In AD&D? Oh yes. 3 shots a round to start, 1d4+strength bonus damage, weapon speed 1, and with the iterative attacks a fighter could get he could throw up to 6 a round with specialist damage. He could kill a wizard before the wizard could finish any dangerous spell.

I know it's mostly for fluff and extremely limited, but I love using enemies to beat enemies. I rolled a barbarian in a game than ran to lol 15. My favorite thing I ever did was pick up a seige engine and throw it into another seige engine. Duel wielding kobolds is always fun, too.
