HOME IN THE SKY: ALT-HISTORY SPACE COLONY GAME

The year is 2050, in an alternate universe we will never see. The Cold War never ended because the USSR never fell. Low burning proxy wars have finally erupted into full blown WW3. Both the American headed Union of Atlantic Allied States (ATLAS) and the USSR’s renewed Communist International Bloc (COMINTERN) are in shambles as the Earth burns in nuclear fire. However, all is not lost. Both COMINTERN and ATLAS, as well as a few independent players, have constructed thousands of ARK Ships to settle a new frontier in the sky, finding new homes for the people of the Dying Earth.

You will command one of these ships, settle on a new world and rebuild civilization. But first, who is your benefactor?

1 - ATLAS
> ATLAS is an Alliance Bloc and loosely federated group of Capitalistic and Socially Democratic Nations lead by the United States, Great Britain, the European Union (itself led by Germany and France), Australia, Japan, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

2 - COMINTERN
> COMINTERN is headed by the USSR and their chief partners, China and Brazil. Though slightly smaller in population than ATLAS, COMINTERN is more than capable of holding its own in terms of Science, Industry and Warfare. Though largely Communist in character, more Moderate Socialist countries (Brazil, Poland, Ukraine, Greece) balance out the Alliance.

3 - ORION
> The ORION Corporation is the chief financier of the Diaspora Project, and has made an absolute killing off the sale and manufacture of ARK Ships to both the Soviets and ATLAS. As such, ORION has also launched a small number of “private” ships, loaded with refugees and their own personnel, intent on carving out sovereign territory for themselves among the stars.

4- SOMEONE ELSE?
> Many self-interested groups with enough resources have been able to scratch together enough for a small ARK ship or two. Who you are, or who your benefactor is, will be dependent on further questions.

Space is boring and requires a lot of hard work. At the end of the day, we just want to stomp spiders for loot and get in cliche conflict and intrigue.

ORION obviously

>Your colony ship is a private ORION ship, loaded with highly trained and effective personnel. You will not be bound to the petty conflicts of ATLAS or COMINTERN.

What is your destination?

Note: ARK Ships are capable of reaching speeds of over 99% the speed of light, but cannot exceed them. The ships are administered by an AI administrator while the Colonists are in cryogenic stasis for the journey.

1 - LOCAL SECTOR

> Settling the local cluster means competing directly for planetary settlement in systems such as Gliese 581, Tau Ceti or Alpha Centauri. Expect to be sharing a planet with other colonists.

2 - HYADES CLUSTER

>A open star cluster with many complex, multi star systems some 150 light-years from Sol. The Hyades, though distant, is prime real estate; many of the exoplanets surveyed are highly likely to be habitable with minimal infrastructure or easily terraformed. However, you’re still gonna have neighbors, if not on your new rock, then very close by.

3 - THE BLACK

> Your destination will be a distant exoplanet or star cluster. It’s possible that other charters may be headed in the same direction, but you could easily end up all alone on an equally lonely world out in the black.

what kind of planets are there in the Hyades cluster and The Black, is there any xenos

I feel like the black sounds fun

Let's go to the black

I like my destination how I like my coffee.

>> Your destination will be a distant exoplanet or star cluster. It’s possible that other charters may be headed in the same direction, but you could easily end up all alone on an equally lonely world out in the black.
Ooh this looks like fun.

a fresh start

My internet went down, but I'll have the next part up in a minute

> An ORION ARK Ship is launched on course for a binary star system in the Alpha Persei star cluster. The system, known as TG-4787, is theorized to have at least 1 habitable world. The cluster as a whole may likely have dozens, however, rumors are that only a handful of other ARKs were launched towards the cluster.

What type of charter does your colony have?

1 - REFUGEE
> Made up of both refugees and ORION employees, large population to start but likely conflict.

2 - CORPORATE
> Made up of solely ORION employees. Keeping the peace will be easier, but the corporate bottom line will reign supreme.

3 - MUTINY
> An ORION ship taken over by ex-employees. All the benefits of the CORPORATE charter, but has no loyalty ties to other ORION charters, for better or worse.

Mutiny.

>3 - MUTINY
This isn't min-maxing right?

mutiny we gonna make a new corporate boys

Hard to minmax when you have descriptions instead of numbers.

We /freemarket/ now boiz, mutiny time

>Ah, the story starts to come together. Disgruntled employees of the ORION corporation (mostly miners and laborers, but some scientists and executives) have commandeered an ARK ship in near-Earth orbit. Christening the ship “Theseus,” a course is plotted far away from the long arm of the ORION corporation.

A few decisions must be made before the long, cold sleep can begin. First, lacking a leadership structure, members of the mutiny discuss how they should govern themselves once they reach their destination.

1 - CORPORATE

> It worked for ORION, why won’t it work for us. The heads of the mutiny will become the new heads of the Theseus Corporation.

2 - DEMOCRACY

> Let the people govern themselves and elect a Colonial Assembly to vote on important decisions and keep the peace.

3 - GOVERNORSHIP
> The highest ranking mutineer should become the Governor of the new colony, wielding executive authority until a better system can be devised.

>3 - GOVERNORSHIP
muh benevolent dictatorship

All corporate all the way

>3 CORPORATE

Oligarchy FTW

>Governship.

If I wanted to be in a corp I wouldn't start a mutiny. Democracy generally doesn't work. I'd vote for anarchy but I know it won't pass. So, Governship.

corporate bby with no space >

>Gonna do a little compromise here.
>A new corporate board is formed under the leadership of the mutiny’s leader, who proclaims themselves Governor of whatever new colony is founded and that the Theseus Corporation is subject to their law. But who is the leader?

Who started the mutiny?

1 - Nathan Sheridan, Director of Callisto Mining Operations
> An American geologist and corporate executive who oversaw the mining operations required to build ORION’s ARKs. Despite his corporate background,Sheridan considers himself a champion of the common man, having much affinity for the grunts under his command. If Sheridan is picked, the colony will be of largely North and Central American extraction. Sheridan’s knowledge of mining and construction would be a great boon to the development of infrastructure.

2 - Charlotte Adachi, Department of Acquisitions
> The half-Japanese, half-British Adachi was the head of Acquisitions for ORION, managing mergers and takeovers. Adachi is a cunning and ruthless Administrator, with little regard for failure. If Charlotte is picked, the colony will be composed of a mix of Japanese, North American, British and Australian/New Zealander settlers. Charlotte’s administrative skills outstrip nearly anyone in ORION.

3 - Abeo St. John, Director of Agricultural Science
> A Nigerian Agricultural Scientist, Abeo rose through the ORION ranks when he pioneered systems for hydroponic orbital farming. Fed up with ORION’s cold attitude towards poorer refugees, St. John’s mutiny aimed to rescue the more unfortunate from Earth. If Abeo is picked, the colony will be extremely diverse, with representatives from every continent, and will be higher population as well.

Sheridan, because as everyone knows, space is full of rocks.

>1 - Nathan Sheridan, Director of Callisto Mining Operations
COMMENCE ROCKBREAKING

>Charlotte

Because being a leader is not about doing things on your own but pointing others in the right direction.

Nathan why even bother putting St.John down this is a North Korean anonymous erotic novel sharing website fuck that nigger launch him into the sun on our way out I say!

adachi, let's make some space fins

Adashi all the way!

>picking a woman
Why don't we just change her name to Angela Merkel and get cucked by space muslims

2: Charlotte Adachi

...

> The charismatic Nathan Sheridan will serve as Colonial Governor and CEO of the Theseus Corporation. A board of Directors will sit under him, making decisions for the colony.

Centuries of cold sleep later, the Theseus finds itself at a new home. The fate of Earth is unknown, and for all the colonists know, they could be the last remaining humans alive. The viewscreens light up, showing the image of a planet below.

1 - ARID WORLD
> Canyons and rivers crisscross the surface of this beautiful but harsh Eden. The biosphere is limited, with plants and small reptile-analogues dominating the ecology. The world is mineral rich as well, but water may be somewhat difficult to come by, especially near the equator.

2 - OCEAN WORLD
> A marble of almost entirely pure blue ocean, there are a number of archipelagos dotting the surface of this deluged world. Storms and tides are intense, but there is a bounty of life beneath the waves. A lack of dry land for expansion might be a problem though…

3 - PROTO-EARTH
> The world is nearly identical to Earth… 1 billion years ago. The air is un-breathable and the landscape is dotted with massive volcanoes. However, with a small amount of terraforming, in a matter of decades this world could end up being a Paradise.

>Arid

Arid
Proto-earth is too black for me

>1 - ARID WORLD
We could start near the polar regions.

Ocean world, underwater cities FTW

Proto-Earth sounds fun, but we have a guy whose whole thing is rocks and rock accessories, so it's gotta be Arid.

arid

Arid!
Let's make out very own corporate forge world!

> Hospitable, yet Harsh Arid Planet it is.

Planetfall goes smoothly, and the ARK Ship is quickly cannibalized to build initial colonial infrastructure. All that’s left, before the real work starts, is choosing a name.

Any suggestions?

Kharak desu.

4 for Adashi, 3 for Sheridan. Man gets picked anyhow. Neat.

I second Kharak Desu

Saaraak Prime

Something sandy but nice. Petra, maybe.

No niggerland or if thats not aloud I second

God damn it. If you insist on posting Quests here instead of the Quest board at least put quest in the title so people can filter it out.

It's always Kharak.

Do you happen to be from Lancre?

I wrote the description when Sheridan was in the lead, and I didn't want to re-write it so...

Since this is a meritocracy, just like the new colony, I think Petra wins unless someone comes up with something even better.

so No-Niggerland is out then?

... I totally did not read that sticky.

I have to go to work, but next time we start up this will be on the new Quest board.

No clue what that is, so... Maybe?

Nova Petra, since there's already an old Petra maybe?

Bybe Bye op would you mind maybe putting a link to the new thread once you've made it in this thread

>Nova Petra
I can live with that

I'm for any variation of Petra, though Neo or Nova would work best. And please OP, link the new thread in this one if at all possible.

Gonna jump on the "we want a link" bandwagon, if ya don't mind OP.

Of course! I'll link to the new thread from here once I start it up.

I just got a look at the quest board, fuck everything about that, stay here for as long as the jannies tolerate it. That place is pure autism, and not the fun kind.

Thanks man
