Yeah OP, rape isn't really just something you spontaneously bring up in RP. In my experience rape in RPing tends to happen when autists want to be edgy, or alternatively as an ERP element among super submissive/dominant people. I've NEVER seen it done well by the edgy crowd, even as a backstory element.

It's not forbidden in my games, but I've also never had someone bring it up in an uncontrolled fashion in the main party- sometimes my players ERP on the side, and at that point I don't give a shit what happens. The general rule for me is just keep it out of the "common area" of the game.

That kind of behavior is just non-conductive, in the same vein I'd bin somebody who gets really disgustingly descriptive about pulling out an enemy's intestines or something. At best all it does is slow down the story for an uncomfortable, retarded scene of the character being a psycho. At worst, they'll actively drive other players away because most folks don't want to indulge in Jeffrey Dahmer's Picnic at the table.

When you're playing something, you've got two ways about it, the clean and the dirty. If you're playing clean, you're not going to do the fucked up shit that role-playing has to offer. Maybe you'll get someone who collects mementos(Memen-toes, even) of fights, or describes really cutting something hard with a blade or crushing it with a blunt object, but all in all, it's generalized violent but standard stuff.

But when you get into really wild shit, a lot of people can get hung up thinking it's all still swords and sorcery and not using create water to drown an immobilized prisoner, or using a perfect opportunity to drench a foe in lantern oil before shoving them onto their fire in an ambush. It's the thorough decapitation of an entire tribe of goblins to serve as warnings, especially the smallest heads.

Both types of roleplaying are fine types of roleplaying, but you've got to make sure your players are all on the same page. If there's only one player who isn't on board for selling Minotaur meat as beef, or if there's only one player making delicious kobold jerky out of the tenderest nestlings, then everyone's going to be feeling disappointed to some degree.

Now if you'll excuse me, I just realized that Kobold jerky as a hot new trail ration sounds like an awesome quest hook either way.

You could do that veils/lines thing that seems to be popular among some groups.

You decide on basically a movie rating for the game, but then everyone also lists veils and lines.

A veil means "when this is to happen, we fade to black." Maybe torturing a prisoner. So you just roll and see if the prisoner talks and then move on.

A line means "nobody in our party will torture anyone or be tortured in this campaign, and if it happens among NPCs it will only be alluded to and not described."

Torture is just an example, but it allows you all to lay out on the table what you don't want to see in the RPG.

This is exactly why I specifically forbid 18+ content in all games I play with new/random people.

Not because I have an issue with mature situations, but because I have an issue with people specifically looking for those situations. If you can deal with some basical level intrigue/mystery/murderhoboing without sperging out or being a creeper, I'll quickly learn to trust you enough to let you deal with more mature themes. But there's no way in hell I'd ever play with a guy who comes to me specifically asking for 18+ content.

Despite all the stories around here, a lot of parties have decent intentions despite their methods. They are usually put up against forces that serve as genuine threats and pose some kind of challenge which results in ridiculous, morally questionable happenings as the players try to succeed or survive.
Rape pretty much always implies the victim is at the rapist's mercy. There is no threat, just abuse of power, which for most people just comes off as tasteless, even if they aren't on the receiving end of it.

With that said rape can be done well. It can be treated as a serious thing in a serious setting. It can also be treated as a silly thing in an explicitly silly setting. Ii can be done well in many different ways, each of which requires serious communication and understanding from the group.

But rape shouldn't be treated the same as hacking and slashing.
