>n Guy Haley's Throneworld, a Shadow Seer and a Death Jester kill a dozen Custodes between the two of them, before being brought down by "hundreds" more. Note that, although Throneworld is set 1500 years after the Horus Heresy, it's clear that the Custodes were still equipped with golden armour, so inadequate equipment is not an excuse for their poor showing.

Anyone else concerned how Custodes have been rendered into nothing but punching bags used by authors to demonstrate the power of their super special OC's?

Harlequins used to be outrageously strong in the fluff so it's probably just one author writing his preferred wank (that maybe he grew up with) instead of the Custodes wank you preferred.

I'm sorry it hurts you.

Custodes became super special OC's with Visions/Horus Heresy series. Before that they were armorless honor guard. Shadowseers and Harlies are way older special snowflakes, and it's good someone remembers that once in a while.

>armorless honor guard

source?

Custodes have just been super wanked by the fanbase, creating unrealistic expectations of them.
Meanwhile Captain Artemis, a space marine, managed to solo a Death Jester easily.

>Meanwhile Captain Artemis, a space marine, managed to solo a Death Jester easily.

Wow, he shot an unarmed opponent who had set down his weapon for a parley. What an amazing hero!

>Wow, he shot an unarmed opponent who had set down his weapon for a parley.

You mean he was fast enough to press his bolt pistol against its head, forcing it to try and parley to save its life.

The jester put his gun down. Artemis did absolutely nothing.

Artemis was fast enough to press his bolt pistol against its head.
He shows a clear level of speed that the Custodes lack.
The Death Jester then tried to parley, but he was at Artemis mercy the entire time.

They use to be bare chested and not completely loyal to the Big E bro.

Someone post the text.

Cool, still, sauce? It's not that I don't believe you, I just want to learn more.

>Anyone else concerned how BIG SCARY FACTION UNIT have been rendered into nothing but punching bags used by authors to demonstrate the power of their super special OC's?
This has been a problem for many years now.

rogue trader rulebook, according to it they are now armorless and wear black in memory of the Emperor.

HH says Custodian beat Horus.
Garro beats Custodian in HH audio drama.
Custodians are both overpowerd and underpowerd in books.

They weren't even created by Big E, just a group of badass mercs hired by him.

Valdor beat Horus in a duel right after they picked up Lemon Rust and earnedbhis respect. The primarchs were still very young at that point, Horus himself being within the age of recruitment for the space marines.

Each custode could vary vastly in power levels as each is made individually and catered to their genetics. Would explain why some can be beaten by a high ranking space marine and others literally chopping the heads off of 3 captains, with all eyes on him at the time, before anyone can react or even see him move.

Post Golden Throne custodes, yes.
Before that, they were armored as seen in Visions.

That was retconned later because having a legion of bodyguards that aren't totally loyal to you or wearing armor co.parable to your rank and file superhuman army was stupid.

That picture was portraying them as they were when Big E was kicking it crusade style.

What was retconned?
Do they still wear the armor after the Emperor was throne'd?

They were also still better than Marines (who were more shit then anyway) and in particular, were packing some real heat.

Just because they didn't wear much armor didn't mean they were weak. They could potentially be packing digital weapons, and various kinds of field or shield generators, and the staff wasn't bad either IIRC.

But then, Rogue Trader is weird. Grox. You do not mess with Grox. Grox can maul Marines to death.

What is a Grox? Kind of looks like a tubby Krayt Dragon, although I believe they are generally more Dewback sized.

Them wearing armor at all was retconned, originally during the unification wars and crusade they were naked minus a loin cloth and helmet.

In The Beast Arises series they were shown to be wedding their golden armor, another retconned. Then again it could have simply been the Companions of The Emperor, the 300 custodes that guard them corpse god himself that are allowed to wear armor, who the fuck knows

Well yeah they were better than marines, why would he even bother having them if he had better warriors being massed produced.

They were akinned to the Geno soldiers but cranked up to an 12.

Also early warhamner was weird as fuck, people can bitch about new fluff all they want but at least it's somewhat consistent

So Beast series puts them back in the golden armor, compared to the RT fluff where they abandoned it after the Emperor was throne'd.
Alright, I dig.

Custodes beating Horus sounds fanwanky. In what book and page did it happen.

Maybe the Custodes have been wasting away?

In the Inqusition Wars novels they encounter a Custode in the basement randomly shooting at rats.
They're not the best and brightest.

Other way round: the 300 Companions are the naked awesome ones. The rest are armored and less awesome. According to the old fluff.

It was the head of the Custodes Constantin Valdor.

To be fair it's Terra the rats underneath the palace my be giant and/or sentient.

>Garro beats Custodian in HH audio drama.
That was because the Custodian was arrogant and got careless.
It was implied that he outclassed Garro and most other space marines.

The observation given in The First Heretic is that custodians one on one are superior but they are trained both physically and mentally as individuals they do not fight cohesively together unlike space marines which have more of a squad mentality, it makes sense in that custodes are first and foremost the Emperors bodyguard while space marines are designed to win wars.

>it makes sense

No it doesn't, if body guards are shitty acting as a squad they may as well not exist. Just chalk it up to ADB being a retard again and move on.

I think Grox are still scary in 40k.

>this level of fanboyism
it fucking hurts to read.

a deathjester is a range specialist,
eldar agility wouldnt work at point blank if he was to try and go for his massive two handed heavy weapon that is literally as tall as he is while a space marine points a pistol - which excels at close quarters and is faster on the draw - at him and fires while his guard was down.

Now if he did this to a solitaire, I'd give him props, but this is just cringey
