Thousands of people were standing in the bleachers in the hot sun on a summer Saturday, their hands over their hearts as they stared out to the flag waving above the great big projection screen. The Judges, their judging vehicles (Various Kettenkrads, Sdkfz 247s, etc) separated the small Lafayette Girls Academy team from the much bigger George Washington Military Academy team. Unlike everyone over in LGA whom were fidgeting and looking around during the Star Spangled Banner, GWMA’s girls were all chin up, chest out, spirits high.

And when the Star Spangled Banner ended, the announcer was keen to say, “Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen. The Elimination Match between GWMA and LGA will begin in four hours.”

You place your helmet back on your head, then try to get the strap back on. “Here, let me help ya.” Stack walks over, then happily fixes your helmet strap beneath your chin. “Jeez, Ellie. A little early to be putting the helmet on, ain’t it?”

“I know,” you mutter. “But look at them.” You and Stack look to see the GWMA girl still standing in disciplined formation, with their officers checking each and every girl for anything slightly out of place. “The scouting report said they were supposed to be impetuous.”

Stack smirks. “Also said they was disciplined.” She punches you on the arm, making you flinch. “Come on, you ain’t scared of a bunch of tryhards, are ya?”

Stack squints. “Who the hell calls people palookas anymore?” You roll your eyes, folding your arms. She points to Griselda speaking with their commander, a very short girl wearing the standard blue, white, and red jacket along with a white miniskirt with black thigh highs. “Come on, Griselda’s talking with them. Let’s go introduce ourselves.”

“Wait-“ you hold your hand up as Stack starts dragging you over. “Wait! It’s meeting between Commanders, and-“ Before you know it, Griselda and Carolina Greene are looking at you. “… Hey!” You smile, holding your hands together in front of you. “My name is Elodie.”

Griselda grins, motioning to you for Carolina. “Carolina. This is one of my Officers, a real natural in the commander’s seat. Her name’s Elodie R. Zumwalt.”

“’Ey!” Carolina shakes your hand vigorously. You noticed that her helmet is stacked upon with leaves and camouflage, her cheeks are packed with freckles, her green eyes regard you very carefully, but at the same time she looks absolutely fucking insane. “Everyone calls me the Swamp Fox.” She points to an M24 Chaffee in the back with the other GWMA tanks. It’s painted a navy blue, with white stripes along the turret, with white blue chevrons inside the stripes. “That there is my noble steed, Bucephalus!”

“I always did like the Chaffee,” says Griselda.

“Yep, yep!” Carolina smiles proudly, folding her arms in a smug manner. “We pride ourselves on our selection of mounts for any situation, and the Chaffee most importantly is the best option outta all of ‘em. I daresay, if we had these during the Revolution we’d have the English sorely beat without needing the French.” Well, that’s probably because everyone back then had muskets and cannons at best. “Anyway, I heard of you, Miss Pool, and you as well Miss Zumwalt.”

You nod. “Thank you.”

Carolina stands on her tiptoes. “Say, where’s the uh…” You and Griselda tilt your heads. “Where’s the commander of your big Brit tank? The really big one. I really wanted to meet her.” She gently pushes past you, looking around to find Iris.

Griselda smiles a bit. “Er, Iris is busy convening with her crew, sorry.”

“Hmph.” Carolina harumphs. “Well, tell her that she makes good use of a Brit horse.” She points to you. “You too.” She smirks. “I already put in my preliminary votes for the All-Star match, you might be on there.”

“I’m flattered,” you say.

Carolina rubs her chin, smugly grinning at the question. “George Washington Military Academy has a proud tradition of equestrianism, Senshadou, and education! We martial ourselves, thrilled for the day that we may eventually be enlisted into service for the US Military as happens in other Academies like Robert A. Heinlein or von Steuben Academy.”

Griselda nods. “So you’re all basically in JROTC.”

“To call our education program a glorified JROTC is an insult to the complexities and the martial tradition we take into our everyday lives!” says Carolina. “… but it is basically JROTC. However, we get to ride horses! And not just the brave steel horses we take into Senshadou but real actual horses!” She points to a couple of horses in a prefabricated stable. “All those horses are mine, the Saddlebred is my commuter horse, her name is Lily of the Valley. The Standardbred is my pleasure ride and her name is Daisy, and that feisty little girl the Kiger Mustang her name is Edelweiss.”

“Wow.” You blink. “You own three horses?”

“Well, I own ten. The rest are back home.” says Carolina. “Why, don’t you?” She seems genuinely clueless to the fact that normal people don’t own horses.

“Ah, I see.” Carolina nods slowly, grinning. “Well, like the great Swamp Fox of youre, I must disappear and tend to my own crews!” She whistles quickly, and immediately her saddlebred horse Lily leaps out of the stable and comes towards her. She expertly climbs on up, then grabs the reins. “Good day to you!” She snaps the reins, and immediately she goes galloping away.

You, Griselda, and Stack stand there. “Well. She seems nice,” says Griselda.

“Hmph, I don’t see what’s so great about horse riding,” says Stack, folding her arms. “But, I guess to each their own.”

Griselda nods. “I should start ironing out the last kink in our plans. Elodie, go ahead and get yourself squared away. Match is gonna begin sooner than you might think.”

You, Griselda, and Iris look over a map on the turret of her M4 Sherman. “So, the plan is we have a single tank defending the northern edge. I’m assuming that’ll be a fast tank. Our heavies, the IS-2, the Pershing, and the Churchill will be in the center in the town. And the rest will be to the south.”

You nod. “With how dry and hot it is today, there’s going to be a lot of dust today. We might get tricked if they notice that.”

“I know, I don’t want to commit too hard to one area though,” says Griselda. “However, splitting up against a team with fast tanks like GWMA is risky, even if they’re not exactly the best team. We’re not Black Forest Peak that’s for sure, they’ll pick us apart if they keep us separated.”

Iris pipes up. “Perhaps we will cross that bridge when we get to it.”

“Right,” says Griselda. “Ellie, which end do you want to defend in? I can take the other end.”

That's where I stand for now, but I will defer to the others if they explain in a way I can agree with.

I'll support since I'm a SoLanon and can't tell a tank from a truck.

Better to have Griselda with the group, than us with the group and gris-gris out all on her lonesome.

Griselda nods. “Good call. Alright, we’ll go with that. Everyone set?” You and Iris nod. “Good, good. Alright, let’s get everything squared away and set.” She checks her watch. “Match starts in half an hour.” And with that, picks her helmet off the turret roof and calls to her crew. You and Iris dismount off of her Sherman, now proudly bearing the name Janus on the barrel by white paint.

“Right, first battle as an Officer I think,” says Iris. “Hopefully it goes well.”

“You should be fine, Iris, you got a pretty simple assignment.”

“A lady makes the simple look incredible,” says Iris. She plants her hand on her chest, smiling at you. “Good luck to you in the match. Hopefully I don’t end up the last gal standing again.” You shrug. You wouldn’t want to be in that position either. “Tata.”

Right, time to- “Hey, hey, solnyshka!” Wait… That’s not Oleg. You look over to see-

You blink. Oryola Kuznetsov. She sits in the now modified driver’s seat, grinning as her eyes barely crest over the lip of the hatch. You walk over while Josephina stares at her, confused. “O-… Oryola. Wh- sh- shouldn’t you be with your team? You have a match set this weekend too!”

She waves you off. “Off-day. My subcommander assures me she can win day, da? I go back for flag match, but I wanted to see how this went, da?” Oh, oh! “I see you modified seat for freakishly large driver! That is nice of you!” Josehpina blinks. “Oh, no offense!” Oryola bonks herself on the head. “My bad, you are not freakishly large. People call me freakishly strong. Sometimes it offends me.” She looks back at you. “I just wanted to wish you good luck, da?”

She waves you off a bit, smiling. “I know you will. I look forward to seeing you in the postseason if the armorcraft gods will it.” She shrugs a bit at that. “I will say though, the headmasters of my program have been trying to stifle the competition as of late.”

Josephina gasps. “Oh yeah, there are rumors of them trying to get a post-war tank through.”

“Da. They might be winning actually,” says Oryola. “Truth be told, I prefer to fight in the SU-76 or the ISU-152 but if the school wills it, so shall it be done.” She hops out of the driver’s seat. “I should let you get to your match.” She wipes her dirty forehead, then wipes it on the hull of your tank. “Again, Udači!” And with that, she leaves.

Josephina pulls out a rag to wipe off the mark she left, but you quickly stop her. “Don’t.”

All of you commanders are lined up in front of the screen. The Judges begin their announcement. “The Elimination Match between George Washington Military Academy and Lafayette Girls Academy will now begin!” Griselda and Carolina shake hands amicably.

Alright, so while we wait. Here is the kill stats as of right now. I'm not even going to attempt to add additional stats like hit % or anything like that. Just the numbers that matter. Nothing fancy, but here we are.

Was it really necessary to make that a PDF?

Upon looking at it now, not really. I just used pdfs for archival for other quests I have done. I'll probably just take basic screenshots in the future.

“Oui!” she calls. Oliver the Cromwell starts moving forward, speeding away from Iris’ group and Griselda’s as well.

Isolated from most forms of help if they attack. That’s pretty worrying. “Hey!” Ingrid calls over the radio. “Josephina, how’s the seat?”

“Well, it’s not really a seat anymore,” says Josephina. “Oleg removed most of it.”

“Oh, that can’t be comfortable,” says Winona.

“It’s actually incredibly comfortable now that I can somewhat move my legs how I want them,” says Ingrid. Good girl, Josephina.

“This is Iris, we’re already seeing dust to the far northeast where GWMA is supposed to start.” You pull up your binoculars and spy out in that direction. A huge smoke cloud, grey and brown, is rising up. Yep, they’re on the move. But you can’t tell how many are moving in which direction. It seems like the big dust cloud is actually getting bigger and moving in all directions!

“Keep to the plan,” says Griselda. “Elodie, keep sharp. Recall Serafina to your position if necessary.”

Serafina gasps. “Is it time!? Can we join you, commander!?”

Surprisingly, data entry didn't take too much time. At least something like this. If I had the numbers, it's fine. But I'm not going to stress you out by trying to come up with numbers that are mostly arbitrary. That's only for people with zealous fanaticism like Ingrid with baseball.

Is anyone else surprised they didn't add more Hellcats or Chaffees to their roster match?

You keep peering out at the immense dust clouds approaching your location. Hm, it seems to you that they’re using it for cover definitely. Question is, how many tanks are there in that cloud? Are all of them in one flank? Are the rocket tanks holding back? Are they equally distributed?

Ugh, this is gonna bother you.

“This is Griselda. We’re reaching our rally point. Do any of you see any tanks?”

You continue scanning, then spot a Chaffee or two through the dust cloud in the northmost cloud. It’s not Carolina’s. But… “I see one, a Chaffee coming from the north. I can’t tell if it’s alone or not though, and it’s way out of my range.”

“Hold fire. Let them come to us.” Ingrid and Stack turn out, looking out at the dust. Griselda issues another command. “Iris, establish defensive positions in the town, but don’t dig in too deep. They might try to flush you out with the rockets.”

“Affirmative,” says Iris.

I still suspect a feint, but supposing it is rockets, we may want to cautiously move up a bit.

We have a couple ways to do this. Number 1 we withdraw southern flank. They may not simply have the speed to get to position before it gets taken.

Number 2 we wait until we see the whites of their eyes, so to speak. They're obviously an old fashioned MA, we wait in formation in the town until we've got them nice and close and blast them.

And get Nona to start doing her ranging calculations for that Chaffee, so we can cold bore kill it the moment it rolls into our effective range.

Stuka rockets on the Panzer 35H are ridiculously innaccurate and actually have a pretty short effective range, not to mention only four rockets per tank. I think they'll save them for the heavies most likely, where we're bunched up.

“Keep the engine idle, Josephina.” You keep watching the cloud of dust and smoke. You do see that Chaffee there,.

Now you see the silhouette of more tanks. Count them. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7… 8… 9… 10… 11.

Oh shit.

“Griselda,” you call. “Trouble. I have 15 tanks total coming to attack the north. I see the M24 Chaffees, the Panzer IIs, and the rocket H35s. They’re all coming down from then north. We’re still out of range.”

“Roger, we’re gonna-“ There’s a loud bang on her end. “Ah hell! It’s the BT-7s! Don’t engage them if you can help it, there’s way too many for you to fight!”

Alright, alright. You take another look. The Chaffees are leading the charge in a flying V, with the Panzer IIs in behind them in a line, and the H35s further behind. They’re still out of range, but it could be minutes before they get into firing distance.

When we need to fall back, we move into the ambush locating (in depth positioning, rolling defence)

“Stack, the camo net!” She nods, turning out and hurrying to the stowage bin. “Josephina, full reverse, take us into those trees!” Oliver the Cromwell starts moving backwards into the copse of trees, thick enough to block sight for the most part.
