Song of Swords: Yoooooooo (clok)

Last Time, on Song of Swords

Titplate revisited
Regarding Halberds
Colossal Shadows
Constitutional Bardiche Carry

Song of Swords is a realistic fantasy tabletop RPG that draws inspiration from historical fechtbuchs, weapons and armor. Its combat system is fast and it can be used for both fantasy and historical/mundane settings.

Call of the Void is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

Here's a .rar archive with the newest version of the rules as well as all related current working documents. At this time the latest version is v1.9.9:

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
The room might be empty, but the people who teach the game still browse the thread frequently. If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.

I was reading about Song Swords wayyy back when--I want to say like 2 years ago but that feels like a long time. I'm glad to see we're still kicking, though I still doubt I'll ever get to play it. This kind of thing really intimidates the kinds of plebs I can drum up.

I hope all your fechty crotch stabbing is going well, anons.

Not just that, we have rooty-tooty-shooty sieg hailing now to.

Last I looked I was making a Janissary for a fecht I never got to participate in. I like to think he would've been pretty rooty-tooty-shooty until some much more able user removed kebab

So, has anyone figured out what time the battle royal is at?

If you don't mind online games I'm sure people would be interested in having another player. There was a guy looking for a game set in Fantasy Algeria or something.

has any progress been made on uneven combatant stuff?

like 3v2 or 4v1 sort of combat stuff?
still hoping this could be a usable system for my campaign.

Yes, actually. Group initiative has been greatly simplified by the introduction of a phase-based turn system for determining when you go. Once people are in melee, things can still be a bit sluggish if all of them are bound up in one swirling melee, but 3v4s and the like logically tend to become a large number of pairs with one 1v2, which is much more manageable.

It's doable if the 1 understands the combat system. As expected, however, it can be incredibly difficult unless the 3 or 4 are just jobbers

Yeah, the Ballad stuff has been a huge upgrade at least to that game, I can't wait to see SoS rebuilt around it.

and this is why I come back time and again...PROGRESS

Slow, incremental progress that comes like tearing teeth out, but progress none the less.

>Slow, incremental progress that comes like tearing teeth out
as long as they aren't MY teeth I'm okay with that...

Alright, the tourney will be taking place at 17/6/16 (UTC+10) at 0300 same timezone. I'll post a roll20 link in the sheet and here when I'm finished with it. If you can't be there, put a message somewhere. I'll probably see it eventually.

everytimezone.com/

Pretty sure I can't make it - Etzli

I can also do 18/6/16, if it helps. But that's pretty much my window.

Guess what. I'm retarded. How's 19/6/16 0800 local. That ends up with 18/6/16 and ~1600 at the earliest for you guys, bar one who'll have to be burning the midnight oil with me.

So 3 AM in Sidney is like, 1 PM East Coast US?

Closer to noon, but yeah

>I can't wait to see SoS rebuilt around it.

too bad, you gotta wait like we all do.

That's, like, 6pm Veeky Forums time (Eastern Standard) if I'm calculating this properly.

Should work for me, the UC fucker.

If I'm doing the timezone magic right that would be midnight from saturday to sunday. Works for me I think.

But I gotta admit, that I don't really know the rules too well, so if you want a more fluid tournament I can go to bed early, or spectate to learn first I guess. That would also be fine by me.
-TeXguy

Wait, is that Friday or Saturday in burgerland? Stupid date line.

If my schedule weren't so restrictive I'd look into it more but I'm really only available on Wednesdays from like 10am-5pm EST

If the tourney isn't today I can run you through a crash course in the roll20 in the afternoon

aww, that'd be nice. What timezone are you in? UTC+2 here

It's probably best to base this off of Veeky Forums time for simplicity, rather than everyone converting from UTC.

i'm at -6 here i'll be free for the next couple hours if you are around

Eh, sure. Just gotta make an account on roll20.

Ah fuck. my computer crashed and now windumb installs updates.
Sorry, I hope that it gets that shit done quick

Shit, another crash just as soon as roll20 loads.
I'll try with another browser. If it still crashes I guess I gotta withdraw from the tournament

Are the Zells supposed to be Slavs, or Germans? Or is it both. Do they have ethnicities like humans?

There are definitely ethnic groups within the Zells, tribes I think. They might all share a common language though.

Banded Zells are ethically different. The inner sea Zells seem to speak Slavic languages in translation, but they all actually speak in whistles and beeps that don't fit any human language.

Well they do sail around in Zellislavas.

I for one welcome our squeaky overlords.

That's a good time for me.
-BP

I think they have the ethnicity of "nazi".

Sark's guys, maybe. The rest seem pretty chill. Old Radovan is too based to be a fascist.

Realistically speaking, they don't really seem like literal nazis, they're just racists who hate humans. The whole Zell thing really sounds more like actual communism than National Socialism.

It's just that Sark is so clearly the Eternal Aryan out to screw the world over yet again.

Do you think Sark knew about that demon lady when he gave the ruvians a ride?

Sure, what's Veeky Forums time?

Disable "convert to locak time" or some similar option in the settings of Veeky Forums.

I meant the timezone, but alright I guess I can force this.

It results in 1800 Veeky Forums time for . Does that help you?

Oh, okay lets see. Utc+2 here. Here its 12:38 going by the post times displayed when convert to local time is disabled, Veeky Forums time is probably utc-4

UC fucker again. I won't be able to make it to the beginning of the tournament. Would anyone mind taking him up and playing him until I'm able to get home?

Since I've only heard from two of them, and I cannot contact the others currently we're going with the plan outlayed here . I'll be seeing you then gentlemen, and bring your murder game. And remember; Wetzt die langen Messer auf dem Bürgersteig

That'd dull the shit out of your knife.

So, Saturday at 6pm Eastern Standard it is.

The Zells you see with Rade Sark are Tesshechtites of one tribe, who were based not on Germans, so to speak, but on certain tribes of the Belgae of Northern Gaul during Antiquity. Essentially the predecessors of the Belgians.

These guys were said to be a fearless, martial tribe, almost spartan in their austerity. They refused to drink alcohol (something you can see in Drosaico's behavior) and abhorred merchants and niceties in general. The Tesshechtites are the Zells who most humans are familiar with, because they're the only tribe that really advertises itself. They are very fond of the idea of uniformity and protocol, and are notorious for writing down events as they occur so that they can be reported at the Moot every hundred years. Their histories are, in fact, so accurate that they are coveted by certain Genosians, and many are the tales of Paladins who have tried to reason with the Zells for a transcript of certain events. Sometimes they comply, but never for free.

But the Tesshechtites are just one Clan. The Dakonats, who worship Yog-Dakon, the God of Hunger, are more Scandinavian in character, with the Branded Zells (The Yoti) being a sort of bastardized Zell-Viking-Native American mix.

The thing that connects them all is the Old Zellish tongue, which, while it may take a little while for distant tribes to work it out, is mutually intelligable between all of the Zellish cultures.

The reason so many Zells are stereotyped as Slavic is because there are more Zells in the Interior Sea of Vosca than there are anywhere else, and they have long spoken a dialect of Osterbijan that developed back in the days before the migration of those people onto the mainland. This is essentially a Slavic language, and is viewed by Zells in the same way that Latin or Greek is viewed by modern people today. It is acceptable, even cultured to draw a name from that pool rather than from whatever native language one speaks.

Hey, Jimmy, can you tell us about anything spooky that lives in Krajina? Ancient Albish spirits, things the Osterbs brought along, things like that? Something that a small, rural party would encounter, of possible.

Kickstarter when? Hasn't 1.9.9 beena round a fucking year already?

1.9.9 is not the kind of book you want to Kickstart, especially with the Ballad initiative update in the works to basically fix everything.

Yeah, I know, let me rephrase my question: 2.0 when?

When all of mankind stops masturbating, causing Baby Jesus to finally stop crying.

lets be honest the next update will be 1.991

god

Well certainly. I think I've mentioned the Dobarcuu before--it is native to the Slivers, and to the many pools and marshes of Kyrnhau and Albion especially. The Nobles of Krajina largely ignore these creatures, since they are never personally inconvenienced by them, but the Unkindlies do try to keep their populations under control.

There are other creatures, however, less obvious and more difficult to hunt. The "Fashers" are one such creature. A breed of troll, hideous and shapeshifting, they dwell in the swamps and call out in their hollow impressions of human voices, to lure the unwitting into the bogs where they can be played with and then devoured. The Unkindlies consider killing one of these trolls in single combat to be a rite of passage for the upper eschelons of the order.

Of course there are countless varieties of monster spawned by the Dark Watchers that inhabit the land, this has been common across Vosca--particularly so in the Slivers--ever since the Age of Beasts rolled around. These creatures have no individual names, but they are easily recognizable for having more than four limbs, as no native creature--excluding Drakes, of course--has such a morphology in Vosca.

Certain undead are also unique to the Slivers. The So-called Droggs, or Kuzlacks, corpses of the many battles of the Civil War who were not properly buried, and sank into the boggs, where they were inhabited by dark spirits or animated by other foul energies. These undead, superficially representing zombies or mere corpses animated by Dark Pyromancy, are unique in that they possess at least some intelligence, and are capable of working together to hunt still-living humans to add to their grisly bands.
These creatures are a source of grave concern for the Krajini government, largely because they have a tendency to "snowball" out of control if not dealt with quickly, and can come to threaten even large cities if ignored.

>Age of Beasts
So monsters haven't always been around?

Are droggs like traditional zombies in that people they kill will be inhabited by spirits and rise as droggs?

They've always been around, but recently the stars have aligned (according to Church scholars) for an increase in monstrous activity. This has been borne out in fact, and records indicate a dramatic upswing in monster attacks.

Yes. Even corpses not killed directly by them will rise unless decapitated or burned, so they tend to build up numbers just walking across the countryside.

are there any places people can't live the monsters are so bad?

People that die in their general vicinity, or just people that were wounded by them and died later?

It's rare. Such places are usually "cleaned out" by local authorities before they become too big of a problem. However horrible monsters may be, there are almost no threats too terrible for a thousand well-armed men to deal with, and a Kingdom can muster tens of thousands, if its tax revenue depends on it. A giant may have been a terrible threat a thousand years ago, but these days even the lowliest kingdom has dozens of cannons sitting around, and bored engineers who could use some field training.

Places that are made inhospitable by monsters and remain so tend to be places which would have been of negligible value to begin with, whose colonization is further complicated by the presence of treacherous beasts. This is not a setting where beasts rule the wilderness--the burgeoning nation-states have already driven such abominations to the corners of their lands, except in countries (like the Krajina) so ruined by war and internal strife that they can no longer project power throughout their own lands.

Not even those who die, years-old corpses can be resurrected by even one passing Kuzlack. A graveyard can become an army, a battlefield can return to unlife. These creatures tend to wreak havoc on recently war-torn countries. Mercifully the Dacians have avoided this problem thusfar because human corpses are valuable--they make for good fertilizer, and heads are taken to be preserved in mausoleums--but even so, there are horror stories of entire track-wagon trains full of bodies reanimating spontaneously.

A popular play (horrifically based on real events) details a hundred-car trackwagon full of reanimated corpses rolling into Vedrim under its own power, and the ensuing massacre that nearly overthrew the entire nation's capital. With the army away, only the Navy under Emanuel Zoak and his handful of marines were on hand to defend the people of Vedrim.

Ok, can anyone give me the rundown on how does Void Magic works in Ballad of the Laser Whales? I've been reading it and still haven't figured it out.

Okay, so, if you are a Void User, you have a pool of Void Capacity. You can spend this void capacity during your phases to use Void Powers. Some powers use your action for the phase, some use your movement, some are instant. At the start of each round, your Void Capacity refreshes, putting you back at your full Void Capacity.

So, for example. I am an Initiate void user with 7 ADR. and 4 Willpower (Wip) (4 WIP+ 6 Initiate Void User = 10 VC). For Phase 1, I execute a Flash, putting me at 5 VC, having spent 5 to Flash. Phase 2, having Flashed to a target the previous phase, I use Winds of The Netherworld: Vortex as a Shoot Action, spending 3 VC to activate the power, then putting in 2 VC as X, my attack dice. Phase 3, I have 0 VC, and cannot do any void witch shit. But the next round rolls around, and my Void Capacity refreshes, giving me 10 VC to use over the next three phases. Phase 1, I Flash away for 5, out of combat.

I'm really shit at explaining systems, but I hope that sorta helps.

It absolutely did. Thank you so much, user.

That's a fucking adventure if I've ever heard one.

Ayo Jimmy hold up are droggs from Krajina or Dace

Sounds like they show up in both places.

I believe they're native to the former, but sometimes spread to the latter. Or Drogg are everywhere, but only big threats to those two.

>He doesn't laßt die Messer flutschen in den Judenleib.
>He doesn't want Blut muss fließen knüppelhageldick

It would make sense if they were native to Dace and came to Krajina. The rulers of Krajina are from there, after all.

The SoS Threads: Where Nazis, Communists, Libertarians and Homosexual Catholic Mystics congregate to discuss their plans for world domination.

The alternative name also sounds slavic. You'd think you'd notice if you had a zombie on your boat, though. Maybe they weren't physically transmitted there, but it instead has something to do with some magic practice the Osterbs do that causes that shit to happen wherever they go.

Wait, didn't the Krajini royal family originally rule Dace? What if it's a curse on their House, and Dace has them because according to feudal law it's technically a territory of that family?

I would never use the word flutschen there. Sounds too goofy. Maybe gleiten or sinken

I don't think anybody ever accused neonazis of being good lyricists.

I think that's an actual original SA song.
Maybe it sounded less kitschy back then.

Previous versions of the song exist as far back as 1848 (as far as I am aware, might be an even older one) originally having been writen for the revolution.

I do not know of an 1930s-1940s version, but something like that may exist. However I'd say that it doesn't quite fit in with the military songs of the time (at least those I know), which seem to emphasize loving your nation, being loyal and that kinda stuff rather than lynch justice.

I think "fahren" could actually fit pretty well in that context if you're okay with its old school usage.

Dem Ritter fuhr ein Schlag ins Gesicht,
ein Spaten ihm zwischen die Rippen.
Er brachte das Schwert aus der Scheide nicht,
und nicht den Fluch von den Lippen.

What was the Drogg situation like after the whole Iron Horde debacle? We're there shit tons of these wandering around? Were entire fortresses occupied by sentient undead?

I always appreciate when ancient evil curses follow obscure feudal property laws. Cursing a family in the Kaselreich must be a nightmare.

So playing M&B I have just established my own Kingdom, naming it Chiron. What color should I set my Kingdom to and what should I name my knights when I found a Knightly order?

>playing PooP

Ooh ooh, Red, and the Sternritters.

Really it should be the Ritter or Reichsritter.
Sternritter or Sturmritter?

The Krajina royal family were from Kalmacia, not Dace.

>not importing your own banner

Get fucked up by too many Rogue Knights at an early level there user?

Desire to know more intensifies

I get to name the Knights and there man at arms differently. The Sternritters are made up of nobles aren't they? Do they have a supporting non-noble branch? If not then what are the names/titles of high ranking Cheronite soldiers?

>not following cool /mbg/ memes

That's the flag of Chiron.

Tourney's in two hours, right? Has the link to the Roll20 room been posted?

It has not. I am still working on this damnable ghetto for you to shoot up

If you like I can post the link, but the room is but an empty waste as is.

Nice. Thanks man.

Oh damn, that's 2 hours later than I had calculated. Damn Timezones.
I hope I can stay up that long and still be fit enough to play.
Sorry in advance if I can't make it guys ;_;

What do you mean, it's due to start -10 minutes ago. I'm just trying to gussy this shit up for you

Here, get in. Sorry for the blankness that'll be fixed momentarily.
