A memo text is a note you can leave for yourself on your withdrawal from the exchange it doesn't affect the xlm withdrawal itself you can leave it empty

the memo is required on certain exchanges like bittrex, idk about wallets in general, but ledger's client doesn't require memo.
Be aware that bittrex closes wallets "for maintenance" during high volume, if you plan to send your xlm on bittrex at that kind of time you're fucked.
