Spanish Stand User Quest

The year is 1936, and the Spanish Civil War has just begun. The Republicans look to have the upper hand, holding their territories against the fascist right. Brothers kill brothers, and yesterday´s neighbours and friends are now enemies.

But, unknown to the majority of the populace, both groups have begun using people with special abilities to further their own ends in the war, and the fascists are getting support open from both Germany and Italy, while the rest of the world stands in fear of intervention causing a second world war. If it continues like this, the Republic stands little chance of winning, but the workings of fate are mysterious, and someone is about to begin a very bizarre journey which might change the outcome of the war.

But you know nothing of this, or do you? Who are you, about to begin your bizarre adventure? Will you change the outcome of this war?
>A young man in the countryside, who has yet to take a side. (+1 Con)
>A republican soldier, sure in the victory of your side, oblivious yet to the horrors of war (+1 Str)
>An Asturian miner, sided with the republic, who fights to defends his home (+1 Cha)
>Other: Write-in?
((This is indeed a JoJo quest. Historical events will be mantained more or less the same as long as you don´t get yourself involved, with some changes i won´t spoil. The stats will be decided in character creation, and the Stand that will come out will depend on said stats.
i´ll try to keep my political views out of this, okay? ))

>A young man in the countryside, who has yet to take a side. (+1 Con)

oh great. I already got my first
post.
I´ve already ran on qst, and while it was okay, i don´t plan to run there again unless it´s obligatory.
Of course, you could always just filter quests. It´s not that hard.

Okay, so
>A young man in the countryside, who has yet to take a side. (+1 Con)
wins. Writing!

Your name is José Quintana, and you´ve lived in the countryside for all your life, helping your family tend to the crops you´ve needed to survive. Your economical situation is not very good- and you couldn´t study much, because you were needed at home, but you know how to read and write [Int=3]- You have a younger sister, aged 4, named Maria- She´s the person you love the most, and you always remember to bring her a gift when you go to sell whatever you can, even if you can´t get anything for yourself as a result.
When the war broke out, you were found out through a friend of yours, and were shocked-Surely, it would end quickly, right? There´s no way the republic could lose to such a small group, when the main group was located across the sea, in Africa. You didn´t take any side, believing it would blow over quickly, and you believe your life wouldn´t change much, whoever wins this.

You keep a secret from everyone- you´re possesed by an "evil spirit", and it´s been there for as long as you remember. You haven´t told anyone about it for fear of being excommunicated- Like many of the rural inhabitants of Spain, you´re very religious. This spirit seems to have strange abilities indeed, for it´s power allows you to:
>[] Control metallic substances. You found out when your hoe broke, and the spirit was able to fix it by fusing the broken pieces together. Since then, you´ve used it to move farm tools when nobody saw you, to finish the work quicker. (Iron Maiden)
>[] Make solid light constructions that shine brightly. Not very good for stealth, and you haven´t been able to use it for anything, as it´d be very hard to hide. (Rainbow in the Dark)
>[] Turn things to stone. You found out when you were attacked by a stray dog, and managed to survive barely when your spirit turned it to stone. You know you could probably use this in a fight, but you haven´t done so yet (We Will Rock You):
Also, roll 6d5 for stand statistics, please.

Rolled 2, 5, 2, 4, 3, 1 = 17 (6d5)

>[] Control metallic substances. You found out when your hoe broke, and the spirit was able to fix it by fusing the broken pieces together. Since then, you´ve used it to move farm tools when nobody saw you, to finish the work quicker. (Iron Maiden)

Alright, it seems like Iron Maiden wins.
Seems like we´ve got a slow day.
Now, please assign those rolls to the following stats:
STAND:[IRON MAIDEN]
Ability: Metal manipulation
Destructive Power:(?)
Speed:(?)
Range:(?)
Durability:(?)

Okay then. Writing...

>stahp my feefee hurt!!!
You HAVE to go back spic.

The evil spirit, which you´ve named "Iron Maiden" for it´s female appearance and metallic looks, complete with spikes covering it´s body, is the secret you´ve kept from everyone. It´s ability to control metals in a (rather crude) manner has proved useful to you in speeding up your work, but it´s range and precision are not great. You´ve tried to move it the furthest you can from your body, but your current maximum range is of 1 meter for the main body, and a 5 meter area for it´s abilities. It´s ability makes the metals move in a very hard to control manner, but you found out that you can make moving (or falling) metal stop in midair, as you realized when the tool rack almost fell on top of you. You wouldn´t have made it out of that one if it wasn´t for your spirit, which has made you appreciate it, rather than fear it. After all, it´s never hurt you before.

As you are working the fields, your father tells you that the army has begun recruiting people from villages forcibly, due to a lack of manpower. You reluctantly go to the town hall, where the Republicans are calling out the names of those that are to be recruited to follow into the fight. You guess the situation is not as good for the Republic as you originally though. You fear you might be recruited and have to leave your family behind is made true when your name is called out, and you are told to walk forward. You...
>Accept that you have to fight for your country. Refusing might lead to them just beating you up.
>Refuse. Use your spirit if neccesary (Will make people afraid of your abilities)
>Flee, using your spirit if neccesary.

>Flee, using your spirit if neccesary

Alright, we´re fleeing from the recruiters armed with guns. good thing you picked Iron Maiden
Please roll 1d20. Bonuses will be added for a good plan if you give one.

Rolled 9 (1d20)

Tbh we just need to break LOS as soon as possible.

Oh man, you´re lucky there were no Stand users in the group, you barely made it.
>Writing.

You can´t leave your family behind. Not to go to this war, to kill fellow Spaniards. You can´t stand the thought of having to kill another human being, to break the laws of God in a fight for ideals you don´t share, for people you don´t know. You break into a sprint, your legs trained by countless days of working from morning till dusk.
"STOP! Get back here!" Shouts one of the recruiters, chasing after you. The other young men in the group look at you, then to their friends in the group, and also start running. There are not enough men in the recruiting group to catch you all, and while one or two are caught, you manage to barely escape the grasp of the one chasing you by using your spirit to push his weapon, which he was carrying, backwards- making him lose grip of it and stop to pick it back up. When he looks up again, you´re already too far for him to catch, but to his credit, he doesn´t seem to give up.
"GET BACK HERE YOU COWARD!"
You opt not to answer to his taunt and speed up further. You know you can´t stay in the town now, not after fleeing from the recruiting- and your family might suffer the consequences of you fleeing. You hand´t thought of that, but now it is too late.
You only wish that your little sister will not get hurt, and- What is she doing in front of you?
"Brother! Over here!" She shouts, backing into an alley.
You...
>Follow her into the alley. Your sister would never lay a trap for you.
>Keep running. It´s best not to involve her into this.
>Other: Write-in.

>Follow her into the alley
What could possibly go wrong?

Do you wan´t me to answer that?
Oh well, writing...

You follow your Maria into the alley, trusting your little sister fully, and completely failing to notice the man already standing inside the alley, who cuts your escape route.
"Well well, what do we have here?" The stranger asks, striking a menacing pose. Who is this man, and- He must have threatened your little sister to make her call out for you, your realise. You burn with anger you didn´t know you could have, and call for your evil spirit-
"IRON MAIDEN!"
And it responds to your call, standing by your side. The man looks at it with surprise- but you were sure nobody but you could see the spirit!
"So my suspicions were true, you are a Stand user too, eh?" He asks.
"You made quite a ruckus back there. A lot of the would-be recruits escaped, and the military is planning to reinforce the security next time. You won´t be able to escape again, not alone"
Do you...
>Listen to him. He seems to know about your evil spirit, so you might be able to find out more about it.
>Strike him down quickly. He used your sister to trick you into coming here, he must not have good intentions.
>Other: Write-in?

>Listen to him. He seems to know about your evil spirit, so you might be able to find out more about it.

[spoilers] When do we awaken our Masters?

Well, the Spanish Civil War happened before WW2, but since germany had a hand in there, you will get to see the cyborg armies.
If you do want to AWAKEN YOUR MASTERS... or become a vampire since there IS a stone mask, won´t spoil where it is though, i guess you´ll have to survive the civil war first.
Writing!

I honestly can't remember who won the real war, but i hope fascism wins this time around. It'd bring many keks.

I haven't been in a JoJo's quest before nor finished all of its lore. So fuck ya, Why would't I want to become a MASTER, or vampire. Either or.

Fascism won in the original timeline, Franco ruled till the 70s when he died and his successor (who was the crown prince of the old monarchy) restored democratic, constitutional monarchy to Spain.

You decide that you should listen to the man, because he seems to know what your evil spirit is. Perhaps he´s some sort of exorcist?
"An exorcist? Oh no no, nothing of the sort, young man. But first, I apologize for using your lovely little sister to bring you here, i couldn´t just think of a better way to get your attention"
"He said he was going to help you with that spirit of yours!" Mary says, happily. Since when did she know about it? You thought you had hidden it so well...
"That´s not an evil spirit you have, boy. It´s something called a "Stand", a personification of your fighting spirit, of your hidden potential. It´s something that´s deciding the outcome of this war" The man says, looking at you straight in the eye.
"What do you mean deciding the course of the war? You mean the falangists have spiri- eh, Stands too?"
"Not only the falangists have them. It seems like the germans have found a way to give some high-ranking soldiers Stands, and have shared with General Franco and his men. The Republic? They have a few with natural ones, like yours."
"And where do you feature in all of this?"
"I´m just trying to stop this damm war before we all get killed by those Nazis. The stupid EEUU won´t help us because they´re scared of Hitler, the damm fools."
The man seems to favor the Republic, but he assures you he´s just trying to stop the war altogether. If he has such lofty aspirations, then...
"Yes. I have a Stand, too. Allow me to show you." The man then switches his pose to another, even more flamboyant one. He´s... kind of weird. A bit too dramatic for your liking.
"Fiesta pagana!"
Suddenly, another evil spirit appears beside the man! This must be his Stand- a shirtless, well-built man with a demonic face and a crooked cross emblazoned in his torso- Truly a fearsome visage. You wonder if it has an ability, like yours...
>Ask the man about the Stand´s ability.
>Ask him what he wants of you
>Other:Write-in?

>Ask the man about the Stand's Ability

Fierce powers to go with the fierce appearance?

Ah, I almost forgot to inform you- There might be a few things different from JoJo canon, such as a Pillar Man in Asturias, but nothing too major.
I could make a pastebin with the Stands you´ve encountered so far after every update, that´d be ok?

>Ask the man about the Stand´s ability.

Ah, did it? I also meant Facism as in the whole of Germany.

>Ask about the man´s Stand ability
writing...

Yeah, that would be fine.
Oh, in Germany? Well, that's a completely different story, mi amigo. ;^D Though personally, I wouldn't mind a reverse of the real-life outcome where Spain is Republican and everyone else is Socialist or Fascist.

Nah, We need to have the three super powers just living in peace. America, Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. I can dream. ;-;

>A quest based on my favorite series that takes place in my country
Already sold on this.

"So what´s your Stand´s ability, Mister...?"
"My name is Francisco Sánchez, young man- and I´d have expected you to ask me that sooner. But, since I already know your name, we´ll skip that. [Fiesta Pagana]´s ability is to summon fierce woodland creatures and control other animals in the area. I´ve heard from your sister that your ability has something to do with metals?"
You ponder for a second on how your sister found out about your ability, but shake off the thought. She had always been very perceptive.
"[Iron Maiden]´s ability is to move and control metals" You say. "It´s not very precise or has a lot of range, but i´m working on that. When I began to use it, it could barely reach an arm´s lenght, but it seems to be growing fast." You were quite afraid of it´s growing power before, but now, you feel like it´s growth might be key to keeping you alive, if what this man´s saying is true. If the falangists are employing these Stands, things might get very bizarre, very quickly...
"So what do you say, José? Will you help me stop this stupid war?"
That´s quite the endeavor. You would have to leave behind your family, after hearing that the fascists are even more dangerous than you imagined, and possibly even fight both sides of the conflict in order to survive.
"Don´t worry about your family. I have a couple of friends who´ll take care of everything around here" He says.
You...
>[] Accept the man´s offer. It´s time for this war to stop.
>[] Decline the man´s offer. It´s best you stay out of this (Why?)
>[] Other: Write-in?
Hola!
I´ll just be letting you know... Hitler has a Stand.
So if you want to achieve this, it might be hard.

>Peace
>Between the Soviets and the Nazis

That's not gonna happen, mi amigo, I'm sorry.

>Accept
It's time to end this pointless suffering.

Also, time to ora-ora-ora Hitler.

>[] Accept the man´s offer. It´s time for this war to stop.

whelp fuck, Time to side with the winner team.

Brah, trust me. Those aren't Nazi tanks on the boarder. Go back to bed.

>[] Decline the man´s offer. It´s best you stay out of this (Why?) We have to protect our family, also I want the fascists to win, fuck commies and anarchists

>Hola!
>No "¡" sign
Not a real spainman.

So accepting the offer wins!
Writing...
Do you guys want me to give you my twitter so I can post when i start a thread, or is it not needed?

I meant the Hitler thing because he has a Stand so if we live long enough to get dragged into Nazi shenanigans, it'll be time for a Stand battle with Hitler.
Seems like our new mentor just wants the war to end to avoid the Nazis killing Spaniards, whether its fascist or republican rule doesn't matter. Just not Nazi rule.
God yes, please.

How consistent can you be? If you can be good about it, no need. If not, it'd be a good idea

Always post the twitter mate, It helps most users keep track of QM's and encase you can't run a certain day we can have for-warning.

Are we gonna Pose off with Hitler while Berlin is burning? You're a commie ain't you Dice?

But namefag, that sets us against nazis who are backing fascists, ergo we will fight the fascists more than the republicans.

>Mago de Oz

Will we pose off? Yes.
Am I a communist? No. I agree with parts of the socialist ideals, however, I enjoy the innovation and competition of capitalism too much to want a socialist/communist paradise.

Essentially, I'm too finicky in my political and economical beliefs.
I want a Republican Spain, you want a Fascist Germany. We just have to win enough to chase out the Nazis and ensure the former. Beyond that, we don't have to fuck with Europe and instead let the Stand users of other nations decide it.

Sounds like we're gonna have a Stand off. I want Fascism to win in general this time around.

COME DICE, BARE YOUR CHEST. THE WINNER WILL DECIDE THE VICTOR HERE.

You decide to accept the man´s offer. You´re tired of this war already.
"Good! I see it was the right choice to talk to you about this, José. Your sister was right, you´re truly a gold-hearted fellow".
Aw. You sister´s so sweet- and prone to blabbing off about you to stangers, apparently. You might need to talk to her about that.
You ask the man what his plans even are. Surely he has SOMETHING planned, if he wants to do something as big as stop a whole war.
"Ah, I knew you´d ask me about that. Remember the Asturias uprising, two years ago?"
The miner´s one? You had a family member over there, you recall. It was a major strikea gainst the entry of the Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right into the government, because the workers believed it would result in them losing their rights, or so you recall.
"Well, we believe that Asturias will be a prime target for the falangists, and we know that the north in general mostly siding with the Republic- But my friends over there inform me that major Republic agents there are being mysteriously killed in broad daylight, without the killer ever being found. I believe that this might be a Stand user´s work- And we should stop them, if we want the people over there to survive"
>Agree with his plan (Go to Asturias)
>Ask if there are any other suspicious attacks on either group that might be caused by stand users (Other fights?)
>Other:Write-In
i don´t need to like it to put it here, you know.
...My twitter is @Dawngeongaming
There is obviously the possibility of the Hitler pose-off.

Stop spoiling everything in the first thread you fuck.

How are you going to deliver a shocking revelation if we already know all the juicy bits?

Hint at it, never confirm doe.

>Historical events will be mantained more or less the same as long as you don´t get yourself involved

The quest should end with the PC getting shot in the back by a Commie from the PCE during the purges of the CNT-FAI and PSOE. :^)

>Agree with his plan

But user, how do you know i´m not lying
But you´re right. I´ll stop that.
I´m going to have dinner soon, will keep the thread going if Its up when i get back. Will try to run every day I can.

>Ask if there are any other suspicious attacks on either group that might be caused by stand users (Other fights?)

>Ask if there are any other suspicious attacks on either group that might be caused by stand users (Other fights?)

user the fucking twist would be Hitler NOT having a stand.

>Ask if there are any other suspicious attacks on either group that might be caused by stand users (Other fights?)
No harm in asking before deciding to either go with option A or not.

>The fucking twist would be Hitler NOT having a stand.
Exactly.

Asking about other possible Stands is a go.
Good move, too.
Writing...

You ask Francisco about other possible enemy Stand users.
"Well..." he says, producing a map from his backpack, and pointing at several places "If Germany is giving the high-ranking officers Stands, then General Franco, currently in Morroco, is very likely to have one, but we don´t know what it could do. Next, we know some people in the southern areas, like Andalucia, have seemingly turned fanatically loyal to the falangists, but that could be normal- if it wasn´t for our contacts there going silent after Franco´s brother plane flew over them. He might also be a Stand user. We currently know nothing of other possible Stand users, but i´ll try to keep you informed with what my little friends tell me."
You now know of the possible Stand users that Francisco suspects- Franco, his brother, and an unknown Stand user in Asturias. You...
>Go for the unknown stand user
>Go for Franco. Time to stop the war from the root
>Go for Franco´s brother. He´s already in Spain, and his Stand´s abilities could prove very detrimental for your plans.

>Which every one lets us win the war for Fascist Spain..

I know fuck all about the Spanish civil war. ;-; Sorry if my answer is vague.

>Go for the unknown stand user
Somehow, I feel like going straight for the Franco family right off the bat would be a bad idea.

None of them do. We'd need to go for the leadership of Republican Spain, not for the Francos.

>We have to stop the fascists
Fine
>Franco
Then can we target the republicans? We can't reach stop the atrocities We won't succeed unless we disorganize every side.

Disorganizing both sides doesn't lead to peace, it leads to anarchy. Anarchy leads to further death and suffering as the soldiers of the civil war and the remaining generals and leaders find nothing for them and instead resort to banditry and creating their own factions to seize control.

If we remove Franco and his brother though, the Fascist side will fall into chaos as Fascism relies on the force of personality of the leader. Unless there is a clear successor to that leader, the organization will fall into infighting and be destroyed by their adversaries.

I say we go after Franco's brother, he seems like he'd be the most impending threat to the delicate balance of the war if he has a stand that strong.

After we could probably go to Asturias and leave Franco himself for last. After all it'd be pretty anticlimatic if we beat him in the first mission.

On the other hand, Franco's brother might be a bit too much to handle yet, making Asturias the most logical choice.

Do we STILL have family up there?, that'd be pretty crucial to easing the quest if we can get some intel from him.

Anyways:

>Write in: Ask Francisco if he'll accompany us

Basque guy here, hoping this becomes popular.

It's either systematic death and suffering or disorganized death and suffering, and since we already route-locked against fascism and once again, fuck the commies I have to take the disorganized fighting over those goddamn republicans.

Ax you whore, did Tech die?

QM can we betray the republic and help the Fascist?

You can be against both fascism and soviets though.
It´s just the soviets will help the Republic.
You still have family in Asturias.

We seem to have a tie?
1xunknown
1xFranco
1xFranco´s brother.
You are not sided with the republic atm. It´s just that the known stand users are part of the fascists atm.
i´m a republican myself. I´m just letting you do whatever because i promised not to let my politics taint a quest

Ugh, I had no time to finish it due to school, and ultimately it died. It has no true ending, so it is to the players to decide. Sorry about that.

Hi, glad to see someone who probably has learned a lot more about this than the most of us as a player.

>all of this betrayal
>and I just want to stop the illegal coup by the power-hungry generals
;;
So one, could we help the Republicans but ask that the Soviets stay the fuck out? Two, Ax, can you provide a final vote?

Fascist spain already won irl. You'd really don't have to do anything for that to be the outcome of the war.

I don't like fascists one bit, but I respect if you'd like to have them. Its all for fu after all.

Be more ambitious if you are going down that way though. Aim not only to beat the republic, but also go on to win WW2 for the Nazis, gas the jews and become Franco's successor. Or hell, just overthrow Hitler, Mussolini and Franco and become the God-Emperor of Natsoc while you are at it.

Good, I was the user with no clue who to go after.

Ah, well thanks for telling me. It was an honest blast mate and hope your schooling shit pans out. You're a good mate.

WE MUST MAKE SPAIN GREAT AGAIN user. Either way the country can't take part in the war because its fucking war torn.

>A Spaniard
>overthrowing Hitler
>And expecting the Nazis to accept this
>Overthrowing Mussolini
>And expecting the Neo-Romans to accept this

That's gonna be a tough route.

I would vote for Unknown. Fuck Franco and his entire dwarfish family.

Question.

Is using names in quest threads a custom or something?

>Quoting Trump
>When we're playing a Spaniard

I think you might be a bit confused.
I'm gonna like you, Ax.

What?, Ain't ya' tough enough?

I planned on it, Had the name off. I want the Nazi's to win WW2. I would like to see QM's take on it. My inner /pol/lock is screaming to wake up. Save meee

Well i mean... its a civil war, so we'd have to make Spain great again to take part or at least the nation to be involved in WW2.

Well, some people who do a lot of quests like to namefag.
Seems like Unknown wins.
You guys are in for a treat~
i´ll start writing. I´ll keep running for a while.

Guy, the republican forces are all leftists and many of the commie/socialist persuasion. I don't just want to screw the USSR.
Also,
>Franco
Voter here, switching to his brother

Well, no. It's just certain people like to do it for various reasons. I mostly like to do it so that people can recognize me and be friendly with me/tell me to eat shit without getting me confused with other people.

QMs though have to use the names along with secured trips to ensure no one's screwing with the quest by pretending to be there.
True, just got a laugh at the irony.
Well, I guess we are pretty metal.

Alot of Qm's fear the Salt mind for when I arrive and roll it goes tits up for somebody. So for me its custom while in a quest. However its also heavily shunned because a few fuckers ruin it because they shitpost every and... well we're also an user board.

I wonder how we can limit the full extent of the damage. I do know Spain gets really fucked cause of this war.

>i don´t need to like it to put it here, you know.
You dirty liar you know you love that shit.

You decide to go against the mysterious stand user. His targeted, broad-daylight assasination of Republic sympathisers is going to wreck the morale of the common people, and might cause them to turn to the falangists side. You probably aren´t strong enough yet to take on Franco, who is probably heavily guarded, and though his brother is probably going to cause a lot of trouble down the line, he´s too far away to be reachable without letting the unknown man run rampant for far too long.
"I see, so we´ll be sticking to the original plan. I´ll accompany you, of course! We´ll be meeting with some of my friends when we reach Asturias, but it´ll be a lenghty trip, specially since we´ll have to cross some active warzones to get there as quick as we can- but with your Stand, it shouldn´t be too much trouble. We can safely take some of the more wild routes thanks to [Fiesta Pagana], and it shouldn´t be too hard to get horses with it..."
Francisco starts explaining his plans on how to locate the Stand user, who seems to be located in Gijon- exactly where your family member, Xuan, lives- And he´s a known sympathiser of the Republic. You might need to hurry.
--
>Roll me 1d20, please. Crit fails/successes apply, you currently have 1 (ne) reroll

Rolled 9 (1d20)

AWAKEN MASTERS.

>I do know Spain gets really fucked cause of this war.

You have no fucking idea, there are thousands of people whose parents and grandparents were buried in the middle of nowhere and whose locations aren't searched or revealed by the current government because the fascists won, a lot of the population still remembers the dictatorship with nostalgia and officially because they don't want to stir the past...

My name came because I recently saw a quest thread where four 99s and a 97 were all rolled at various times on d100s. The dice were strong with Kuro that day.

See, this is why I don't want Franco to win. ;;

Hrrrmph. On one hand, it could be handy. On the other this is an anonymous board. I think I'll just put and remove it whenever I think its appropriate.

Jeez thats.. honestly kinda extreme. Not even the Civil war in America was that bad.

I know, I'm the Pervy sage. I saw you're birth. I will also see your death.

Okay then, it seems like your highest roll is 14. You wouldn´t want to reroll now, with the Stand fight maybe coming up, would you...?
DC passed. You don´t encounter any problems until you get to Gijon- no Stand users have been found on the trip.
Writing.

PRAISE JIRAIYA-SENSEI!
Hahahahahaha, no, saving that reroll for when we need to show a fucker the strength of having Magneto the Stand.

((Having all these people in my quests again makes me so happy, i´ll try to keep this more consistent than Dungeon Builder))
--
Your trip across Spain proves rather uneventful- It really wasn´t that long, and Francisco made what could have been an otherwise boring trip into a pretty enjoyable experience- even if he sometimes lifted a girl´s skirt with his Stand, although you will admit it was pretty funny.
You have arrived at Gijon, and the sheer... blandness of the buildings strikes you as odd. This is definitely different from how your brother described it. Everyone also looks the same, and- Where did Francisco go?
You feel as if something unnatural is happening.
