>roll a mage >1d4 hit die roll = 2 HP to boot >can't wear armor since lol encumbrance to spellcasting >party runs into a small band of thieves >I waste my one and only spell use for the day on a Magic Missile spell, which doesn't inflict enough damage to kill even one enemy >one of the thieves fires a sling at my mage >1d4 damage roll = 3 damage >mage dies on the spot >healer fees are outrageous, so the party forgoes resurrection >I'm out of the game
Either your DM is a jackass or this is a troll because you get at least the maximum number from your HD as HP.
Also your system is shit. A human sized character that's healthy enough to adventure really probably won't die from a single sling stone working at the high end of it's normal damage.
That would require a critical hit, or something, like, crushing your skull.
Play Dungeon Fantasy you idiot. If this isn't a troll. Even if it is, play Dungeon Fantasy from Gurps.

"Might suck at level one, but you'll RIP at level nine!"

You're describing a mage that is shittier than any level one wizard from any DnD system that I'm aware of
Evan Myers
Because your friends weren't protecting you. The party mage should always be behind the tanks.
Jackson Sullivan
Shouldn't you have started at 6 HP? Or am I forgetting how that works?
Kayden Price
He could be playing pre-3rd edition. The mages were often like that, but in our games, we'd houserule max hit points for the mage, etc. So, your DM is kind of strict.
Adam Anderson
Maybe don't make yourself the center of attention with only 2 hp?
Levi Perez
Shouldn't you have a crossbow or something?
William Garcia
>Shouldn't you have started at 6 HP?
No. Not all editions did this.
Lincoln Taylor
Pretty sure they had more than one spell
Landon Murphy
>dies on the spot >from having -1 HP
That isn't how that works.
Cameron Cruz
>cleric already used their one healing spell for the day >tries to make a heal check >AOO >cleric -1/8 >try to make a heal check >AOO >fighter -1/10 >try to make a heal check >AOO >thief -1/6
Jose Barnes
>the party is literally retarded No, that's what the problem is.
Andrew Hernandez
>That isn't how that works.
According to classic D&D it is. Ditto with 1d4 hit die and non-max HP at level 1.
Of course, you'd know that if you weren't born yesterday.
Evan White
Correct, 2nd Edition didn't top you off automatically, and they had d4s instead of d6s for wizards. Had a wizard died from what the DM described as a "graze of an arrow that narrowly missed him." Lots of fun.
Liam Sanders
>playing oldschool D&D
>when better alternatives exist
Kevin Butler
Who the fuck gets Magic missile and not Sleep or Color Spray at level 1?
Adrian James
>be fighter >roll HP = 1 >die instantly to fart >le ebin greentext >caster hate.jpg
Leo Cox
2nd edition was like that, roll for HP and random amounts of stats at level 1.
Landon Ortiz
We used to think it sucked until our best player noticed it was all part of party balance. Back in the day, a stock adventuring party all had an important job that contributed to the overall group.
Also, those graphs illustrating XP progression depending on class. In the end, the mage would end up the most powerful character. Thus, it was necessary to start out the most uh, crippled.
Gabriel Cooper
"Better alternatives" meaning that, no matter what class you pick, you will always feel like the most special and creative snowflake of them all.

Thanks user. I'll make this into a T-shirt.
Jayden Howard
I'd wear it.
Sebastian Thomas
this level 1 utility spells are your bread and butter. the damage comes later
Thomas Hall
i feel for you bro, fucking plebs and their new editions dont know our pain
Landon Lee
Never played 1e, huh?
Eli Hernandez
Actually pre 3.X D&D had you roll for HP at level 1.
And 3.X has mage types who can get knocked out by a single slung stone at level 1, and then potentially bleed to death.
The idea in older editions like you're probably playing, if you buy into it, is that mages start weak and then get overpowered. Personally I think that's stupid, but that's how the game runs.
Camden Mitchell
>sling stones can't kill people

Brandon Nelson
Agreed. >Fighter gets 10hp +3 for con bonus >Wear any arnor >wield any weapon >Does more damage with his strength bonus then a wizards best spell Fighters are OP
Michael Lopez
Hey, come crying to me when in an AD&D party with two fighters, both roll a 1 for HP.
>>I waste my one and only spell use for the day on a Magic Missile spell, which doesn't inflict enough damage to kill even one enemy
Why the FUCK would you chose MM for your only spell? I could go get my AD&D books and check but there are so many better options. Fucking Sleep or Grease you idiot. You're not a damage dealer until you get 4th or 5th level magics
Ryder Scott
the best damage dealing spell in the game is a level 3 spell. It is haste.
Luke Bailey
>playing any osr game >not having multiple characters of different classes
Nathan Brown
Wouldn't that eventually kill you of old age in early editions?
Jaxon Rogers
It could potentially kill as soon as you cast it on them. Magical aging forced a system shock roll. Fail that, you die.
