>By comparing genetic data with archaeological evidence, an international team of researchers led by the University of Oxford has shown that dogs emerged independently from two separate wolf populations (or more accurately, now-extinct ancestral wolves that are common ancestors of both modern wolves and dogs) that lived in West and East Eurasia. This means that two different populations of paleolithic humans independently came to the same conclusion: these intelligent four-legged animals could be bred to live and work among humans.
What makes a man befriend monsters and breed friendliness into them?
>In the days of old, two men commanded 9-foot-tall primeval wolves to fight on their behalf through sheer strength of will. One man from the mountains in the far reaches of the West; another living on the flat plains of the distant East.
Think they became enemies?
Isaiah Sanders
When we domesticated wolves, we selected for a variety of different traits, amongst them was low "flight distance", which is the proximity you can approach an animal to before it flees.
The wolves we began to take into our social groups and eventually breed were wolves who were willing, due to their own individual behavioural traits, approach humans more closely. Obviously you can see where this trait was driven to through artificial selection.
Why would our ancestors have done this? Honestly, I think the individual specimens that had the right behavioural makeup to be the first wolves we took into our society really just appealed to our sympathies. You're prepping a carcass for smoking around the fire, and this young wolf, body language obviously submissive, keeps surreptitiously nosing at your pile of scraps, you've got a good yield from this hunting trip and you're feeling good because grandmother made the rotten apple drink and you've had plenty of it, you start thinking the wolf looks goofy and cute and you throw it a bit of fat.
Camden Perez
Looks like the Eastern guy won:
>An initial population of ancestral wolves split into East and West Eurasian wolves that were then domesticated independently before going extinct. At some point after this dual domestication event (about 6,400 years ago), the eastern dogs traveled to Europe with their migrating human companions, after which time they mixed and partially replaced the earliest European dogs.
Hunter Phillips
Well, there's some theories that domestication was actually an accident, that instead of intentionally taming the ancestral wolves we just provided an evolutionary pressure that lead to them taming themselves. Wolves that were less fearful of humanity were more able to take food from us, but if they were too aggressive in the process we'd fight back. And wolves already have an established pack instinct for interacting with a controller of a food source that could harm them if not shown proper deference. So the theory goes that the wolves that redirected their submissive behavior towards humans, basically just hanging around the camp begging for scraps, prospered more than the ones that would attack us. And then with them being just a part of background life to early humans it was easier for us to adopt them as potential allies.

Will the same thing happen to Goblins eventually?
Jackson Thomas
Romulus and Remus once fought atop their dire wolves across the mountains and plains of Rome. Of course, it was much bigger then.

>gene data >fossil evidence >still no missing link
More importantly, what makes people conflate multiple vague theories into a computer model and then act as if the result was worth peer review?
Michael Peterson
Maybe if you repeat "correlation does not equal causation" enough it will become true.

Genomic and archaeological evidence suggest a dual origin of domestic dogs, Science 03 Jun 2016: Vol. 352, Issue 6290, pp. 1228-1231
Oh look here's the actual paper printed in a prestigious and well known science journal that takes really good data to get into.
Once again: >I, a random channer, am smarter and more knowledgeable about this issue than an entire team of scientists who know how to do science with evidence working in labs.

"Hey guys, look! I've found a new specimen that bridges the gap between these two previous ones" >Shaaa... Ya know what? Ugh-ugh! Now you have twice the ammount of missing links!

While this is interesting, I gotta ask what this has to do with Veeky Forums? Oh well, at least this isn't as bad as when a thread gets derailed into a political discussion.
Ryan Long
In what situations would and could humans domesticate fantasy monsters/space aliens?
Jaxon King
Problem is goblins are at least mostly sapient, so treating them the way we do dogs would be slavery.
Nathaniel Robinson
Whenever somebody greentexts "fossil evidence" like it's some sort of conspiracy or not worth notation, you may immediately dismiss their claim.
Hunter Gonzalez
Well, duh. But it shows up a lot in fiction anyway. The noble savage "Oh! You saved my life once now I am forever indebted to you and will sacrifice myself to save you if necessary" from that black moor dude in Robin Hood to Chewbacca.

basically this. plus the wolves that hang around act as alarm animals.

>What makes a man befriend monsters and breed friendliness into them? Nobody did that ever.
What you have is one pack animal understanding structures in another pack animals social order and applying that knowledge while domesticating them.
Wolf cubs have a lot more in common with dogs than grown up wolves. In a way dogs are a lot less self reliant, but also more perceptive of human behavior. It's a two way street. If your dog starts using you as an extension to get his squeaky toys out of the hard to reach places you've truly accomplished symbiosis. A wolf couldn't do that. Most dogs are more or less able to understand that a pointing finger is indicative of a direction without having been thought. Wolves don't.

Yeah, it's just like how they inserted that black guy into Shakespeare's plays and called him a "moor," which we all know is a made up word invented by liberal panderers. Everybody knows there was no contact between England and the Middle East during the Crusades! It's ridiculous!

Wolves and humans both hunt same prey. Humans try to work with wolves when hunting, and it brings success. Humans and wolves start to hunt together. Humans and wolves both notice similarities in size of genitals. Centuries of sexual exploration between man and wolf occur. Man wants wolf girl waifu so bad he creates legend of werewolf. Nothing ever comes from several thousands of years of attempted breeding. 2016, many women and some men can be found on the Internet having sex with dogs. When people answer honestly, they are less bothered by this form of beastiality than any other. Man still wants its wolf waifu/husbando, but now we are too ashamed to admit it.

But of course. History in general is a lie perpetuated by the liberal educational complex. There is no compelling evidence that the world, or indeed the universe, existed before the founding of the United States.
