When you read their goals you can see it's all very sensationalized. This seems like the kind of thing that shouts 'future applications', and it's true that you could backup your genome to the blockchain, but the answer I have failed to find is why anyone would want to. They seem to be going in the personal genome storage direction, but why would I need a decentralized backuo when I could just get it sequenced and store it locally? Why would I even want to do that? Who would possibly want to buy random snippets of other people's DNA to create value for the uploader? They even state it's too expensive and large to upload the whole thing, and mention you can only put in the areas that differentiate you from other people - that's 100% BS and pharma companies or scientists will not want to buy that Truncated data. In short, I think it sounds interesting to those who don't know much about genomics. I work at Synthetic Genomics and think it's total crap as a future idea, but who knows you may make money off it in the short term if Reddit tier science normies pile on.

Genome researchers can pay for data, but there's already a huge data sharing initiative going on. And you want verified sources - if you study a specific breast cancer mutation you want data from hospitals and biopsies where that's been verified, NOT some random snippets of eye color and racial makeup that average Joe uploaded himself and hopes to make a buck off.
