What's your opinion on sapient space ships? Either via A.I, consciousness uploading, or bioship.

...

Is this the space ship games thread?
Any game/suggestion if I'm not fond of X-wing/star wars in general? also there's games based on non-space ships/vessels?

I've always loved this little beast.

Checked, and I've never really liked the idea of the AI in a ship being "the ship". I prefer them being like a very powerful member of the crew.

I've never liked bioships, or biotechnology like that. It just rubs me the wrong way.

Anyone else feel that spaceship design has gone downhill in the last decade or so?

Fuck I love the Dramiel.

>still at least a week until dropfleet ships
FUGG

Full Thrust
Firestorm Armada
Battlefleet Gothic

I'm sure there are others(I know Battletech has rules for space comabt but sadly from what I gather they're fuckawful), but those are kinda the big three.

I have such a hardon for this guy's art.

SPAAAACEEEE

I like them, if they have some kind of personality.
I wouldn't say so, right now we are in a little space game renaisence with some cool ships. Firestorm or EVE for example.

SPAAAACEE

That's not a space ship.

All these ships are scientifically inaccurate and you should all kys *tips*

Where is this from?

Captain Harlock CG movie. Good.

SPAAAACE

I dont like bioships, they're usually space whales or giant space arthropods or giant asteroid-people.

The only good "bioship"(if we could call it that) was the black cloud, and even though is quite an original idea is not flawed

Biological systems are trully inefficient in space, they need constant nourishment so they would end up in hibernation, but hibernation still requires a lot of resources so it would be close to kryptobiosis, but then you can't really keep kryptobiosis for long in space; the cold temperatures would annihilate any kind of cell and the radiation would destroy any complex biochemical compound, that would never get repaired.

And then there is the fact that in space distances are huuuuge, and things require enormous times to be completed, a bioship couldn't work on that ammount of time without canibalizing itself.

And then, a complex biological system needs the entire periodic table on nutrients, asteroids run short on this, since they lack the quantities and the proportions needed, and planets are usually too violent for that(just look at Venus or Jupiter those conditions are much more common than Mars or the Earth).

And a biological system have problem managin energy at the quantities a ship needs, a fusion/fission/antimatter reactor would burn the bioship in seconds, gas is completly unefficient as most chemical reactions for this purpose, and solar flails put too much strain on the bioship cell structure, the ration energy investment for repairs/impulse before getting to nutrients would be completly negative.

Bioships are just cool, but sadly they can't really work.

Space.

Space?

Pic related is actually a ton of fun.

It is a true-to-the-tabletop port of BFG. I've been having a blast playing it.

>It is a true-to-the-tabletop port of BFG.
So the Orks fucking suck balls in it, and get effortlessly obliterated by Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Necrons?

I'll pass, then. Tabletop Gothic had no fucking balance.

SPACE!

No.

I actually really liked The Expanse's take on starships being huge gray skyscrapers, built with the "floors" toward the engines (due to microgravity caused by thrust). At one point one of the main characters even laments how the realitistic requriements of spaceships led to designs completely lacking in any external aesthetics.

>Expanse

I played Orks and always dominated my FLGS and friends.

Any good books with space combat as a theme? Like the Lost Fleet ones, they are pretty cool. Webber, I didn't like his style.

The newest Captain Harlock movie, should be on netflix

The game is Imperial Navy and Space Marines vs. Tyranids, and it's by a small company so I don't expect them to expand it all that much. I expect Chaos in the future but not much more. The UI's finicky but it's quite fun.

The tabletop game was more cinematic than balanced, that's true. Necrons were deliberately OP with victory point modifications to compensate - i.e. you were supposed to lose against them, but if you barely lost, it was basically a win. Eldar movement is a real problem. It's "balanced" in that their win/loss record isn't bad, but you can often tell who's going to win before the game starts based on how the terrain is set up and what the other fleet looks like. I'm a big fan of the fanmade ELdar MMS rules (move-move-shoot, as oppsed to move-shoot-move) - they make them act more normally.

Dark Eldar were fine, imo. Orks aren't bad either (except against Eldar) now that people have realized that hulks and brute ram ships are not actually the way to win. Its their 10hp cruisers, loads of attack craft, and torpedo escorts.

The Dragon Never Sleeps

Did someone say SPACESHIPS?

>now that people have realized that hulks and brute ram ships are not actually the way to win. Its their 10hp cruisers, loads of attack craft, and torpedo escorts.

I thought I was taking crazy pills for years because thats how I consistently won, but every article kept pushing ram ships

what about non-space games?

sorry for being late I didn't realize I got a response.

Love 'em. I wish I could have actually seen the space battles in Marathon instead of just reading about how Durandal kicked everyone's ass.

About to start a new SWN campaign tomorrow...pretty excited

Legend of Galactic Heroes is great, although I'd say only half of it is space combat, the other half being political discourse. The books are slowly being translated, but I think two are out so far.

I'd recommend the anime adaption as well, if you like that sort of thing. The entire series is on youtube.

FC CAN I BRING MY DRAKE?

How's the fleet meta these days? Didn't play in years.

>minmatar

not nearly enough rust

>insert usual rant about superiority of the Orion battleship design over all those space fantasy pieces of shit.

Nevermind the fact that I posted more than a few of them.

Currently the small fleet and small ship area in general is dominated by the Svipul, Confessor, Garmur, and Orthrus.

As you move larger in ship sizes, things get more balanced. You can actually base fleets around battlecruisers again. Battleships are also pretty good, but still suffer from being pretty fat and susceptible to bombs. HAC fleets and T3 fleets are probably the most common medium-sized fleets.

Caps also got changed a bunch. Carriers no longer do triage--there are now dedicated "Force Auxiliary" capital ships for that. And no one can do (effective) remote repairs outside of triage.

Dreadnoughts and Titans can now fit "High Angle Weapons" which have super good tracking but (relatively) poor DPS.

Titans also got a few new Doomsday abilities, although outside of a few gimmick scenarios I don't think they've been used that much.

And on the whole, things are getting bloodier. There's still some superdunks, of course, but most fights end up with both sides getting some bruises.

>things are getting bloodier
Well that the sort of thing that might make me give it a try again, now that my professional situation is much more stable than a couple years ago and I may be able to commit some regular time to nullsec activity. Thanks for the info, capsuleer.

>checking the sov map for old time sake
>wait... what happened to that big fat splash of yellow-piss in he upper left corner?
>Goonswarm Fed nowhere to be found on the map (or close)
>is this real life?

That's fucking it, resubing this week-end. What will happen next, SirMolle getting his mojo back?

Best ship coming through! Out of my way rustbuckets!

Yep, goons got anally blasted. The fabled "everyone in Eve teams up to fight them" happened, and somehow they got fucking tabled in a month and now, after three(?)-ish months of holding out in lowsec they're moving to Delve.

>tfw the orion battleship was never built
