Student loans are normalized in society, but at the end of the day they are your choice. You can't say the same about income tax or real estate tax, which is literal extortion by the government on threat of force for non-compliance. You agreed to a contract whether you were smart enough to realize what it meant or not.

Either a contract holds weight in a legal system and business is able to be conducted, or you live in a society with no legal recourse against people who violate willing contracts. If your country is stupid enough to offer some clause that implies they expire, and you take advantage of that, then I see no problems there. I just didn't believe any country would be so retarded.

I don't have any student debt. I didn't take loans. I got scholarships making it 20k a year (cheap for me and my friends) and then my parents paid out of pocket. Then I dropped out and now I'm not going to pay my parents back. Society has brainwashed people into thinking they need to go to college in the first place.

I'm now in Uganda, working as a graphic designer and a DJ - mostly cash in hand. Living costs are so low that life is pretty good in the sunshine. Just hoard as much of your loan as you can and bounce with it once the course ends.

That's just the burden we bear. Its really a trade off: we spend all the money, build all the equipment, train all the personnel, etc. In exchange we get to control everything and have great decision-making influence.

There's no other way it could work though. Imagine trying to coordinate a world military jointly run by Britain, France, Italy, Germany and the US as coequal partners. There would be lots of inefficiencies and poor communication. It would be a logistical nightmare. One country HAS to do the whole thing, and that country should ideally be the richest out of them all. We also have a martial culture and literally need war to survive. That's why we do it.

As for the free college meme, its the same as free healthcare. It works in small homogeneous countries in Europe, but that doesn't mean it could easily work in America. I'm personally a fan of Obamacare for healthcare and I don't know what the fuck to do about the scam that is college.

To be fair, you can easily pay less by going to college in a cheaper state, but that requires management by you and your parents to qualify for residency in said state. I went to college in Florida, and graduated with very little debt. Like any other purchase choice, there are cheap ways for those who sincerely want to pursue them.

Public state universities (think University of California system, Ohio State, University of Arizona--all of those) charge lower tuition rates to in-state residents. But you can't just move to a state and get the in-state tuition rate immediately. You have to live in the state for a while to qualify, usually for a year or more depending on the state. Different states have different rules.

How is the quality of life compared to say, Dar es Salaam? Wikipedia says Kampala is rated as a better place to live but I don't know much about East Africa.

Qualifying for residency in the eyes of the university is what I meant. You can declare residency in any US state as a US citizen, normally on the requirement that you can only be a resident of a single state at once, and maybe provide a proof of address or a paycheck. What a university considers eligible for in state tuition and what the US considers state residency are not the same.

Now to use the word state as in country, renouncing US citizenship is difficult. It's normally not hard to acquire a second citizenship as an American, but your income in that other country may be subject to taxation (which is what I think is referencing, but it's not really the sense or scenario I wad using the word state in).

The universities have that system because the state government incentivizes them to do so to prevent the state from losing intelligent (high earning/tax paying) individuals to other states.

I've been paying since the last decade and I still pay them now. I could pay it all off immediately and not worry about it but I prefer having the cash on hand for investing and leverage.

its so easy just call your loan servicer, DO NOT default they give deferals so easy. The first time I got a deferal I was making 50k a year and said I cant afford to pay cause of expenses(credit card, wife doesn't work) they gave me 1 year of 0 payments. The second year I was temporarily not working and got another 1 year extension on no payments owed. even the phone representative recommended me to just keep on getting deferements and eventually the loan will be forgiven, he said i'll be grandfathered under some obama thing(got my loan 2014). as long as you don't default on a payment and call them a couple days before due and tell them your having problems they will work with you.

if a state lowered it's out-of-state tuition fees that would effectively do the opposite; it would welcome many other intelligent, high earning, potential tax payers to come live in the state. if even one state had a state uni with low out-of-state fees, it would get exponentially more applications, which would force the school to be much more selective, which would make the school look better first of all, and second of all it would mean that the people applying to study in the state would be the best of other states
