Depends entirely whether that means stand-alone RPG in the sense of "compiled set of GURPS rules (with some options) so you don't have to pick your own from the entirety of GURPS to run your game, but is still compatible with the rest of GURPS" or stand-alone in the sense of "we slapped the word GURPS on this to sell more."
Could have gone for better presentation and a better title, but as someone looking in to running a fantasy campaign in GURPS, this looks promising. I honestly would be down to pay for this. Hopefully it has all of the GURPS Dungeon Fantasy rules included, as last time I checked each Dungeon Fantasy book was short and seperate, with no compiled version existing.
Logan Wood
>It will be compatible with GURPS but you won’t need to know or invest in GURPS
Bentley Gomez
This looks cool.
Justin Baker
> or stand-alone in the sense of "we slapped the word GURPS on this to sell more." What does "powered by GURPS" mean to you? This isn't Arcanum.
Thomas King
I might buy it. Sounds like a good excuse for someone who's never played GURPS (like me) to give it a chance.
Andrew Sanders
>Steve Jackson Games It burns, make it stop! Make it stop!
Asher Gray
They need to make a Munchkin GURPS tie in and proceed to rake in cash desu
It's a stand alone purchase, complete in one box. You don't even need the Basic Set, it's Powered by GURPS which in the past has meant its based on GURPS Lite plus extras.
Anthony Davis
Lots of interesting news in this interview about it.
That's actually pretty cool. I hope to see a sizable fantasy bestiary to go with this. The illustrations are actually pretty good. If only the font was better. Let's hope that they say exactly what content is in this later. From what I can tell they are revising and improving a lot of the dungeon fantasy stuff, but I hope that it doesn't leave out content from the more recent dungeon fantasy books.
Brayden Gonzalez
>Space Opera GURPS boxset Sheeeeeeeeeiiit that'd be awesome.
Thomas Gutierrez
Here's hoping the find actual editors for this one.
I'll probably pledge anyway. The world needs more fantasy games powered by GURPS.
Nicholas Wright
I've wanted this to happen for about ten years. Dungeon Fantasy really needed a facelift.
Colton Bennett
Same thought as me
Noah Turner
Well. SJ Games DOES have the money to push it out without the kickstarter to be honest. They have Munchkin and other games that sell like wildfire still after all these years and some other not very admirable products that also still sell.
Won't be giving money to the kickstarter. I do hope though that they will push this out even then. BUT I do hope that if they are planning to include miniatures they would be actual miniatures and not some cheap ass cardboard tokens as they have been so fond of all these years.
This product will sell. As anything made by SJ Games. As a side note though. I like buying actual books for games. SJ Games hasn't really printed out anything for quite some time. Mostly just PDF's. There is not inherently wrong in using pdf's but when I'm at gaming table, I'd like to strangle people for brining out 5 laptops to the game. But it seems that it is how it works nowdays.
Daniel Anderson
It's hard to get dead tree GURPS these days. I hope these kits will encourage more books to get printed or for SJG to at last get to a real goddamn Print on Demand solution so you could acutely get the goddamn Magic book.
I'm down with it though. GURPS is a great system.
Kayden Price
>This is not "all the GURPS Dungeon Fantasy supplements and related Pyramid issues in one place I hope they'll at least make a list of what's not included.
SJ Games as a whole as the money, but it's still hard to push a product that brings in less than it cost to make, user.
Dominic Jones
Well. I have every book related to GURPS 3rd and 4th editions that was printed and available in LGS from the past 14 years (so not _everything_ just a lot.) I think I've given all support that I have been able. I'm happy that they try this but still I'm bit disappointed with this. Just like re-releasing that Car Wars game for few extra bucks was like a slap to the face. The game just felt really old (as it is DESU). I've had those original Car Wars tokens and Uncle Al's from the 80's. After that there was nothing related to Car Wars. Not even clarifications for old rules. Just re-release. It wasn't fresh enough for proper re-release. This leads me to the problem with the (upcoming) kickstarter.
It just bothers me that this Dungeon Fantasy box doesn't really feel fresh enough. Especially now that they stated they'll have CARBOARD figures. Fucking CARBOARD. Nowdays it is practically as cheap to ask for miniatures for your project from Reaper as it is to pay for the artist to draw and self print those cardboard figures. It just feels really cheap. Do they really want to even try to compete with other game companies? At least make this box feel fresh and not some Grognard beard package from 90's. Even Pathfinder has official iconic miniatures. I wouldn't even mind poor sculpted miniatures but I prefer them over cardboard. Only company I've expected carboard and been happy has been Cheap Ass Games and that is how they even market their games.
I just hope they create a good product that has something to appeal to people. Nowdays visual representation is really important.
Blake Rivera
>Especially now that they stated they'll have CARBOARD figures...Pathfinder has official iconic miniatures
The Pathfinder beginner box uses Pawns, grumpanonasaurus. And it looks like that's the kind of niche that SJG is trying to hit. This box isn't aimed at long-time GURPS fans, it's aimed at getting newfolk into GURPS in a culture where the Basic Set's presentation is considered "intimidating" and the product line is obscure to people off this board at the best of times.
John Nelson
The Kickstarter is mostly to gauge how much people want it; it's essentially a preorder system by my estimate so they don't churn out 10k units and end up selling only around 2k. This is the first time they've produced a 4e standalone product, and on top of that it's deadtree *and* a box set -- it's a huge departure from the norm so SJG wants to make sure the market they think is there actually is there.
True that I'm grumpanonsaurus and you made a good point. Still though, you can get those official miniatures from Reaper if you want. Oh well...
I do like the idea of the box but I'm just bit sceptic on how SJG is going to do it. Also it seems that pledging 50 $ and paying 65 $ shipping... Yeah right... I'll wait for finished product.
Anthony Howard
It's $15 shipping, $50 for the box. Not $65 + $50. Bad math.
John Gonzalez
You're a retard. Read more closely. It's 15$ for US shipping, 65$ for Euro shipping.
Christopher Peterson
What if I only want the pdfs?
Aiden Jackson
Currently, they aren't planning on offering pdf's for any of the 5 books in the boxed set, but there's a lot of discussion about that on the official forums right now, so maybe that will change.
Lucas Richardson
>Box set includes all the color books Not bad. I am debating whether I want the screen or not, but as I already have all of the PDFs it looks like I have an easy decision.
I kind of wish that they had the basic set as an add on, or even other books like GURPS Magic and Low Tech.
Pledge whatever the price of all the PDFs you want is and then pick them through the pledge manager
Christian Harris
GURPS Arcanum when?
Plus, the DF box set is going to include relevant rules updates and improvements - there's a comment by Phil Masters that it's essentially a Hack and Slash subset of GURPS 4.5.
Jaxon Collins
PDFs are probably going to be a stretch goal - it'd undermine the dead tree sales and make the box set effort more-or-less pointless if there was a cheaper pdf offering from the start.
Caleb Roberts
PDF is now a addon
Cameron Turner
So based on what I read, this is more of a book and article compilation which is streamlined and branded under the name "dungeon fantasy".
Rather than it being a 3D dungeon crawler like Heroquest (like dungeon furniture, minis, etc) it's more of a "system" with paper stand-ins and small grid maps similar to old Ad&d modules. I guess I mean to say much of the "play" is done in the players mind rather than on a physical grid using a dice based combat resolution system.
So at the "I want it all" backing level the main physical merch is a box, five books, a DM screen, and a code to download PDFs?
I've never backed anything on KS, and this seems more like a set of reading material than anything else, am I wrong?
Benjamin Gutierrez
No that's right. If you are looking at this kickstarter for minis and battle maps, then look elsewhere. Mechnically you can do fights via theater of the mind if you use the simplified combat rules from the Characters book, so it can be even less board-gamey in that aspect. Dungeon Fantasy (As opposed to GURPS Fantasy) is very much going for the AD&D style. One of the books even has details on how to use a level system rather than a point buy system as GURPS usually does.
If you are looking for hard cover illustrated books that cover what is IMO the best sword and sorcery RPG currently, then it is what you are looking for. The PDFs include more content for those that want it.
Wyatt Hernandez
>If you are looking for hard cover illustrated books that cover what is IMO the best sword and sorcery RPG currently
Why it's the best S&S rpg currently in your opinion? Genuine question.
Adam Foster
Not that guy, but Barbarians of Lemuria is pretty good.
Luis Gray
Really tight tactical combat, tons of character creation options rolled up with a point buy and template system, good core resolution mechanics (3d6 and the sexy bell curve), heroic realism so you don't have any cartoony damage sponges, and rules for anything you could want.
And I don't mean content as in what PF has going on with a million redundant classes. I mean well written rules for a lot of stuff ranging from different martial arts techniques to feudal land management. There is a lot that can be gotten into, but I definitely think it does the dungeon fantasy better than D&D.
The only real downside is that the art has traditionally been crappy, and you also need to take the time to pick and choose what rules you are using. Even inside the Dungeon Fantasy books you may not think that letting people play as minotaurs fits the tone of your campaign for example, which can be overwhelming for newbies. This kickstarter seems to be intent on fixing all of that however.
Isaiah Harris
For better or worse I find it odd that there are sooooooooooo many systems for fantasy role playing and that there is still a market for stuff like this.
Mind you SJ and Gurps have such a huge cult following that it's like a "if your print it they will come" cliche.
What makes RPG X more repayable than RPG Y is beyond me, and I bet has more to do with your Veeky Forumsroup than the actual system/game you are playing.
I really appreciate your thoughts though and it is admittingly compelling to get in on the ground floor of something that might turn bigger in the future.
> make a system universal so not to bind it to the re-hashed tropes of fantasy role playing > accepted > players use the system to play fantasy anyway > 30 years later back at square 1
The more things change....
Henry Howard
I would definitely agree with this as well. In the end if your group finds something with much simpler rules like to be more up your alley, or something like World of Synnabar to satisfy your autism more than GURPS ever could, then you should play that instead. For me I like GURPS, it does everything I want it to do as I can customize every facet of it to fit my setting using its well written supplements.
Nathan Morales
I agree I guess, though I wasn't introduced to RPGs through high fantasy systems and I haven't played them much so maybe the novelty hasn't worn off on me, but now that I think about it a GURPS game would be pretty fun as a GM. You could have a magical artifact in a chest and it's just a tommy gun. You could Make the BBEG all use modern weaponry that they unearthed and trained in for years, and the PCs have to rely on spells and swords. The wide variety of splatbooks GURPS has can be used tastefully to make some really neat stuff. It's all there if you want it. I think that makes it a little hotter as a high fantasy system. Just don't go too far into the multiverse shit otherwise you get non-sequitur and lose the edge.
