How good are GameScience Dice

I'm thinking of buying a new set of dice and I'm looking at GS dice because they look good. Anyone have any complaints or good things to say about them?

They roll wonderfully. However my GM went in with me for some and he hasnt stopped moaning about the quality of them. Saying that for "precision" dice they shouldn't have a blemish on them.
I fucking love mine personally.

>Saying that for "precision" dice they shouldn't have a blemish on them.
>I fucking love mine personally.

Please explain what he means.

Gamescience dice have sharp edges compared to rounded edges other dice such as chessex. They do not rock tumble them so there's an imperfection from where they cut it from the sprue sticking out.

Do you have to sand that down?

Emery board or X-Acto

Is it true these dice gouge holes in your wooden table with their sharp edges when you roll them?

That's why casinos tables have felt on them.

The more I read about people actually using these dice in real life, the less I want to buy them.

God, they look awful.
You want good looking dice?
Buy QWorkshop ones instead.
IDK how "random" they are but if you're not some kind of autist that needs lolperfect statistical distribution this is only solution.

How come?

Your friend has a valid point. For as much as they cost and how much they're lauded as precision dice, the least they could do is file down the bit of sprue.

They specifically don't, because it apparently doesn't have an effect on the randomness of the dice.

They aren't selling them for appearance, they're selling them for accuracy, so to them it doesn't matter.

The best

youtu.be/MRzg_M8pQms?t=178

It takes 2 seconds to get an exacto knife and remove it

You don't have to. It has less of an effect on rolls than uneven wear from rock tumbling.

I ordered some recently off Veeky Forums's recommendation. (The transparent ice ones.)

Honestly, they look like crap. Not aesthetically, I got what I paid for, but my D20 looks damaged when it's brand new. It has parallel scratches that span three faces (the scratches on 13 are so bad I can barely read it), and all of my dice have that little bump from injection molding or however they made the plastic. Plus the edges are frayed and the faces are scratched up to hell.

I got them inked -- boy, that was a fucking mistake. When I first got them, I thought I got an autistic twelve year old's art project. Whoever hired Michael J. Fox to ink forgot I wanted them to color INSIDE the lines.

That said, this was my first set of dice, so I don't know if they're all like this or if I just made a bad purchase.

I ordered 3 glow in the dark D20s, and they were flawless, just inked them myself

are you sure you didn't buy the reject dice they sell for cheaper?

I ordered them here: gamesciencedice.com/7-Piece-Ice-Polyhedral-Set--Plain_p_121.html
I'm starting to think they fucked up my order. I'll send them an email and find out.

Are you sure they aren't meant to look like that? If you zoom in on the picture the D20 is covered in lines, and so is the D6 there

might just be a thing with the ICE dice

This is next level autism, but I can't stop listening.

His whole life has been making dice and RPGs man, he's living the dream

The scratches on the faces are probably normal, and those don't bother me much. But the shitty inking and pic related really bother me.

His voice is exactly what you'd expect, too. It's just mesmerizing.

Might have just been unlucky, usually best just to ink them yourself though, best thing to use it just a crayon, just rub it on and wipe off the excess

Now I know. Thanks for the tip.

if nothing else you could just return them and get another set

There's a 40 minute video from him on how to ink dice

youtube.com/watch?v=zaDzqYZufIQ

He's not a great speaker, but you can feel how he surmounted most of the pitfalls of poor speakers to still show confidence and get the message across.

Well of course not, he's a giant nerd/dork.

Is this how it feels when people hear me make off-comment jokes?

OP here just went and placed an order.. Hope they're okay..

They really are just nice dice. Plus the company is finally back, they were having some issues a while back and didn't even have their website functional

Also, I miss old spoony 4:10

awesomedice.com/blog/353/d20-dice-randomness-test-chessex-vs-gamescience/

Gamescience dice really do roll better than regular dice, even with the blemish, which once removed will have little to no effect on the roll.

Pic related is from a test where they did not sand down the blemish on the D20 they used. If they had that problem with the number 14 being rolled less than it should would not exist.

I really like them a lot. I know that when I play a game I'm getting about as close to true randomness as I can reasonably get and don't need to worry about a bad die that is biased towards rolling low numbers.

If you don't want to use Gamescience then obviously nobody is going to pitch a fit, but I know I like having a die that isn't going to be nearly as biased towards certain numbers like Chessex dice do.

Jesus

He is the true grognard

Not going to watch, but I'm going to assume his pitch week go like this:
"People always ask how much the bit of sprue changes how our side roll, but dice like chessex are very uneven and don't even stack well!"
Then he'll continue in a patronizing tone as if he considers his audience to be incompetent morons.

Well, the sprue changes the die roll, sure. But that's why you get rid of the sprue blemish. Then the die is great.

What, exactly, is wrong with his reasoning in the video (once you get around to watching it)? Sure the difference isn't world-ending, but these dice really are better than Chessex. At least when it comes to actual balance.

It's not that the sprue blemish changes the die roll, it's that the process that other companies use to cover up the blemish creates an uneven set of faces on the dice in the process of polishing, thus rendering them biased towards certain numbers. He goes into other points as well--apparently most dice are actually weighted unintentionally towards 1 or 20 because of how they are cooled.

>buy dice that objectively look shit
>because the manufacturer - who
>charges triple the price for halving
>costs - wants you to believe that his
>claims of mathematical precision are
>vital to our enjoyment of RPGs

Yeah, nah.
It's just straight-up snobbery.

Had a pair, used it for like 8 sessions, amd went back to Chessix.
I will say that if you want good dice, get clear or translucent ones, and make sure you can read the numbers for both you and your DM.

I like em mainly because of how they don't go flying off the handle when I roll due to how they're manufactured. The blemish is easy to remove if you ever built a model in your life, and mine oddly enough didn't have a blemish but more of a tiny concave sadly.

One thing I don't like however is the D6 and the D8, mainly because those are too mathematically precise in their molding and are quite uncomfortable to roll. Also as mentioned, the inking of the numbers was pretty lackluster and some numbers actually began to run from extended use. I remember an user way back filling up the numbers with crayon wax and it looked nice, so I might try/recommend that when it comes to it.

>Q Workshop

You mean the dice made to be super "fancy" but end up being unreadable at a glance unless you're extremely familiar with them? Those things are fucking terrible unless you're banking on the poor readability to let you lie about rolls.

Never had the problem despite having two different sets and my other players using another three of theirs

I don't particularly care about how precise they are, but I do really like dice with nice sharp edges. For that reason I like them a lot.

I generally ink them myself when I get them though.

>q workshop
>good

Is this bait?

>tfw smokey gem dice are back in production and should be on the shop soon

Why bait?
Show me dice available on the market that are better on aesthetical quality grounds.
And muh "superior randomness" doesn't matter unless you're total sperg, even if the dice aren't super-balanced and shit they provide decent enough element of chance.
As long as this is about gaming for fun and not fucking gambling or some super-competitive wargame tournaments (and both of those mostly use only d6s) it doesn't matter.

Actually, it does affect rolls if you don't cut it off.

See image, nub is left on a d20 opposite the 14.

All other faces still roll better than Chessex

>Ink
Use crayon

>grognard

A grognard is someone who is fanatically attatched to an game system and won't acknowledge flaws or the possibility of other systems being better or just as good.

>charges triple the price

Where are you buying them? They're only a coupl

People heard it was "going out of production" when production shut down when he bought it back, so a bunch of price gougers bought out limited stock to relist at triple the price.

>dice quality
Email him?

He sold the company, the new people made shit dice, he got pissed and bought it back because their quality was so shit. There's a mountain of shit "Gamescience" dice on the interwebs now from when he sold it, now rebought and price gouged.

>They're only a coupl
e dollars more.

What the fuck keyboard.

Well I could see how you'd be able to use if when everybody you know is using them. To the rest of us, especially people like me with shit eyes, all I can see in that thumbnail, which on my monitor is about how a set of dice on the other side of the table would look to me, all I see is incomprehensible squiggles on polyhedrons.

>Show me dice available on the market that are better on aesthetical quality grounds.

Any plain translucent or transparent set by Chessex, especially the frosted sets that were out for a bit. They're nice to look at, easily legible at a glance to anybody, and likely will take much longer to wear away to the point of being unreadable.

Wiz Dice, baby. One of their big bags of dice is similar in price to a Chessex Pound O' Dice, they come mostly in full sets, and I like their colors better.

Also, I can't find it on Amazon anymore, but Wiz Dice used to offer a large dice bag along with a full set of every dice they offered for a good price. Wish I'd grabbed one before it fucked off.

I'm sure your "I pulled a 'nugget' outta my ass" opinion tops real science like Perhaps next you'll tell us about how vaccines caused your autistic behavior.

I want a set of stainless steel table busters that have an extremely high degree of randomness

1d4
2d6
2d10
1d12
1d20

who are fabricators you would recommend commissioning such solid stainless steel dice from?

I'm not buying this for practical reasons, but because its something to blow money on that I think is cool.

like how some people buy luxury cars.

>actually typing out a
>point like this is somehow
>going to make me take you
>seriously at all whatsoever

If you are okay with them being 3D printed and hollow shapeways has some dice sets
shapeways.com/search?q=Dice set&type=product&facet[materialGroupId]=2
then there is also artisan
artisandice.com/order/steel-dragons-dice/
But the steel dice seem to be out of stock

I like that it's nice sharp edges but I like my traditional dots on a d6.

How would you rank dice from certain companies?

In terms of typical mass production dice?

Top Tier:
Game Science

Good Tier:
Chessex Transparent
Wiz Dice

Standard Tier:
Chessex Opaque

Unreadable Tier:
QWorkshop

neat.

Oh, I found gmdice.com/dice-sets?material=48 as well. Polite sage for doubleposting.

Forgot to click submit like 20 minutes ago. derp

>titanium dice
Fuck those look good. Lightweight, I'd assume, too!

They so good but I'm too poor to afford them.

Speaking of which, best value for money dice?

Would you buy this?

>artiscam dice

I like how they are still charging 200 burgerbonds for their plastic dice.

D4s are bad enough, I don't need more caltrops.

I like the sharp edges. What are the odds of actually getting these imperfections?

If by "imperfection" you mean the sprue nub, then zero. You can sand them off yourself, but they will all have them.

As for the other imperfections such as the lines across dice faces, a quick perusal of my assorted gamescience dice (I bought a pound of their factory seconds, so already below average quality) I would say that roughly one in every ten dice has a hair scratch on it, but they are barely noticeable. One or two of them, out of about 100 have noticable imperfections that probably would not make it past quality assurance in normal dice runs.

Translucent dice are ugly as shit. Is it just chessex or are all opaque dice dubious?

Game science and wiz dice both have consistent quality between opaque and transparent.

The difference between science dice and standard dice is imperceptible at the table so I really don't worry about it.

All I want are metal dice that are easy to read with nice, sharp edges that don't look like shit. I've looked at all the websites posted so far, and looked myself elsewhere, but this is shockingly hard to find. Everywhere that has nice ones is out of stock or outrageously expensive, though it's usually both.

In terms of six-sided die, you can't get much better than authentic casino dice

Popping back into the thread, because it didn't fuck off. amazon.com/gp/product/B01476QV14/ref=s9_al_bw_g21_i2

If you need dice for all of your friends or just like to have a fuckton of dice, buy one of these.

No, grognard, like neck beard, was term used to reference other tabletop gamers before it became a pejorative phrase. Grognard now means those who stick to the traditional practices and editions. You can't have a 4e grognard but you can for ADnD.

Grognards are the followers and keepers of the old ways.

eh. i guess definitions differ then.
By the definition of "nostalgic single system superiority fags" definition though I've met 2 4e grognards

I've only tested one die, a Chessex speckled d20, but boy were the results disappointing. I got barely half as many 20s as I should have.

With that said, the Chessex d16s I got way back in the day had a very high number of defects (maybe 1 in 10). This was back before Game Station was involved, by the way. Still, the dice that weren't fucked up are pretty nice.

If you break the data into four sets of 500, you see a decent bit of consistency with the bias too. 7 out of the 20 numbers never hit average in any of the sets, staying either consistently above or consistently below it. A roughly equal number have the sort of range you'd expect to see, with the last third displaying bias, but crossing average in at least one of the sets (even if only just).

>Q "Hey guys, I got another 20!" Workshop

>Another dice thread
>End up on amazon and 4 other sites looking at dice
>Nearly buy at least 10 sets yet again
God damn you all. I don't have money for this.

OP here GameScience dice arrived today. They look good but a few nicks on the edges..

Mine have a bunch of blemishes and molding errors. Like, partially filled bubbles, so they can't be fixed. They also suck when rolling since there is almost no weight to them and it's uncomfortable to shake them since the sharp corners prick you and prevent smooth rolling in your palm, especially with d4s and d6s.

I named my set "the dice of pain" and gave them to the player who was late that day. They were new players who were borrowing my dice anyway. They were a punishment to use

I also had an older DM(mid 40s) ask me not to use them since he though they were sketchy, since he didn't know that they were specifically made to be balanced(even though mine had holes)

Basically, they aren't fun to roll, they make no real difference since the 'error' they fix is statistically insignificant for the limited number of times you roll them(unless you roll them several hundred times per session I guess), you have to manually paint the numbers in, they cost about as much as prettier, more fun dice, they can seem kinda sketchy to uninformed veterans, and they're sharp and potentially painful.

I'd only buy them again if I wanted to hurt myself more.

I was just about to say "you're as blind as Spoony" but now I feel bad just for thinking it.

I will say I'm short-sighted as fuck and I never have a problem with them, though. Just don't take my glasses away first, please

>Fucking bullshit all over the face.
Dice need to produce random numbers that are easily legible. Sacrificing clarity to put fancy decoration on them is a net loss. Looking pretty is secondary to basic functionality.

The slight increase in randomness is not worth the increase in price. Buy them if you want to be a prancing la-la homo man snob about owning 'precision dice', otherwise stick to more affordable random number generators for your games of make-believe.

>I can't read

You need to be able to quickly and easily see other people's rolls from across the table in a room that isn't necessarily brightly lit. There's no reason to junk up the faces with a bunch of decorative trash.

This guy here.
I contacted them and they're sending me a new D20. I still have to deal with my inking decision, but that's on me.

All's well that ends well.

Yes and no. In total, the dice is more accurate on average than tumbled dice.

BUT on the face with the blemish, it's less accurate than tumbled dice.

Fill in the numbers yourself. Easiest method is to use crayon, or to use paint, and wipe off the excess with your finger, not with paper. Paper sucks the paint up, the finger sort of squeegees it off cleanly so you can wipe off the excess without removing paint from the numbers.

I already ordered them inked. Next time I will.
Or get because HNNNNG
$70 for a single D20 doesn't fit in my budget, unfotunately.

Jesus fucking Christ those are bullshit levels of expensive. I'm talking about their "Alchemist's Dice" selection. Fucking $120 for a set of transparent green dice?

Well, I know what dub shit I'm getting myself for my birthday.

Yeah. But if I would buy from them I would not buy plastic dice. So I kinda don't care about their, admittedly bullshit, prices on those.
The purple heart ones are sweet. but 103$ is quite a lot for me. At least for dice

I mean I'd probably get the aluminum ones because they're the cheapest and ultimately the only reason I'd care about these dice is because they are precision machined. But as it is, I can just get Gamescience for $13 and cut off the sprues.
