This was from TSR; multiclassing didn't work like that. You couldn't just take levels in whatever class you wanted; rules for specific dualclass pairs were laid out in the books just like with the single classes. Fighter-Thief was a class of its own, and was meant to be played very differently from both plain Fighter and plain Thief.
Furthermore, the Barbarian class didn't even exist yet.
