There was only one way this could have ended.
You and the Ascetic, you were simply too far apart, too opposed to each other, and each other's ideals for any peace to exist between you. As you respect the gods, the Ascetic devoured them. As you sought peace, he drove the land to the brink of war. Even if you had no personal grudge against him, there was no way that you could ever find a middle ground. Even if, by some miracle, you could reach a compromise, would he really respect that?
No. You'd spent the rest of your life looking over your shoulder, waiting for him to strike. That's no way to live.
When you met him there, in the ancient devotional tunnels beneath the Dragon's Head, there would only be one survivor. Perhaps that had been decided long ago, when you were both born. Perhaps this moment was always written into fate.
