Trap solutions

G'day, Veeky Forums.
I'm facing a problem in a game of D&D. Our party just bested some dragonborn in a dungeon, and in our down-time we discovered a pool filled with acid, but with a LOT of gold at the bottom.

What are some creative, low-tech solutions for dealing with a situation like this? We have a mage-hand, but that'll take a long time. We thought about boiling the acid with fire spells, but we've no idea what that'll do to the gold, OR to the acid. We even considered diluting it with an ever-flowing flask.

What are some creative solutions to problems like this?
Also, trap stories in general thread.

Neutralize the acid with a base.

What kind?

Drain the pool. Perhaps digging under it and making an opening in the pool?

Pump the acid out using materials that are acid-resistant. Like whatever the pool's made of.

If you have a spell for acid-immunity, use that to help you get it out.

Limestone and Lime are natural bases.

Boiling the acid would likely either concentrate it further or turn it into a cloud of killy gas.

reduce it with water until it no longer burns you

DO NOT BOIL ACID

use the ethereal plane

channel it out into a hole you dig next to it

use acid resistant poles with nets made of non meltable material

>Room with a gigantic statue of a knight with a sword drawn.
>light singing down form a domed ceiling, covering most of the room, with only a few shadows.
>trial and error reveals that stepping into the light activates the trap, the statue spinning it's sword in a wide circle.
>creep across shadows made by bookshelves and other statues.
>See the trap mechanism hidden behind a panel on the direct opposite side of the room.
>bind a chain CAREFULLY to the statue's sword-arm.
>weave some rope through the other end of the chain and tie it tight, giving it more length.
> creep through the network of shadows once more to the trap's panel.
>feed the rope into the gears-and-crystal mechanism.
> step into the light.
>the aim was to stop the thing from spinning.
>the sword spins, yanking the chain, the rope, and the entire mechanism out of the wall.
>the statue spins twice, unbalanced and unguided, before breaking its platform, bouncing out of its pivot and tumbling across the floor.
>trap sorted.

How deep is the pool and what are the time constraints?

Easiest way is to poke a hole in the bottom of the pool and let it drain.

Alternately just carve a bucket out of whatever stone the sides are made of and start bailing the acid out.

If you have any vials of acid just pour that out and start using those to empty the thing.

Add water. A shit ton. It brings the pH level down and makes the acid not burn. But be careful, acid flips the fuck out when you add water, so be careful of splashes. Water is a base to acids and water is an acid to bases because it is true neutral.
Use a golden fishing net.
Drain the acid.
Also if it's not eating through its container, it might be fairly weak acid.
Make sure when you get the coins to rinse them off.

What if you could use such a trap to handle a mob chasing you? Maybe they are aware of it but then if you're forced into combat there you could set the trap off intentionally and force them to fight defensively.

Some acids (eg vinegar) are weak enough that you can safely stick your hand in them to get the gold. So stick a piece of your dead enemies in the acid to see how quickly the acid reacts with it.

Lets go over the solutions presented here:
>Drain the acid with a hole to elsewhere. Maybe down, maybe to another plane.
Just be careful about the locals of wherever you're draining the acid to.

Just remember that some drops of acid will remain on the gold after draining. So have a plan to deal with that.
>Neutralise the acid
Anything that reacts with the acid will reduce the acid remaining to react with you. Something alkaline is the obvious option, but even the bodies of your enemies would work. Though you might not like the sludge left over after it's reacted with them.

>Use something (gold net, telekinesis, etc) to get the gold out.
Whatever you're using doesn't need to be immune to the acid. It just needs to last long enough to lift the gold.

Again, beware of drops of acid on the gold afterwards.

>Boil the acid.
That's how you get acidic gas. You don't want that.

>Dilute the acid with water.
Could work, if you get enough water somehow. But that has its own problems:
- The pool likely can't hold much more liquid than it's already holding. Pour water in and the slightly diluted acid will flow over the sides, likely to where you are standing.
- Flooding the dungeon. Sure, you've dealt with the acid, but now you need to get down through the water to the gold.

Bottle the acid and sell it to chemists and foundries. More gold!

Best post.

Depends on the acid. If it's magical 'fuck everything' acid it might have some value.

Fetch the gold with a trained gelatinous cube.

DRINK IT

first off, I'm gonna say 99% chance that the gold is an illusion, or is in some way immobile.

But taking at face value, I need to know some of the resources you have available. how much time do you have? What level are you guys, what classes? What items, magic and mundane, do you have access to? What spells? Anyone with specific skillsets?

OP here. No time constraints (all of the bad guys are dead, thanks to a fantastically played entanglement spell by the druid, something by the paladin which made sure all of their save rolls failed on delivery, and an over-zealous warlock with "Hunger of Hadar", causing everybody to soil their armor).

Resources are basic supplies and a couple of magic items (a wand of paralysis and an ever flowing flask being two). plenty of magical firepower, but nothing which presents immediate solutions. lots of firey-death stuff from the druid, blasting stuff or tentacle stuff from the warlock, healing and rage form the paladin and a dick-ass rogue with breathtaking stealth checks. Everyone's level 5.
And probably about a thousand gold pieces between us.

5E? If so then I would say have the druid use windwall. The spell sends anything light (like most liquids) straight up, while heavy things(like gold) would stay on the ground. Use windwall on the entirety of the pool, it'll lift the acid up (and with a little foresight not back down) giving the other party members time to grab the loot.

Alternatively, fish it out bit by bit with your standard issue 10ft pole net attachment.

Best bet is to dilute with H2O if the pool can accommodate extra volume.

Adding base will neutralize it quicker but will produce a tremendous amount of heat because formation of water is an exothermic.

Have the dick-ass rogue sneak past the acid so it doesn't have a chance to burn him and steal the gold.

You could ignore the gold and not get everyone killed trying something "creative".

What kind of monsters were killed, Anything with a silicon or glass body. If so use some string and make a puppet out of it, use him to get gold and then leave the puppet at the bottom of the pool.

freaky half-lizard people, half-black dragon hybrids.

>half-black dragon
Could be useful.
