Each nation of animal-eared people has its own element of magic that they worship.
Wars are for real-real because Balkoth is a dick.
There's a lot more tension between nations as a result. In addition, each nation has a "rival" that they just won't get along with without serious peace-making involved.

...at least, that's how it'd go if the settings melded. As a transplant, it's just the main cast getting summoned as hero/commander units of their element. Which isn't bad, but it's a bit meh. I mean, it could be interesting if they were all summoned to different nations and had to try to make peace between all of them somehow... actually, that's pretty good. Political cloak-and-dagger campaign. Fight wars on the surface with real consequences while trying to manipulate events for the best.
