Fate/Stay Night Quest [Part 4]

Last time, you walked inside the Matou house, met with the overseer, talked with Xuan again, and checked out the forest. Let's get the ball rolling.

You return to the Tohsaka house just as the sun vanished below the horizon, night falling over the city of Fuyuki on this second day of the war. You've seated yourself in the living room, with your employer Tokiomi, and your Servant Kiyohime both present. All things considered, you weren't able to gather much in the way of information today, but that's to be expected during the daytime. Now that night has fallen, though, the other Masters and Servants could very well be active.

So then, what will you do?

Head to Shinto, and send a familiar to Matou.

You ask Tokiomi to send a familiar to the Matou household; after all, just because the earlier venture there came up empty doesn't mean it isn't worth looking at, and you're hardly going back there yourself. While he does that, you decide to go to Shinto, taking Kiyohime with you of course. You'll need to be careful, and you won't know about what Tokiomi's familiar finds until you're able to talk with him again, so you can't take any undue risks. With that, you head off.

You reach the Shinto district of the city after a quick trek across the bridge over the Mion River, glancing around as you arrive at the more "modern" half. You actually haven't gotten to look around the area much since you got here, since most of your time has been spent looking at specific buildings and areas, while Shinto itself is far broader a zone. Well, no matter. You might as well take a look around.

...it takes ten minutes. About ten minutes of walking, before you realize that something is wrong.

Your Command Seals are burning, you sense a magus's presence, and...

"Anchin-sama, that's..."

"...yes, yes it is."

A rather large house in the Shinto district is layered in tens of different Bounded Fields. It goes without saying that both the magus you sense and the Servant Kiyohime senses are inside of that very house.

...well then.

It is, though it looks like today's not a good day for the participants. Depending on how it goes, I might do a later-day resume like we did yesterday, if I'm able to find the time.

You edge towards the house, trying to see if anything's visible inside while avoiding the numerous Bounded Fields.

...nothing. Blinds on the windows are closed, there are no direct openings, and you have no doubt that even with a basic spell for "X-Ray vision", the Bounded Fields would serve as a barrier to muddle your view. It looks like if you want to figure out what's going on in there, you need to go in.

You decide to approach the house, knocking on the door in the hopes of getting the attention of the magus inside. The moment you enter the Bounded Fields, though, you feel a sense of pressure bearing down on you. As with the Matou household, you don't have access to mana, and there are no doubt myriad other effects here, so you can't be careless.

After a handful of seconds, the door opens, but you are not happily greeted by the magus who lives in the house. Rather, something you recognize as a puppet, a familiar that looks similar to some sort of strange moving mannequin, answers the door. From it, a voice emits itself, though you don't see any speakers.

"Identify yourself."

Well, it's understandable that the magus wouldn't answer the door himself, lest he risk getting his head smashed in by an enemy Servant an instant later. You introduce yourself, leaving out your affiliation to the Tohsaka, and state that you're looking to form an alliance with the master of the house.

In response, the puppet goes quiet for several seconds before giving its response. "Please transfer one Command Seal to the Magic Circuits installed into this familiar as a down payment. Following this, your application will be considered." It says, extending an arm out towards you.

You blink, looking at the puppet as if waiting for a punchline, but there doesn't seem to be one. It might actually be serious.

[] "Uh...no. I'm not doing that."

Well shit, I was hoping to not have to deal with an army eventually, but this guy or smug loli bitch could be helpful.

Several seconds of silence pass before you manage to recover from the mental blow you've just been dealt. "Uh...no." You say, blankly looking at the puppet. "I'm not doing that. Good day."

As you turn yourself around to leave, though, a voice erupts from deeper within the house. "Are you truly going to back down so easily?"

You barely even register it as you turn your body around, anger and indignation suddenly filling your mind. The words strike at you like a poison, and even though you recognize that you rationally shouldn't be so enraged, that it doesn't make sense to be incited to such a degree by such a simple comment, the anger fuels your movement. By the time your mind turns back to lucidity, you notice that you're facing the puppet again, it has a small dent on its chest, and your hand hurts quite a lot.

What...the hell was that?

A Bounded Field is just "draw a circle, make a spell based on the boundaries of the circle, cool you have a Bounded Field". They can do any number of things, from alarm systems to controlling mana in the area, to Bloodfort stuff like life-drain.

In the words of Rin, "Infinite different effects are possible within a boundary field. There are all sorts of boundary field, from ones that conceal the area from people's eyes, to ones that limit the use of magic within them. The most aggressive of all are those that oppress life forms within them."

You need to go, now. Whatever that was, you can't allow it to happen again, Kiyohime might be resistant to mental interference thanks to already being insane, but that's a big "maybe" and you don't have that sort of protection. You bolt out, not stopping until you're far away from the premises of that house, and take a minute to catch your breath, a worried Kiyohime watching you.

Ah I see, thanks for that. Most of my knowledge on the world is on the Grail War, it's history, and the stories and abilities of a shit ton of Servants.

You turn to Kiyohime, noting the concern in her eyes, and ask her about what had just happened, if she felt anything strange from that second voice.

Confusion flits across the Berserker's face before she shakes her head a bit. "...no, Anchin-sama, I didn't feel anything like that. It just sounded like normal words to me." She replies, tightening her grip on your hand as she leans in towards you. "Do you need to lie down for a bit, Anchin-sama? If you're jarred from that, we can go home and I can make you something to eat."

The lack of people at the start probably wasn't helped by the fact that you posted just as the new DLC for XCOM 2 dropped.

You're still a bit concerned by what happened, not exactly feeling up for continuing to search the city after...whatever that was. "Yes, that sounds wonderful." You reply, giving Kiyohime a warm smile. In reply, an airy giggle leaves the Berserker as she leans up to briefly press her lips to yours, pulling back a moment later and starting back off to the Tohsaka house with you in tow.

You return to the house after a bit, taking a seat in the living room once more. Kiyohime gives you a brief hug before dashing off to the kitchen, presumably to start cooking as she said she would, while you talk to Tokiomi. Apparently, his familiar at the Matou house found nothing, not even a trace of magecraft or anything strange there save for the ones that were there ahead of time like Bounded Fields. The only thing of note is that there was a light on and a window open, through which the familiar saw a seaweed-haired boy laughing at the computer. Tokiomi told you that his name was Shinji.

You report what happened to Tokiomi in turn, the man's eyebrows furrowing at your explanation. "That...doesn't sound like magecraft." He says, visibly troubled. "You say that your Magic Circuits were open, so the resistance effect should have stopped any mental interference spells. Even if we say that it may have been a Caster who can override that somehow, you didn't sense any magecraft being used, so it has to be something else." He murmurs. "I'll try and see if I can find anything on such a phenomenon, but it's more likely that you were the victim of a Servant's ability, if Berserker is right and a Servant was there."

Let's work on the enemy we know the least about, the rest are either neutral or seem content where they are, for now.

You continue discussing the matter of the Master and Servant in that house, describing the puppet's appearance and the layered Bounded Fields, and asking if Tokiomi has any ideas of who they are.

At your description of the puppet, though, Tokiomi's eyes narrow. "A human-shaped puppet, and one that was able to easily take a blow from you?" He confirms, nodding slightly. "I see. Now, you may not know this fully, but when the human anatomical chart became well-publicized, the mystery of the human body died out, which crippled puppet-users. Creating combat-capable puppets is infeasible in the modern day, with only one or two people still being capable of making high-quality ones in spite of that decline of mystery." He explains. You nod, you've heard of a certain magus by the name of Touko Aozaki who's managed to avoid the decline of mystery and become a world-surpassing expert in the art of puppet creation; she's probably the only one who can do something like that reliably.

"So, that means that you're either dealing with someone like Aozaki herself, or that you're simply dealing with someone who purchased puppets from her. Given her abilities, her puppets are quite expensive, so I'd assume that, between the immense layers of Bounded Fields and the capital needed to buy a puppet like that, that you're dealing with a conventional magus with high wealth. In other words, Feend vor Sembren."

Well, it's hardly conclusive evidence, but Tokiomi's reasoning seems solid enough. The arrogance to ask for one of your Command Seals just to ally fits the profile of those Clock Tower elitist types anyway. You bring up the subject of Xuan and Elena, mainly the former, asking if Tokiomi's managed to get any information on them.

"Hm...the woman you call Xuan is still a mystery to me. You said she claims to be over three hundred and yet not know magecraft; if we assume she's being truthful, then I'm not sure just what she is. Maybe a Dead Apostle, but most of them at that age are incredible experts in magecraft. Maybe something inhuman, but how would she have been chosen by the Holy Grail? Then again, she could just be lying. I'm honestly at a loss with her, so all I'll say is to be careful. I'm using what connections I have to try and find out more about her."

"As for that overseer, I'd like it if she'd reimburse me for that familiar." He remarks, chuckling a bit at his own not-really-a-joke. "But finding information about her will be hard, given that I hardly have relations with the Church. I had amicable relations with a priest who used to be here, but with him gone so are my connections. As a Knight-Captain, though, she's someone better left to Berserker to fight than to you; you'd probably only be able to keep up with her in a fight if you used two or three Command Seals to reinforce yourself, and that's just to match her raw physical ability, not even counting skill."

"That item she had with her last night though, what looked like a shield. In the most dangerous case, she's been entrusted with a Holy Scripture. In that case, regardless of what you decide to do, I advise not taking any actions against her until you learn what its function is. There are some Scriptures of the Church that could even make her capable of defeating a Servant, if you're not careful."

Well, it's not exactly ideal, but at least you're better off than you were before. So in sum, Feend's Servant has some mental interference ability, Feend's base is in Shinto, the Matou house is quiet, Xuan's a mystery, and Elena's dangerous. Well, it's better than knowing nothing, at least.

Just as you finish talking to Tokiomi, Kiyohime comes rushing over with a small plate that looks like it was poured out of a bento box in a slice-of-life anime. Sitting on your lap happily, she reaches over with a pair of chopsticks, picks up a piece of shrimp, and moves it to your mouth. "Anchin-sama, say 'aah'!"

You've done enough work regarding the other Master and Servant pairs, you can spend a night working on your own. After giving Tokiomi a nod and a look that requests he leave you alone for a bit, you open your mouth with a soft "aah", leaving a humming Kiyohime to feed you.

With that said, you're still a little bit surprised that, as Tokiomi is exiting the living room, you watch as Kiyohime puts another piece of shrimp in her mouth, then abruptly shifts over to mash her lips against yours and let it shift into your mouth, a thin trail of saliva connecting the two of you as she breaks away. This continues for about half an hour before Kiyohime sets the plate down and slumps back against you, nuzzling against your chest with a contented sigh as the warmth of her body spreads to you. "Ah, Anchin-sama, thank you for reuniting with me." She exhales, eyes glimmering as they meet yours. "Just being like this, with you, I'm the happiest I've ever been. Can we...stay like this for a while, please?"

Putting your arms around her, you lean down to kiss her in response.

You wake up the next morning, in the guest bedroom of the Tohsaka house with a familiar spiritual entity pressed tightly against you. Her eyes crack open as you start to move, the trace of a smile playing along her lips as she leans over, briefly kissing you with a playful glint in her golden eyes. "Mm...good morning, Anchin-sama."

After a quick shower and rather hastily-eaten breakfast, you're left to mull over your plan for the day. The Einzbern Castle is likely to be the site of a Master, but is heavily protected. The same holds for the Matou household, except that it's been strangely quiet, especially during last night. Meanwhile, you've found what's likely Feend vor Sembren's base in Shinto, the overseer in the Church, and the mysterious Xuan who's likely in the park. You've yet to find the seventh Master, or Adnan's base of operations, nor have you found anyone working in the forest or at the Ryuudou Temple as of yet.

Well, you certainly aren't starved for options. What will your first stop of the day be?

You realize that you still haven't gotten around to checking the trap you placed on that magic circle you found at the Ryuudou Temple, and with that in mind set off for the temple. Naturally, you bring your loving wife-partner with you.

The walk there isn't particularly long, not compared to the trek you'd have to make in getting to the Church at least. You head up the steps to the temple, making sure that Kiyohime's feeling alright given the barrier that's around the temple, with its opening at the gate.

You head off to where you found the magic circle, looking to see if the spell you had cast there is still active.

...nothing. It looks like either the spell activated and hit some poor fool, or that someone had managed to disassemble it. You can't be sure.

You decide to keep searching the temple, in the hopes that there will be something there to make the trip worthwhile. You spend about a half hour scouring the temple, looking for any traces of magecraft or other Masters, but seem to come up blank. There's a nagging feeling in the back of your mind, something that appeals to the soul more than worlds, but you can't place it.

Well, there's always the mundane thing and tapping the walls and floors to see if there's any secret rooms or stairways, but that would take some time.

You continue your search of the temple for another half hour, trying to find any physical features that could indicate something hidden. In the end though, you're not altogether surprised when your search turns up no results; it's hardly like the odds of the Buddhist temple just being a conspiracy or something of that nature was very high at all. Still, you've more or less confirmed that, save for the temple's status as spiritual land and the Bounded Field around it, there's nothing worth noting.

As that's the case, the question then becomes where to head to next.

Since it's one of the main portions of the city that you've still yet to arrive at, you decide to head to Miyama. The walk there is a short one, given that the temple is on the western side of town, so it's still the morning by the time you arrive.

Unlike the ridiculous house from last night, there don't seem to be any particular areas that catch the eye magically when you arrive, and Miyama's size means that covering the whole place will be a bit troublesome, so it's for the best that you decide on a way of looking around. It's in broad daylight so you don't need to be too worried about combat happening, but you're still a bit apprehensive about your options.

You've wasted enough time today at the temple,, it's for the best that you be as efficient as possible from hereon out. You tell Kiyohime to head around Miyama and look for anything abnormal, while you yourself will try and investigate as subtly as possible. That way, you should have the area covered in just a few minutes.

Kiyohime seems a bit sad at having to leave you, but nods understandingly. "I'll be right back, Anchin-sama." She says, briefly wrapping her arms around you before entering spiritual form and presumably running off. Makes sense, you don't want the public to see a girl running around at mach three or something.

You start your walk around Miyama in turn, glancing around and trying to keep an eye out for anything unusual. It's been about a minute since you sent Kiyohime when you feel "something". Your eyes widen, a chill running down your back as your instincts scream at you that something's about to happen. Acting solely off of impulse, you move to duck down, trying to avoid that "something"...!

...

You fail.

After all, this is the natural result. A human could not have evaded what just struck you, such a thing had already surpassed the limits of human flesh.

Severed from your body, your head falls to the floor, eyes wide in a lifeless panic. Screams fill the district as people see the corpse that had been decapitated in broad daylight, without a sound, by nothing at all.

It's best to stay as subtle as possible; revealing yourself to whoever could be watching is dangerous, even if you can't sense a Master or a Servant here at the current time.

To that end, you start walking around Miyama, Kiyohime at your side, while trying to survey the area as best you can while reliant on your physical senses. Kiyohime does the same, though she has the distinct advantage of a Servant's abilities, and being able to sense a Servant should one approach you.

After scouring Miyama, you don't actually turn up with any results, surprising given that it's essentially an entire half of the city. Or at least, that was how it was up until the very end of your search. Without warning, Kiyohime's body snapped straight, her head turning skyward. "...Anchin-sama, I can feel a Servant up there."

You blink, coming to a stop and looking up as well. You can't see anything amidst the clouds, neither can Kiyohime, but she seems certain that there's a Servant up there, and it must be outputting a fair amount of magical energy for it to be noticed through her perception but be far away enough to not be visible. It's either a Rider, or a Servant that has the ability to fly, then.

I'm not entirely certain Nasu isn't capable of actually doing better then he does. It's hard to tell if he actively and deliberately does the things that clearly detract from his various franchise things or if he just does them because he knows they sell well or because he has employers that require him to do them.

I think maybe it's a bit of both, but who knows?
