>Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce RuneWars: The Miniatures Game, a new two-player miniatures game of epic, rank-and-file warfare set in the realm of Terrinoth! >two-player miniatures game of epic, rank-and-file warfare
So, apparently FFG has decided to make Warhammer Fantasy Battle now that GW decided they don't want to do it any more.
Since it is FFG we can be certain of tree things: -It is going to be mechanically well designed and easy to play, but will also feel very "gamey". -It will require a ton of special tools, dice and material, to force you to buy a core-set -they will most likely force you to buy everything from every faction to get the right cards if you want to be good at it.
I have no Idea how to feel about this.
Easton Collins
>I have no Idea how to feel about this.
Well, it's not like you have to buy it. At worst it's just another game out there and at best it's a new source of neat miniatures for proxies.

Mason Davis
That's exciting news because I too think that it will probably be a well designed game with all the usual wargame fat trimmed. But the quality of FFG miniatures up until now have not been up to hobby grade standard. Good point about fancy dice. Cards can be printed for a friendly test game but dice will be problematic
Joseph Anderson
Oh I could play my Bretonians! yay!
Carter Gonzalez
I'll stick with Kings of War.
Cooper King
Is it prepainted?
Cooper Smith
>Special Dice >Movement Template >Movement dial
So... D&D Attack Wing revamped?
See my greentext.
This isn't WHFB, it's X-Wing applied to fantasy ground combat.
Granted movement templates are better than WHFB's movement rules, but so are Kings of War's movement rules.
John Rogers
Nope, unpainted like Imperial Assault.
Colton Johnson
Very late to the party.
Why did KoW and 9th age gain so much success? Timing.
With the nerdrage over AoS, 2 viable rank-n-flank alternatives swooped in heroically to save many from burning their minis (most of them), and are now the 2 top competitors for people looking for an alternative to AoS
Now that the dust has settled and the fanbase has comfortably split between AoS, KoW, and 9th age, there are no more angry nerds to switch to yet another rank-n-flank fantasy game.
This game might have had a shot if it was announced summer last year, but it's a little too late to capitalize on angry neckbeards, they have found their places.
Dylan Gutierrez
Even Kings of War took advantage of the End Times rage one and a half years ago. Mantic even made sure to make lists for all WHFB factions and is currently making minis for armies that the GW model line no longer supports.
Christopher Morgan
Fucking Neato
The Rune series is actually a pretty cool setting, I love the Descent and Battle lore games
Joseph Russell
Oh shit, those maneuvering tools and the spinner
This game is fantasy Xwing, with a lot bigger units
Nathan Thomas
Fantasy Flight knows what they're doing. Plus they have the means to hold a struggling game on it's feet until it picks up
Isaiah Jackson
>snap together bases >movement tool >movement dial
Huh. I don't know how to feel about this
Hunter Murphy
Any more models pics? The worm thing looks cool
David Lopez
I'm gonna buy this for minis for Kings of War, then if it's good I have another game to play too. Can only be a good thing for more competition.
Jaxson Edwards
I'm curious about the minis materials. If it's just resin and not plastic sprues I'm gonna ignore it.
Logan Sullivan
Personally I love painting, but hate cutting sprues, assembling, trimming flash, mouldlines, all that bullshit. If they're one-piece that's even better in my books.
Kayden Russell
I love sprues with more options than I need. It's like building with legos or something.
Parker Gray
>So people really hate that new Age of Sigmar game, we have a chance to make something to appeal to Fantasy Fans >Shit, I wish we'd anticipated this >Start working on it tomorrow
Too much time later...
>Release the game! >All the ex-fantasy players have either found a different game or quit entirely by this point, boss. >D'oh!
Cameron Clark
Pretty much this. I'm an AoSfag, but I'm not afraid to recommend kow or 9a to someone if that's what they are looking for. This most likely won't be something I will talk about often. FFG is notorious for having dev ADD and don't garner any confidence in the type of support a tabletop minis wargame needs. xwing is an exception, not a rule. I am beginning to think xwing gave them way too much confidence, not realizing people are into xwing because star wars IP, and not because FFG is doing it.
Julian Stewart
To be fair, I would never have gone into X-wing if it wasn't fun as fuck to play, so they are doing something right other than having a good IP.
Owen Gray
My questions; Are the mini's good? Are they shitty soft plastic? How many factions? How expensive?
Liam Foster
Let's play a guessing game based on previous FFG products >Are the mini's good? They will be just like most of the FFG minis for example; Imperial Assault, Descent etc. >Are they shitty soft plastic? See above >How many factions? Two, and maybe, just maybe the third one in a year or two >How expensive? Like Armada
Ryder Bailey
Of course it is. It's fun, but not for me because it's not a hobby game.
But what I'm saying is FFG likely has it in their head that this game is so popular solely because they designed a good game. So they decided to push this product, which may have a game, but no IP (or a very obscure one at least).
Isaac Sullivan
Maybe they're hoping to carry over some of the playerbase from X-wing?
Christian Rodriguez
I think that's absolutely the case. The 'warhammer is neat, but GW are shady and it's way too expensive' crowd and the X-wing crowd probably have pretty significant overlap, too.
Hunter Watson
>runewars >hobby miniatures game So FFG had decided to take two things they are terrible at spring and combine them .
And on top of that they're charging inflated armada prices for a game with no licensing fee.
Chase Foster
>And on top of that they're charging inflated armada prices for a game with no licensing fee.
Fantasy Flight What did you expect
Before GW is finally finished for good, FF will take up their throne
Elijah Hill
>Before GW is finally finished for good, hehe
hehehe
Ahahaha
AHAHA
HAHAHAHAHA
AHAHAHAahahahaAHAHAHAhahahAHAHaa
Oh wait, you're serious.
Adrian Martinez
They'll fully transition into videogames and make more money than ever, I know.
But they'll continue to pull investment from the tabletop market until they really are "just a model company".
At which point GW is basically "finished" in the manner that Theseus's ship got rebuilt into a car or a house or something.
Bentley Wilson
Wow, you really are out of touch, aren't you? Oh well. I will let it come as surprise to you.
Camden Johnson
Uhh... some of the worst aspects of FFG's design (more counters than grains of sand on a beach and special dice) put into a wargame?
No thanks.
Jason Russell
>It's not a hobby game. What. It is bro, in what sense it isn't?
Colton Howard
Some of the minis look cool enough for my KoW.
Sebastian Morgan
The worm rider is pretty cool, and the infantry seems better than the basileans men at arms. Depending of the price it can be a good option.
Jaxson Allen
>basileans men at arms Don't people just buy historical romans for them anyway ?
Brayden Baker
R.I.P. Mantic (and most probably AoS)
Austin Parker
Not really. They have a dice app with all their specialist dice on it. It's cheap, but I'm sure you could also just pirate the apk
Tyler Ramirez
>movement templaces >tons of counters >special dice Meh. I hope the minis will be good enough for KoW.
Kevin Edwards
Unpainted minis are the biggest thing from keeping me entering those games. Painting fifty dudes was fine when I was 15 and didn't have anything else to do, not so great in your late-twenties with a full-time job and other responsibilities.
I live in hope that a major company will make a decent pre-painted wargame.
Jayden Morales
I'm definitely in the center of that Venn diagram.
Anthony Nguyen
Oh God, models looks really ugly, looks like cheap AoS-clone but with Undead instead of Khorne.
Lucas Walker
While I dislikes all speculation about GW "death", but current situation is pretty dangerous for them.
Cooper Howard
W-well the rules are so easy even a NORMIE can understand them and and the minis come pre-painted and without fifty options per model so you don't have to spent four hours assembling and painting each one which means it is for NORMIES who have lives and I just dont like that!
Or some variation of the above. I guarantee it.
Adrian Roberts
The counters are a pain in the ass, but the special dice never bothered me much. And with any luck we might avoid the bucket of dice thing. Throwing 40 dice gets old fast.
Juan Wright
And what's wrong with this?
Justin Sanders
I know a nontrivial part of why I goot into X-wing was that Warhammer was expensive as fuck and I was annoyed to have to keep playing with proxies. Eighty bucks in X-wing got me a good enough ship base for like half a dozen entirely different play lists, eighty bucks in Warhammer in my country got me maybe two units of skinks if I found them a little discounted.
Aiden Allen
>Throwing 40 dice gets old fast >only 40 dice >not 90
Joseph Scott
I'd hope we get a close up of the infantry models. I'm in the market for fantasy human soldiers.
Well, I personally like my fantasy soldiers to look a bit more..fantasy-ish.
Also to have to shoes and pants.
As long as GW still sells space marines, they will never got out of business.
Brandon Young
With hating on a game because it comes with a low time investment, simple rules and almost no customisation? It's unnecessarily alienating and asinine. Yeah, you might like assembling and painting those minis, but they're only core elements of the game, and only as necessary to the hobby, as the company makes them.
Kayden Adams
>As long as GW still sells space marines, they will never got out of business. And here is the problem for GW, now 40k in trouble, FFG stealing from them casual market (most important for GW) from one side, from other GW totally lost the battle for "best models" title.
Parker Torres
>With hating on a game because it comes with a low time investment, simple rules and almost no customisation? Sorry, but I dodn't see hate here, only personal tastes and opinions about "gamename".
Dylan Johnson
Then I question either your ability to read subtext, or the honesty of your context.
Anthony Turner
I don't even know what's going on anymore.
Ethan Garcia
So..now you are a growup with responsabilities and a full time job you don't want an hobby but just want to play with toy soldiers? Neat.
Austin Turner
Rockface McFourarms looks Warcraft as hell, but also pretty cool.
Jeremiah Wood
This will probably be a deciding factor - FFG is one of the few that will actually be able to life-support it long enough to get traction, and the spillover from X-Wing guarantees a small but stable community right off the bat. Potential. Even if I think the game itself looks a bit wank.
>There are people that don't prefer multi-pose. Sickening.
If they're resin one-piece, there will still be production line bullshit that needs cleaning, but they'll be less customisable, generally take paint a little less well (small factor) and are likely to necessarily be less 3D.
Justin Wilson
>people shitting on sigmarines, but literally okay with stone marine kek also, skelets totally stolen from HoMM5
Jace Cook
Depending on price I might pick it up to paint for fun and play sometimes as a self-contained thing. Might be useful to persuade my boardgamer friends to give wargames a shot.
I don't see myself long-term collecting it though.
Jaxson Campbell
I don't think this will kill off Mantic much faster than was already inevitable.
>Special dice Such an annoying thing to do. So much why. I get the argument for, but I guess I'm just grognardy about it, because I've never enjoyed a system like that. [soiler]Except Heroquest.[/spoiler]
>Painting fifty dudes was fine when I was 15 and didn't have anything else to do, not so great in your late-twenties with a full-time job and other responsibilities. I agree, but I've worked it into my chill-out time. Try it. Get zen on it and shit, it's better than Netflix. Even better than that is painting with Netflix, since it's not like you were doing naything with your hands then anyway.
Also, pre-painted is almost exclusively trash or overpriced or overpriced trash.
Levi Reed
Generic fantasy gonna generic.
I think the notStormwhatever look better than the AoS faction, and I like the slightly cartoonier Undead. But at the end of the day, it would be effectively impossible not to turn out something clone-looking just because we're drowning in WHFB-capitalisation games at the moment.
Joshua Lee
More like
>So people really hate that new Age of Sigmar game,
Too much time later...
>Release the game! >Uh, people have really warmed up to AOS
Bentley Jenkins
Going to get two core sets day 1. Can't stand Mantic's piss poor quality.
Jacob Kelly
>Can't stand Mantic's piss poor quality. Well, FFG models are shit too.
Xavier Moore
Nothing compared to mantics flash covered metal or broken plastic. Worst I've had after over a dozen FFG games is one of the legs broken ona prove droid, which they replaced.
Asher Mitchell
>over a dozen FFG games is one of the legs broken ona prove droid Well I mean FFG models are ugly looking too.
Brayden Edwards
Those designs look like absolute shit.
Like, early Warmahordes without the flavour shit. The boys in blue faction looks like some Warcraft tier garbage.
I'm all for people trying to kill AoS, but this ain't the way.
Xavier Carter
>runewars Literally what?
Robert White
I can't see a reason to go for this over 9th Age or Kings of War, but I suppose that it can be a source of minis. The circular base movement trays look nice.
Juan Long
But that is only for their old models. Mantic used made in England hard plastic for all of their more recent rank and file. Not as customizable as GW, but certainly better than PVC and resin models.
Logan Lewis
>9th Age Official support, popularity. >Kings of War Game design, popularity
Ethan Rodriguez
Game design is easily KoW's strong point, though. The rules are the best of any fantasy miniatures game I've ever played. Unless you mean aesthetically or thematically, in which case you're probably right.
Lucas Barnes
>Game design is easily KoW's strong point, though. And so as FFG
Levi Adams
I'm a 31 year old adult with a full time job, house car, family the whole shebang and I can easily do a ten man squad a week.
Aiden Lewis
I think the whole esthetic is warcraft as hell. It's the thing now, though at least those guys in front of rock guy look a bit more warcraft 2 than 3.
Cameron Thompson
>house car Cool man.
But srsly, this user is right. If you can't turn out half a dozen tabletop miniatures in a week, then you're lying because you can, it only takes an hour or two.
Anthony Anderson
>But srsly, this user is right. And any reasons to play tabletop games instead of vidoe games?
Adam Hall
>popularity
But that's wrong.
Popularity will be this game's biggest hurdle. Wargamers suffer from the sunk cost fallacy on a mass scale, and people tend to only play what's locally popular and nothing else. This game'll have a hard time trying to get off the ground because FFG simply doesn't have the captive fanbase GW can force to play their games, and most WHFB refugees have already picked their replacement game be it KoW, 9th Age, or AoS
Asher Martinez
Kind of a retarded thing to argue about. If you like to do something you spent your time on it.
If painting minis in not as important as playing video games, eating cookies or fucking your wife to you, then you'll probably spent your time doing that. Then you can't complain that you don't get any minis finished though.
Gabriel Ross
What point are you trying to make?
Camden Moore
>This game'll have a hard time trying to get off the ground Much easier than KoW or 9th Age, but yeah harder than AoS. >FFG One of the largest developers in industry, yeah they aren't GW (I mean GW stores network), ut still. >and most WHFB refugees have already picked their replacement game be it KoW, 9th Age, or AoS Literally who cares? FFG audience is players, not hobbists.
Jaxon Ramirez
>Kind of a retarded thing to argue about. It's not becasue without hobby-aspect tabletop games are just video games, but without graphic and turn-based only.
Eli Price
Should it be a Warcraft clone: I want purple elves.
Leo Diaz
okay, I had to read that post multiple times to make any sense of it. Are you really saying tabletop games and video games are interchangeable?
If so that doesn't make any sense whatsoever for multiple reason. First and foremost being that tabletop games require you to have another person in the room to interact with.
Anyway, it's an inane argument. And I'm not interested in arguing at all at the moment so do whatever you want, idgaf.
Jack Roberts
>that tabletop games require you to have another person in the room to interact with That's not completely true though.
Ryan Rivera
People usually play FFG games because they're "Good", all that other shit doesn't matter.
Also there's a lot of people who don't like painting and gluing and just like pushing models around on a table. This appeals to those people.
I think the models also look fine, they're pretty average. The skeletons are generic but simple enough to look good, and the humans look relatively decent as well. I think the unit blocks clipping together is a great idea too.
It's not KoW or Warhams, but it's not trying to be. Also, since it will probably be around $100~ it'll probably be a fairly decent deal if you just want some generic decent looking minis that don't need much time investment.
