Previous Thread: PLACE YOUR BETS

Both are degenerate threats to humanity that need to be purged.

Both of them are evolutionary dead ends. Along with the Jovians. The Hyper-Corps, the Titanians, and anyone else not trying to perfect Seed AI technology.

>there are memesters in /epg/ who joined the Ultimates to fight TITANs and exterminate humanity and become uberymen and think they're the greatest fucking thing in the universe

Nigga I'm just here to bugger some aspirants

pretending to be classical and/or norse gods and railing cute boys seems to be the distinguishing feature of true transhuman civilization across the system

what work would you do if you had to live on extropia for a year?

Pay my security bill on time.

>fucking fascist pigs go home!

>create seed ai
>not to become a seed intelligence yourself
Topkuk

I'm just gonna eat some computronium, seems like the easiest way

When was that implied?

...

Bump for TITAN killers.

>Our enemy is a distributed network of replicating intelligent superobjects, warbots, nanites, and computer code.
>Oh, let me get my bolt action rifle.
>That ought to do it.

>bolt action rifle

>21 century memes
>FUTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh, sorry

bolt action assault shotgun

...

You can't waifu yourself though, that's just wrong.

You fuckin' know you'd screw your fork.

I'd only screw myself if I could change what we both look like.

Easy in a synthmorph with a false skin.

Why bother with an inferior body that I can't impregnate?

My reading comprehension is apparently subpar.

Are you okay? Have you been infected with a virus? Do you need someone to restore you from backup?

Nah, he's good. Leave it be.

Enjoy diseases, suffocation, and bleeding to death biofag.

What are the more sexually erotic types of infection that would actually be appealing to someone that has been living on Mars for 20 years and isn't an exsurgent?

I hope one day the people who got together to write Eclipse Phase see this question and realise what they've done; the logical conclusion to everything they have done leads to a group of strangers on an anonymous image board discussing sexually erotic infections on Mars.

Send them a link to this thread then.

No. I'd like a few more books for Eclipse Phase to come out before they're completely demoralised and disillusioned by the horrors they've unleashed.

So you're going to wait 5 years?

It makes me wonder how dated the game will seem in five years time really. Eclipse Phase was released in 2009, so it's almost seven years old already. How long will it be before the technology seems weird and kind of dated?

In five years time, or ten years time, will we be chuckling about how Eclipse Phase didn't predict the rise and eventual ubiquity of certain bits of technology? Will we be looking back at this in the same way we look at, say, the old Cyberpunk 2020 RPG, I wonder.

In "Seed AI". The "A" stands for "Artificial".

It's clearly semi-auto.

Maybe. On the other hand Eclipse Phase technology is magic and can do pretty much anything.

The devs probably won't be able to even for a while after Trump becomes president because it will just be like wow I mean don't these people know it's the current year, so if you do plan on trolling them I advise you to do it now while they're still able to react.

>On the other hand Eclipse Phase technology is magic and can do pretty much anything.

I was thinking more along the lines of, let's say, what if something came along and challenged successfully the smartphone model? If the Internet-of-Things doesn't really take off? If 3D printing is relegated to the history books as a non-starter? The predictions that Eclipse Phase makes about the trajectory of consumer technology seems like a fairly safe bet, but I presume that the writers of early cyberpunk fiction considered that wires and tape-drives were future-proof safe-bets too. Oh, and mohawks.

>In five years time, or ten years time, will we be chuckling about how Eclipse Phase didn't predict the rise and eventual ubiquity of certain bits of technology? Will we be looking back at this in the same way we look at, say, the old Cyberpunk 2020 RPG, I wonder.

What happened there?

we laugh at how everyone was plugging their brains into their guns

We laugh at the idea of progressive muslims. Wait. We do that now.

>What happened there?
Consumer technology moved in a direction that the game didn't, so it seems kind of dated. You've got fancy pocket calculators, pocket televisions and digital audio recorders that are "the size of two paperback books stacked flat". A modern science fiction game is more likely to go "you've got some sort of personal, portable computer that can do all these things", because that's pretty much where we are at these days.

I guess it's the problem with all science fiction stuff really - you've got to ground it in modern day of the time of writing so it's generally accessible, and extrapolate from there. Just wonder how long it'll take for Eclipse Phase to get to the point where we look at it and go "why would anyone bother with nanofabrication when we've got plumbuses?".

...

It sucks that we aren't allowed to touch any of the stuff in this setting without getting space AIDS.

Just don't go anywhere in the AA and you'll be fine most of the time.

But user, the AA is everywhere. They are legion, and they neither forget nor forgive.

That's not right at all.

Then why does everyone and everything I see burst into gribblies as soon as I see them?

Are you drunkposting?

No. I'm totally sober.

Then you're just normally shitposting.

Would a collapsible airship morph offer any significant advantages over a conventional Kite morph?

not really. Also that's unfappable even for airplane porn.

It's particularly noticeable in cyberpunk because the setting deals mostly with the near future. After thirty years of reading about how this or that technology or social trend is just ten years away you begin to get a bit sceptical about the predictive skills of writers.

Looking back at the various editions of Shadowrun is pretty illuminating as to how our attitude to technology has changed. In first edition computers are mysterious and a bit scary and only for use by specialists. Even the simple act of making a phone call could require a side adventure to locate a working pay phone. By the 4th edition deckers were barely a thing and everyone could use their comlinks to wirelessly hack anything.

I wonder what disruptive technology will be making our games look dated in another 20 years

Hardened-against-emp electronics would be a great excuse for everything being so bulky, and also why you need a separate device for everything. Like the bulky, eighties-ish devices in Alien Isolation. Keep that in mind for more classical interpretations of cyberpunk, and as an excuse to run your Eclipse Phase game with such anachronisms.

The whole intergrate everything into one gizmo idea is pretty new. The best example of hilariously redundant technology I can think of is Star Trek TNG and their data slates. Can build a warp drive, can't store two documents on one device

...

...

The problem with that in Eclipse Phase is that basically everything is already really EMP hardened.

>The problem with that in Eclipse Phase is that basically everything is already really EMP hardened.
Except the way that they hardened them was by using the words "optical computing" and "Faraday cages" like they're fucking magic.

when it comes to EMPs yeah a fucking faraday cage is pretty much all you need and you're safe.

Please tell me how you're supposed to have your components protected by Faraday cages while you're also using wireless energy transfer and are constantly connected to the mesh.

That's fucking disgusting.

To be fair, it does say that EMP will burn out your antennas

It says nothing about how batteries and laser emitters and sensors are shielded. Anyway, shielding from EM is dependent on the intensity. To shield against higher intensities, you need thicker conductors, which adds weight and bulk. Ectos, for example, would be completely fucked by an EMP grenade, since there's no way that something that thin could be adequately shielded.

...

...

Uh no, the ecto would be protected by a Faraday Cage. Learn to hard sci-fi, idiot.

Faraday cages are 100% effective against electrical fields, not against electromagnetic fields, sophomore.

Ignore him everyone, he's just a Jovian flat, they probably don't even teach physics there.

...

An EMP that intense would also cook human flesh. You may as well use a frag grenade.

>they probably don't even teach physics there.

But we do. We call it Catholic physics.

It's troll physics with gratuitous crosses and Virgin Marys.

Faraday cages will work against magnetic fields if you build them right. Thick conductors with small holes.

Also,
>100% effective

>and as an excuse to run your Eclipse Phase game with such anachronisms

While it'd involve mutilating the timeline of the game a fair bit, I'd want to run a game where players chase down a drifting, derelict ship laden with anachronistic technology, and the subsequent hunt for someone with the knowledge of how to successfully recover the data from the old tape drives on board. Failing that, I suppose, it could just be run as a simulation for training purposes, or something. Good old simulations, enabling holodeck-episode style breaks from your regular campaign of finding exsurgents, working out where their faces are and then trying to shoot them in it.

My favourite part of science class was the New Testament.

read for EMP protection, it's more practical to use a solid conductor, which is why it wasn't mentioned.

Superconductor-based quantum computing instead of quantum optics. Much more efficient and easier to miniaturize.

Because you're the infected one, not them, Typhoid Mary.

one of my players has an idea for a character [which would be played by two characters]

one is a tinker/infiltration type. good with her hands, skilled and so on

the other is a disembodied AI which fucks shit up digitally. sorta djinni style.

She suggested having a small, robotic body which the usually disembodied form utilizes. What'd be a good shape to use? is there a cat or raven body which i haven't seen?

Why is this one character? This is just two characters, one of whom uses the ghostrider of the other a fair amount.

If you want a fancy cat-like body, a Wobblycat from Firewall is pretty primo. There's also the Blackbird, a *really* stealthy robo-raven.

yes
>one of my players has an idea for a character [which would be played by two characters]

i did mean players instead of characters.

is blackbird in firewall?

The Blackbird's from Transhuman, page 189 I think

I'm still a little confused about what would make them a single character. Are they partners or something?

single character concept, played by two characters and two players. players coordinating their concepts and stuff

Quick question: Does the synthmorph vector thrust mobility option allow me to navigate in vacuum or do I need an EVA pack for that? The book mentions rotorfans or something and that sounds like it needs air around it...not looking for rocket boosters, just sort of maneuvering jets.

It sounds like it needs atmosphere, but at the same time many systems like Ionic and Rotorcraft explictly say they do not work in vacuum. I feel like it'd be weird for them to be no vacuum-possible mobility systems in the core book, but worst comes to worst, you can probably install the Gas Jet System (I think that's in sunward) on a synthmorph.

If you just need maneuvering jets, there's the gas jet system which definitely works in space. Thrust Vector is kind of ambiguous, but probably doesn't.

I still don't see how that makes them somehow single concept. There's one guy with a ghostrider module, and then there's a different guy who lives in other guys ghostrider module. This is literally what 99% of infolife characters do if there's no mesh or it's compromised, unless they get a portable server for more horsepower.

_Every_ player coordinating their character concepts together has been the default in all my groups.

...

If you're running a Firewall campaign, part of the purpose is to have a motley set of characters with completely different points of view, but with the same overarching goal.

New to the system and the setting, I just showed this character sheet to the GM and he asked me how she might end up involved in adventure-y stuff. Can any of you help me justify it?

...

Implying the Ultimates aren't.
