Well an example of some more modern "surprise attacks", both fictional and potentially real, are things like;

1) In the film war horse. The German's set camp in such a way as to draw the British cavalry into a charge before retreating into the forest, at the edge of which they had set machine guns, allowing them to cut them down to a man.

2) In theory if someone in Africa currently wanted to get an attack force or covert force into Europe. They could hire smugglers or pretend to be some to get to Europe as Syrians. This would then leave them stuck anywhere in Europe but it would certainly be a way of getting into Europe. Then they'd just have to meet up and begin operations.

3) If one wanted to deny a tactical location to the enemy, then one could fill the location with remotely detonated explosives before "retreating". Once the enemies forces have settled in to the vacated defences by blowing the explosives, you would deny the enemy the location whilst causing them casualties. If one then wished they could retake the location whilst the enemy recovered from the explosions.

Ironically all the mass shootings of late have been done by either white folks or people who's parents moved here before even 9/11 had happened.
