successful adventurer child means they can retire early and comfortably! Now if only they didn't live in Riddleport.. And if only her boyfriend wasn't the son of Riddleport's current Overlord..

Two dirt farmers who farmed dirt on their dirt farm. They now take care of his sick wife and child while he adventures to support everyone.

PC's mom was an female orc watched named Murob. She was the strongest orc and ruthless and decides to come down from he timberlands she lives with her warband and try and take over the continent. Throughout her warpath she took many concubines. A poor man named Clancy specifically who was just a mere farmer but strong and worked hard. He had a family but Murob didn't care and to spare his family he made sure he was the only one they found and she he was taken and then eventually my PC was born but Murob would die giving birth to my PC and Clancy had escaped before realizing what he left behind.

Both are professionals
Mom is a high school teacher and Dad is an optometrist

His mother hasn't come up, she was probably a serving girl at a bar or something like that.
His father was the democratically elected ringleader of the circus who trained him in a variety of circus skills, including acrobatics, juggling, the harmonica, and sharpshooting, until he was murdered by a political rival who sought to use his death to become the new ringleader.
His Stepfather was the new ringleader, who adopted him primarily as a political move after murdering his father. My young PC was the only person who knew that he was the murderer, but no one believed him.
And that's why my PC joined the army.

>Using Freud

Well shit. My dude's mom is a lesser goddess who constantly stalks him and whom he may be in an intimate relationship with (thanks DM), or at least almost certainly was in the past. Dad is a farmer with his own life and family, that he barely knows.

Evil bandits who made a living raiding a village and the area around it, killed by the authorities when she was a baby because of that, she was taken in and raised by the church.

Her father's a blacksmith and encourages her to do what she sees fit, supporting her as much as he can. He's the most open to magic out of all the family, even going so far as to actively encourage her learning it.

Her mother isn't quite as keen on the whole magic and adventuring thing and would prefer it if she kept to a safer lifestyle but she tries to be encouraging, despite how much she worries.

It's just lucky they haven't met the rest of the party to be honest.

They're both tiefling doctors and very much alive and well.

A nouveau riche trader who bought his way into the aristocracy, married his way in to help cement the deal.

The PC is part of the patriarch's grand plan but balked against her planned marriage as just another of daddy's aristocratic stepping-stones, set off for a life of adventure over a life in the court. She is very torn about the situation however, she grew up with the young baron she was betrothed to, they were lifelong friends and hated leaving him, but couldn't bear to live an empty life of parties and court gossip.

She doesn't know how her first-and-future families' have suffered some political losses since her leaving, and her betrothed has set out seeking her return (financed by daddy) with a rather darkened disposition towards her running off...

They were moderately successful farmers from a moderately well governed and good natured nation. They were good and pious people, who grew enough to support their small family and make just enough extra coin to do fun things every so often. When their only son was drafted by the church, they were happy, but when they found out he was being shipped off to the leper colony to squire the paladin of the death god, they were fucking crushed. They were not allowed to see him again for 15 years. By the time he returned, they had retired, sold their farm and lived in relative luxury off the farm earnings, savings and stipend from their son being drafted. They were relieved to find he had not become a paladin of the death god, but that relief was quickly squashed when they found he was still a devout worshipper. Now that their son is technically a high ranking official of the church and a land-owning baron, they get invited to special lordly shit, but don't attend out of embarrassment at their son's profession.

An alcoholic soldier who is unfulfilled/hates his life and his commonly beaten submissive wife. Eventually the alcoholic in one of his fits beats his wife to death, their young son witnesses this, and to cope with the reality he sees his father as one of the 'demons' his mom would tell him about (If you don't go to sleep now, the demons will come for you).
He becomes a rabid Inquisitor

they are disappointed

and they are furries

Dad is a cop on Corellia, bit of a hardass, but what cop isn't. Mom runs a bakery, typical sweet old lady. Neither one knows their oldest son is a mercenary who just blew up some Imperial transports and he'd rather keep them in the dark about it.

Never really thought about most of them, they just tend to be vague nobles who are plot irrelevant.

ancient elven weaponsmith and some wood-elf ranger.

Father was the head of a major smuggling ring who did his best to be a good parent, but only really knew how to be a distant authoritarian, now even more distant because he's in jail. Mother was a disinterested gold digger who fucked off to South America at the first sign of trouble. The PC considers one of his uncles his actual 'parent', as his relationships with his biological ones are complicated at best.

He didn't know his parents but was raised by Sir Rikard of the Knights of Saint Orin to be a good upstanding person who tries his best to see the best in people even in the worst of places. After Sir Rikard's death, he joined the Order in order to carry on protecting the city in his place.

A miner, and his assigned breeder. Dad is a good natured goblin, who's proud to have created an adventurer instead of a worker, but has nothing to do with his upbringing. He likes to brag about it, even though everyone else would be more proud to have made a strong labourer. They just don't get it. There's more than mining and mushrooms to this world! We ain't slaves no more! He doesn't know his progeny is a dick ass thief.

Champion: They're alpaca ranchers. He's not on the best terms with them at the moment, but is considering how to fix that.

Dawn: They were killed when on business in Chiaroscuro when he was a young boy. He hasn't given them a thought in years.

Illusionist: They left her at an orphanage on another continent. She's hunting them down to ask why.

Rogue Trader: She's from a hyperreligious noble family. Haven't put any thought into her father, but her mother occasionally sends assassins after her because she's less than pleased that her daughter ran off to be a Rogue Trader instead of following a more pious lifestyle.

An anarchistic homesteader and a baby factory. Neither of them were good at coming up with names.

Good, honest and hard-working couple. He is a fisheman, she cleans the fish at the warehouse.

Childhood friend's older brother is a badass (low rank officer) so my character joined the military to be cool as him.

Father was/is a self-centered, upwardly mobile dragon-blooded High Elf with a taste for the finer things in life, such as becoming a Patrician, acquiring several slaves of different races, and concubines of both genders.
Mother was a human, second daughter of a Patrician family, quiet, but loving. Also shared father's taste in slaves and concubines.
Father was taken shortly after my character's birth and put into magic stasis by his Red Dragon Great x15 Grandma, as an ingredient in her upcoming dracolich ritual.
Mother died of old age.

Vegetable farmer and his wife
Theyr'e good people

It was a one night stand in Venice during the Carnival.

Bran's parents were farmers, solid and hardy folks who were proud when their son became a soldier, and died proud when he was a commander.

Vorkis' parents are noble drows from the Underdark, they didn't show that much affection for him - they never had free time for that. But he still try to send them letters.

Is it just arm-chair psychology or does it seem that the reason players neglect their parents is because they don't really understand or have personalties for their characters?

Mother was a minor noble who married father for his money by order of her father, but fell in love. Father is a major merchant specialising in tea, coffee, chocolate and wanted all his sons to follow him into the business.

It's more because in most games, the pcs are adults who have left home and begun their own lives.
It also ties into "what is important, your background or what you will do in the future?".

No, it's because we're fucking sick of putting effort into family onto to have them murderraped by DMs for cheapass drama.

Mom was the village witch, dad was the miller. Then shit happened, there was a bad harvest, and they ended up on the road trying to rebuild the same life in new villages each time.

It's hard to justify being a murderhobo if you have living parents.

Can you imagine holiday gatherings as an average PC?
>"Steve, your brother got a promotion at the accounting firm last month. Isn't that wonderful? So sweetie, how's your career going?"
>"Come on Mom, do you have to call me that? My name's Urgoth the Skulltaker now. And I killed ten men for the gold they were carrying and sold a princess into slavery."
>"That's nice, sweetie."

this

>implying medieval dirt peasants got promotions
You being an adventurer is probably the best damn thing that happened to your family in 200 years. You've seen more of the world in a month than they will in their entire lives.

Mother was a kind-hearted missionary sent up to the space colonies to help set up missions in the rundown slums. Father was a charismatic junkyard owner who repossessed air cars and had ins with the local drug cartels.

A survivalist ex-soldier and a hippie. Character turned out a bit weird, but alright

Raised entirely by her father after her mother ran away when she was born. Her father was loving, but his job as head librarian meant she was left alone for long periods of time. Despite being a delinquent as she grew up, she still loved him unconditionally, inheriting his love of romance novels.

>Freud
Dad is a retired Dwarf militiaman turned expert gunsmith and survivalist. Mother is a traveling herbalist and scholar (see: Witch) whom my PC most definitely didn't harbor secret fantasies about fucking.

Jehovah's Witness-esque squid cultists.

Mummy was a succubus and daddy was a brave dark slayer. I say was in the past tense - he's a big stain on the ceiling somewhere now. I am ever thankful knowing that when I die, I'll also explode into a big dark cloud!

An infertile famous pirate captain who wished for a daughter.

And the genie who raped her and got her magically pregnant.

A high Elven Archmage, and the rogue-ish bard who had a one night stand with her. They ended up abandoning him in front of an orphanage because neither wanted to deal with the child. Before he could be found, the slightly unhinged librarian of the giant magical library in the city took him in. He was then raised by his abusive library keeper foster father, and a magical book that acted as a communication device for an Great Old One.

He was not a well adjusted character, to say the least.

A pair of antisocial alcoholic ne'er-do-wells who taught him to lie, cheat and steal because hard work is for fools, even though they were still destitute as fuck and died young. Rather than becoming an all-out murderhobo, he decided to focus on the idea that a man makes his own luck.

Perished for the sin of their child's birth.

My father has been referred to by even demons as 'Father of the Unholy' and my mother is an alcoholic alchemist. One is an elf, one is a human.

To this day, I still don't know whether I'm the Unholy my father fathered, or whether he made some really fucked up cousins[/spoilers] for me to try and kill.

They were the best, most reliable, and loyal cloning vats ever.

His father was a burnout hedge knight, who humiliated himself in a tournament, and ruined his career. His mom was some merchants daughter who fell for PC's father before he ruined his career.

They're fucking great, planning on seeing them next time I planar shift to the afterlife.

Dad was a systems technician aboard a starship, and later a mechanic for a small private company. Big, kindhearted guy who died of illness about year prior to the start of the game.

Mom was a teacher up until dad died, now she's working 3 different jobs to try and keep the family (2 younger sisters) afloat. I've eased the burden a bit now that I'm sending a bit of my share of payouts from the jobs the crew and I do, and I'm working on getting them set up in a better living situation.

Her father was some guy chosen at random, her mother is an evil empress space dragon. Apparently if a world has sufficiently developed life, a common strategy of her mother is to breed with a native lifeform and leave behind the offspring to inevitably conquer the planet on their own, simply because of how much superior to everything else they would be. Then after it's done she just incorporates it into her growing space empire with the child as the planetary ruler.

All my PCs come from adventurer eggs.

Shit people who were basically hedonistic dickwads who abandoned him and never looked back.

Mother was sexually desirable and father's penis was intimidating.

His father was a quiet and passive fisherman who happened to be Orc. His mother was a noblewoman who wanted to live a life of adventure so she ran away from home.

He loves his mom and for the longest time thought his siblings and him were a product of rape and stockholm syndrome

...

Were they black?

Nope, both were Dwarves. Abandoned dwarves are basically outcasts and are treated like shit as a result.

Orked.

My character killed them by accident when he set his house on fire while fucking around with pyromancy. It's the dead-parent trope, but with a little more zing, I hope.

An Elf wizard married to an Elf socialite.

Her father is a rather prominent wizard that is marrying her off to an Elf doctor that specializes in Bioware. All good considering that she has the Type O body type, so he tests his latest bio augs on her.

Meanwhile, she's spending her 20's as a shadowrunner to get the crazy out of her system before settling down with her fiance.

a curious polymorphed wizard and a mare

So your character's a son of a jackass?

They were good people, albeit distant.

His mother and him simply had nothing they could ever talk about at length. He liked things that she didn't he preferred to do things she didn't like him to do and they just existed as a close but not that close mother and son.

It was much the same with his father. They had a common interest in boxing but once he took it up alongside anything else he could get, he kind of blew past him in terms of concept levels.

He was much more excited and supporting of his tourney participation but eventually they entered a sort close but not close relationship as well.

If he could he would send them letters monthly and phone calls. But he's not exactly going crazy because of his inability to do so.

His father is an artificer, still disappointed be became a Cleric instead of carrying on the family business, his mother is a rogue, and happy that he's happy with his life.

>thought his siblings and him were a product of rape and stockholm syndrome
Are you implying that they aren't?
