>Orks are a melee race!
>I2

So lads I want to know if it's worth getting back into 40k or GW games generally.
I stopped collecting and painting around 10 years ago and haven't followed the releases much since, so is it worth it to get back in?
Am I going to be wasting my money on a dying game? I don't want to drop 500 pounds on the game and then have it die in 5 years or so.
If I do get back into this then what's a good starter set to get? I'm most interested in 40k but fantasy is also an option.
Thanks.

What is the best this guys have right now?

If you think a game that has models older then you still selling is going to die anytime soon then you should re-evaluate your life. Also, start-collecting is a great intro into the hobby.

Aircraft/drop troops or Armoured company. Those are the most competitive options. Kriegers and standard codex is mid line.

Well right now IS a pretty good time to start collecting, since there is a line of Star Collecting! packages, offering very reasonable saving on models and even a play as is formation.

The game itself is... well quite divided, balance between high and low tier armeis is a low, but on the other hand if you find a cool playgroup there's loads of cool if not powerful options to play with.

Every new GW release for July is AoS.

This now, what, the 9th month in a row since the last codex?

>using gw ork codex

>Raptor Odin posting

>CSM getting shafted this hard
I quit 40k years ago, it's nice to see nothing has changed since.

>implying
Neither of those guys, sorry.

this reply wasn't to you originally, but I think it applies to your sentiment:
with the addition: if GW can't/won't/is too slow to fix very obviously broken things, why not do it as players? ITC and others were borne out of this same concept as a means of balancing things for tournament play, but the same idea is equally applied when making shit that currently isn't fun, actual fun again.

Psykana Division, Heavy Artillery Carriages, Vultures.

Thanks for the pointers, I will give it a try myself and post the results later. I've been meaning to do some /gd/ work and now I got the perfect chance.

emperor's wrath formation, and things that go into the emperor's wrath formation.

Vets are the good troop choice, and in chimera are okay for their points.
Their aircraft are good.

Hey could someone check this army list and tell me if I fucked up something essential from rule standpoint? I've just started playing with my friend and he lets me use his figurines if I make my own lists in Battlescribe.

Forgot the damn picture

Armoured company, this is forgeworld codex? which one?

Psykana Division? from the codex Cadia?

emperor's wrath formation is only for apocalypse if i'm correct? (3 basilisk?)

Can Scout Sergeants even take Sniper Rifles?

>emperor's wrath
the new formation, not the old one. Yes they have the same name.

It's 2 of Hydra/Basilisk/Wyvern squadrons
1 Manticore/Deathstrike
And a company command in a chimera.
The Company command can give the IC, pinning, and split fire orders to the artillery.
If you have two voxes within 18" of the target, they get twin linked.

Emperors Wrath got a Cadia makeover and is one of the few good formations from Cadia along with the Psykana, which in my opinion is even better than a Conclave

I think it's just one vox within 18" and LOS, you might be mixing it up with the Space Marine (Can't remember which snowflakes) one that helps with teleporting.

how strong is mono khorne daemons?

you are correct, so better than I thought.

Almost pure melee with no psychic support, no transports and no ability to assault out of deep-strike.

They are pretty good at killing non-specialist space-marines in melee IF they get there.. but that's about it.

as I posted previously the main missing bit is the backgrounds, my photoshop knowledge is sadly very limited and mostly just what I need for UX design at work, having the icons and points rings as individual pngs and a generic dataslate background would be pretty amazing, but I haven't been able to achieve either.

I'm starting Ultramarines (I don't get all the hate). Using the Gladius Strike Force, which is the best Auxiliary to a starting player so I can get the Codex Astares benefit?

which god do i include to make them better than? or do i play csm instead

new daemon formation lets them spam flesh hounds, which are very good.
And bloodthirsters, which are good.
Only mono-god with a good gun.

Still a very restricted list.

>better
>csm

>better than?
better than that***

the easiest to collect and most universally useful would be 10th company task force, which is just 3 units of scouts. current recommendation is one with cloaks and sniper rifles, and 2 units mounted in land speeder storms.

>Psykana Division? from the codex Cadia?
Yes. The formation might read that the comissars are optional but they are mandatory 1 per squad. Harnessin on 2+ is just retardly good.

Okay here comes the catch - Most spell-lores they can use are shitty. They cant access Telepathy and paying this much for rerolls on divination is just meh.

But Daemonology:Malefic... Theres the gem. WC3 powers? 4 dice and its almost guaranteed, you can even try them on with 3. Perils on all doubles? LIKE I CARE the commissar will just *BLAM* your dude before he can roll shit on the table and do something retarded. Oh daemons are CTA-allies? Pfffth just summons screamers and turbo-boost them the fuck off to harass your opponent. And swapping your 85pts squad for Lord of Chance is always extra lulzy.

>which god do i include to make them better than? or do i play csm instead

If you want to play pure Khorne good, the Khorne Deamonkin army works quiter well, it's go fast Khorne demons mixed with similar Khornate CSM.

hey man i don't know
i just wanna play the red guys. something lore appropriate

what about khorne/nurgle? mono nurgle? i'm a noob these are shots in the dark

are those better than csm?

> if it's worth getting back into 40k or GW games generally.
It is a game for 2 or more players. 90% of the game enjoyment depends on your opponent. Find a good group and be a good player. There are different gamers who have different ideas for what that constitutes so best you find some with similar looks you have.
GW is currently making a big FAQ update, which is as unbelievable now, as it was 10 years ago. It is really based on hobbyist feedback on their facebook page.
>Am I going to be wasting my money on a dying game?
People are saying GW is dying for the last two decades now. They went through ups and downs, but if you are afraid of the company dying, GW is probably the safer choice then many competitors.
>If I do get back into this then what's a good starter set to get?
Depends on the faction you want to start with.

> I'm most interested in 40k but fantasy is also an option.
fantasy.... is dead. Replaced with Age of Sigmar, which has mixed reviews. Many dislike it compared to fantasy, if you care for a stable system, 40k is probably better. But then, I don't care for fantasy/AoS, you might visit their general regarding info for that.

So my friend's doing up a Death Korps of Krieg Assault Brigade army. I know precious little about how any form of IG work so could you rate? He's going for a historically accurate WW2 german division, forgot which so rather keeps the units he's chosen. Just looking for rating and wargear advice please.

He has a Company Command squad with an artillerist, 2 Griffon mortars and a Hdra Flak Tank. then he has an Infantry platoon command squad and 4x10 infantry squads. 2x8 Grenadier squads in Storm Chimeras, a Hellhound, a heavy weapons platoon (2 with heavy bolters, 1 with lascannons), 2 Thunderer Siege tanks and an Avenger flyer.

It a combined army built around both demons and CSM type troops.

They are at least solid middle tier where as regular CSM fight for last place.

Most the lists I see bring something to deal with aircraft.

I use the AA formation because my reserve rolls suck but some like the storm wing.

>Triarch Stalker
>High tier

Yes a single gun walker with no CC AP and a support ability that causes it to be blown off the board by turn two is a excellent unit.

2/5 list. Steer clear of Hydras and thunderers even if they are cool since they are lack-luster ruleswise.

> Just started playing
> already shoe horning in apocalypse strategic assets and forge world into a 1000 point game
Son you are on a dark path.

It's got the option to build the robot spider-tank popemobile

/40k/ I have done it! I have created my first BUSTY heavy weapon team. So far its only one centaur, but I have placed orders with FLGS for more.

I'm also waiting on female heads from statuesque minis, to complete the models.

>space marine chest pieces
> No bust to see
Get the fuck out and stay out

Thinking about coming back to 40K, but I'd like to do something fun, like Grey Knights allied with Inquisition, a tribute to the old Daemonhunters codex. Lots of flavorful Inquisition acolytes and whatnot. Maybe an Assassin in there.

Is this viable at all or is it not even worth it with all the Tau/Eldar spam I'm hearing so much about? I haven't played since 5th.

>I also wish Tyranids weren't shoehorned into one mildy competitive build, as they were my first love.

it's all fun and games until someone actually does the meme

>until someone actually does the meme
it was done before and far better.

Depends on your local meta, INQ/Grey knights is decent.

it won't compete with top-tier armies played at full effectiveness, but it will do well to decent against most current 'normal' armies.

I play most of the imperial factions and inquisiton mixed with its various orders militant is still the most fun, and with 7th edition allies rules you can actually make it fit the fluff.

Not busty enough, raptors user.

Why not Red Hunters with Inquistion? Even fluffier.
I just want someone to love my forgotten chapter, as it's clear FW won't.

Yea, I know... I need better options for torso pieces to represent Power Armour. I'm not a fan of boob plate though, just not very realistic.

You literally could not have made me happier with this comment.

I thought about playing them, I ended up trying to paint them a green snowflake chapter so I can use mantis warriors tactics but everyone hated it because
>forge world
I think I should just strip them and go red hunters but I already equipped all my guys with melee weapons.

>doing BUSTY ABHUMAN ROUGH RIDERS
>doesn't like boobplate

classic raptorguy

Oh Raptors user! If you wanted to do busty, then you should've gone with either pure cheesecake or boobplate.

To be fair, I'm not going for BUSTY so much as "MONSTERGIRL REGIMENT in Power Armour". Next week its going to be Lamia recon squads

user there are quite a few things contradictory in that sentence and i fear the thread may roast you alive for that

Hi, returning player, just found this :

dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/687932.page

Is this a thing ?
Do I have to get the latest, heaviest, largest models to be capable, even in friendly tournaments ?

I play IG

RAPTORGUY PLS

at least get one set of wych torsos from ebay and make some. pls.

Wych torsos? Alright fine, I'll make some cheesecake Lamia snipers for you guys.

You know, if he fielded all of that fully painted, I wouldn't even be mad.

Unless you're going to play tournaments don't listen to all Veeky Forums's doom and gloom bullshit. You'll find plenty of casual people who play pretty much every army. as long as you're not the absolute bottom tier (orks, CSM, nids) you'll have fun.

If you're playing tournaments then you do what you have to to win.

>If you're playing tournaments then you
have already lost

Somebody has to win. Probably the person who took more bikes.

>No bust
>Awful proportions
>Using an immobile unit to represent mobile horse ladies

0/busty see me after class.

>Somebody has to win. Probably the person who took more bikes.
The guy who tailors the most to win loses the most.

>tournaments

If it's a tournament you're supposed to cheese it to win.

>IG
>Tournaments
Don't, user. Just don't. 40k is not a game that holds up to competitive play; that kind of game assumes the sides are balanced enough that skill and strategy make the game, and simply put, they're not. There are too many armies, too many rules, and too many poor developer decisions. You'll be fighting at a disadvantage to begin with, using a mid-tier army, and on top of that your opponents will, almost to a man, bring the best their army can possibly fit.

You will lose. Often and fast. That's not a prediction, that's not an assumption. It's a fact. I play Guard - I have only ever played Guard, I only ever will play Guard. It's my favorite army by far. And I will never play a tournament unless there is some serious revision of the game.

40k is not balanced. Don't walk into a game that assumes it is.

Im gonna balance orks the best way possible: by playing orks vs orks. Do any rules exist for a path to Glory style campaign using only orks? My ork buddy is gonna divide up his units for us to have a gud fite and I'm looking to get creative.

GorkaMorka?

I always find it fund to enter with a army noone expects, one that upsets whatever inbred meta people are used to, fun to see the top cheesers scratching their head as they face units they've never seen in their competitive leagues with rules they didn't know existed.

Ashkually, space wolves got an updated codex in February. Not much changed in it admittedly but hey, this is GW, that happens sometimes.

Units not seen are not seen for a reason - tau flyers, rough riders, land speeders and pyrovores are just shitty units.

Starting or coming back in 40k is great today, because of all those other vendors. Half of my 40k armies consits of models from raging heroes, wargame exclusive, kromlech and so on. With the new Darkness and Light kickstarter from raging heroes i will start my dark eldar army. And GW itself has a fuckton of cool releases like Skarbrand. You can get around the lack of character those days (in contrast to the 90s where it seems fewer developers packed more of their own in the game) with some greenstuff and time.

>Im gonna balance orks
>by playing the mirror

that makes 0 sense mate

>Do any rules exist for a path to Glory style campaign using only orks?

gorkamorka

I can't say I haven't always wanted to turn up at a tournament with a list of nothing but Ork Walkers.

I stomped a Podspamer list with a walker list.

Great fun, though I was quite lucky with my KFF bouncing off the first turn of melta shots before i tore them apart with Grotzookas and Klaws

Are War Walkers OP?

What about Swooping Hawks?

No and no.

Both units are very decent but noway "OP". They both have designated role and they perform that role very well.

Anybody holding out hope for GW using the new erratas as a quick patch for balance for Orks, CSM, and nids?

Me neither. :'(

there are 4 outright OP units in eldar,
another 4 very good ones that still have enough downside to not be broken,
and the rest go from pretty good to subpar.

You call that busty? Look at this wiki for a fan service-y vidya game/anime and repent. senrankagura.wikia.com/wiki/Kagurapedia

I don't expect it, but it would be nice. Just a few lines of "Forgefiends are now 140 points, Rubrics are 20 and Terminators are 22"

it's not an errata, it's an FAQ, there is a difference.

Nope

If anything theyll use them to make them worse

Such is the way

What are really subpar units Eldar have? Damn I would give my third testicle for Shining Spears in my IG-army.

"If your opponent agrees you can have your snowflake dreads have 4 attacks, SCRATCH THAT now it's an official rule"
They're clearly just making shit up as they go along

Unless you're space marines :^)

Storm Guardians. Maybe regular guardians too. Every other unit is at least average or above average.

Par for 40k or for Eldar?

>Murderfang now gets 9 attacks on the charge at I4 for only 35 points more than a 4 klaw deff dread
>which has to give up its weapons for 7 attacks at I2

WEW

LAD

I keep thinking I cant get any saltier, then I fucking do.

Are you salty a Special character is better than a generic model?

>play orkz
>lose melee against literally any given unit 9 times out of 10 with expensive units like mega nobz

new codex when

user, don't be salty. Look for a bright side.

>Special character is an elite slot
>Deff dread is in the insanely overcrowded HS slot

Shining Spears look an army with no mobile infantry (rough riders are beyond subpar), they are subpar for their role.

As said, storm guardians are the worst. Phoenix lords are all overpriced for what they do, with some also just not doing anything
Wraithblades are an extremely slow melee unit with no good way to speed them up.
Vypers are venoms with no inbuilt invun and no transport capacity.
And the wraithlord is a dreadnought with no special characters or options outside of forgeworld.

and the autarch is 70 pts to get a bonus to you reserve rolls.

Howling banshees aren't subpar for their role, but their role is killing sisters of battle and chaos space marines, and that does not come up that often. Though in ZM you add a useful disruption role that puts them up to useable.
