Mage Chantry Quest

Twelve years ago today the Umbra was lost to us. The old masters are missing presumed dead, as are innumerable amounts of lore and artifacts. We have recovered, to an extent, but not nearly to the levels that we once were. The only bright side is that the Ascension War has, for the most part, ended. You are a leader of one of the surviving Chantries, a place where mages can live, work magic, and store their lore.

Order of Hermes: Old fashioned wizards, with the robes, the wands, and all that good stuff.

Celestial Chorus: Religious miracle-workers. The mainstream subscribes to a universalist religion, but there's members of most religions among them.

Euthanos: Assassins, and death cultists. Work to balance karma by punishing people who do bad things and rewarding people who do good.

Cult of Ecstasy: Use sex, drugs, and rock and roll to see beyond the illusion that is reality.

Dreamspeakers: Traditional shamans and medicine men from native cultures around the world.

Verbena: Traditional European pagans.

Sons of Ether: Mad scientists. Believe that true science requires coolness, not replicability.

Akashic Brotherhood: Kung-fu monks and other eastern magical practitioners.

Virtual Adepts: Computer hackers that have learned to hack reality.

These are all members of the Nine Mystical Traditions, an organization united to free humanity from the Technocracy. The Technocracy is devoted to wiping out magic and rendering the world safe for normal humans to live in, as well as advancing technology.

The Technocracy is made up of:

The Syndicate: Money guys, the super rich, and big business.

The New World Order: Spies, academics, the media, all serving the idea of a one world government.

Progenitors: Super-biologists

Iteration X: Super-engineers and 'hard scientists'

Void Engineers: Space explorers.

Calling it for Virtual Adepts!

The Virtual Adepts have a number of belief systems, all related to numbers and computers. Essentially, they believe that with computers and numbers you can control the world, or that the world is actually a computer simulation. They are hackers without peer, and have an entire virtual reality called the Digital Web.

But more importantly, what kind of things are you good at?

You have five points to spend between Mental, Physical and Social. A point adds 10 to a 1d100, with most people having one in one.

So for instance, you could take 3 Mental 1 Physical 1 Social.

Additionally, you can spend one point to get two on a more specific area. For instance, you could spend one point on Firearms, thus getting two points to everything involving firearms.

So, okay, what rules are we using? Are the Talents, skills and knowledge the same as the Storyteller's ones?

And... Where are we in the timeline? this is obviously post 3e, but are we in M20? And... What M20 Reality are you using, is the avatar storm over?

About the points:

Next up is your Magic. By default you have 21 points to spend here, as well as two Spheres automatically at 2. These two are Favored, and cost one less to buy.Raising a sphere or Enlightenment costs the new level in points. If you want to you can save some points here.

The spheres are different, and are more based on Mage the Awakening than oMage. And Data is from Convention Book NWO, which predates M20.

Is using Correspondence 2/Mind 2 to cause instantaneous orgasms possibly? I never had the chance to try this at a conventional table.

Mind 2 can distract and humiliate. Just cast a spell with the goal of 'distracting and humiliating.' Mind 2 can make targets feel emotions.

Extra space: room for living, recreation, and more.
Digital Web: Have the place in the Web rather than IRL.
Militant: Your people know how to fight and have access to weaponry.

Please explain these:
Extra Mages(Do i already start with a few mages even if i don't select this?)
Extra Sorcerers(How good is a sorcerer in this system?Do i normally already get them like mages?)
Protected(Normal protections or magical ones?)
Digital Web(do i get ANOTHER Chantry,or the one i have becomes digital?)

Why not take Extra Money, Extra Space and Protected, and have a mansion as a chantry?

Because everything counts in large amounts. With that much manpower, we can take the money, space and land that we want.

You Start with two, plus yourself. A Sorcerer is someone who can cast at least one spell without being a Mage. Beyond that their power varies greatly. The Digital Web option moves most of the Chantry to the Web, with a small portion of it in realspace.

Man, have you ever played Mage? The Ascension War may be over, but the technocracy can still come to kill our asses if we get too much attention.

And while most traditions are amicable, i think that half of them could try to screw us over depending on what we try to do.

However we can. My point is it's easier to use the points to get the Sorcerers and acquire the other elements in game than doing it the opposite way.

Last bit: Where is your Chantry located?

Any limitations in this choice?

Not really. It's more of a flavor thing; if you pick Hong Kong you'll be dealing with the Wu Lung and Akashics and Technocratic oppression more. If you pick Nigeria you'll be dealing with Dreamspeakers fighting Syndics over oil, and so on. And of course most of your characters will fit into the area that you choose.

I'm thinking of Akihabara, any advice?

Akihabara is a solid choice. It would be better if you had Public Front though, (I'll allow you to change it if you want) as you'd be able to interact with all the otaku more easily, and look for recruits that way.

Another interesting option may be the "Liberdade" District in São Paulo, we could be a bastion of Otakulture in the second country with more japanese in the world... What would you have in mind then?

Any lurkers? We could use some suggestions, no harm in hearing some options in this.

In Brazil you have a mix between the Syndic and Ecstatic Cartels, native Dreamspeakers, and Celestial Chorus, as well as the rest of the Technocracy and Traditions, though to a lesser extent. Again, it would be better if you had chosen Public Front, as that would let you interact with the consumer stuff.

Japan is a heady mix between Technocrats and Trads, with the Emperor being carefully neutral in a way that both sides can say that he's on 'their side, really.' It's got Dreamspeakers, Virtual Adepts, Akashics, as well as a lot of Technocrats and lesser numbers of all the other Traditions.

If we choose Brasil, Is Liberdade one of those "culture mix zones" where Kuei-jin can be born and things of both cultures can come from the umbra?

And is the emperor and archmage or something?

The Emperor is not an Archmage, and few people are sure if he's actually a mage, a human, or something else.

Liberdade is heavily mixed, yes. Things from the Umbra take a variety of forms there, though I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the Kuei-Jin yet.

And about the protagonist, i was thinking of something like this, his parents were technocrats from syndicate, but were too occupied to really pay attention to him, so he grew up on too much anime and were awakened in the end of his teenager years, but at this time he we're too much of an anarchist and weaboo to really care about rules like the time table and so on, and end up creating his own chantry away from the stern glare of his parents... That just let in go because they think it's just a rebellious fase and he will come back for money or THE TRUTH eventually.

Ana was crippled in a car accident when she was young, and turned to video games to take her mind of her injuries. Her scores were so good, that she got scouted by Iteration X. However, little did they know that she had already been contacted by the Adepts. Iteration X fixed her, the Adepts jailbroke her new cybernetics, and she escaped with the loot. A perfect op. Ana is a Cyberpunk to an extreme, and is deeply into taking down the forces of the Man, be it Technocrats or Pentex or Vamps. Along the way she became Awakened, and has learned to get more out of her cybernetics than anyone else could.

Morpheus
When Morpheus was a kid, he saw the Matrix. Always a bit odd, he became obsessed with the idea that reality was a simulation, and began trying to hack it, with everything from drugs to meditation. He had some small successes, but ultimately his greatest success came when he Awakened in his late teens. He soon ended up in the Adepts, where he now works to free the simulation from the programs controlling it.

This sounds more like an combination of Matter/Life and maybe Prime.

It is indeed a sphere. It is however a specialty sphere, only used by certain specialists, typically cyborgs.

Adriano isn't a typical Virtual Adept. While others focus on hacking computers or reality, he focuses on hacking minds. With a brief conversation he can have a target eating out of his hand, occasionally literally. However, despite his vast knowledge of the human psyche, he mainly uses it to get laid. Keep him on a tight leash around female associates.

Devilbot is self-described as 'the worlds greatest hacker, and don't you forget it.' Alternatly, he refers to himself as god. Despite his obvious ego, he is a competent programmer and hacker, focused on computer security rather than reality. You'll need to manage his ego carefully, and give him lots of targets.

Not that it's any of my business, OP, but giving options and backstory only someone who's already read the source material (M:tA) could understand and making important choices with literally two people in the thread are both sure-fire ways for your quest to die stillborn.

Haruna is an otaku without peer, and is obsessed with The Digital Web, the internet, and video games, in that order. She spends most of her time in the Web, and has managed to infiltrate many secure sites.

So far... Adriano and Ana seem like the best choices, but i they look like the kind of very problematic VA that ends up getting everyone in trouble.

This reminds me of a thread who had one or two players for more than ten sessions in /quest/.

End is a developer instead of a hacker, focused on building newer and better programs to hack reality. He tends to look down on other Adepts

What about End making us Reality Hacking programs?
I agree that we should have at least one combat able mage... And that Haruna seems very fitting with the setting going on right now(And a hacker is aways good), but being able to "mass produce" magical warfare may be more advantageous, no?

Do we need Quintessence to make the magical programs? Do we have a steady source of it? Would normal humans be able to use it? Would it cause paradox to them if they are "too advanced to the local paradigm"?

He can do that.

You need Quint to make multi-use programs, you don't have any yet, and normal humans can use them. They'll cause paradox if they're too advanced, especially when used by a sleeper that's not 'in the know.'
