Fallen London

I seriously want to run a campaign set in FL. My players don't know anything of the setting, so I'm thinking about using one of the official storyline. I've played FL for a lot of time, but I've forgotten many stories, which do you think would be better for an rpg transposition?
Also, I was thinking of using BRP rules, does anyone have better suggestion? I know about the FATE version on FL, but I'm not able to run that system.

Cave of the Nadir, fighting off creepy bullshit in the forgotten quarter. Maybe working your way up Feducci's fighting rings or hunting a spider council.

It all seems very CoC to me, I'd just work it into that.

I want to say Seeking the Name, even though I know that's a godawful idea in every dimension.

CoC mood is exactly what I'm searching for.

Why? In God's name, why? What can you possibly hope to gain? Stop now. Before it's too late.

The Cheesemaker saga is golden for intrigue

Something like the nemesis story line might work. Or have them hunt for jack. any number of jobs for the department of menace eradication. Solve murders at the university. the possibilities are endless.

Cave of the Nadir is a good idea, let them handle the whole social business with the missionary and the the firebrand, then some action in the forgotten quarter, then the Nadir itself.

You absolute madman...

All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well. All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well. ALL SHALL BE WELL AND ALL SHALL BE WELL AND ALL MANNER OF THING SHALL BE WELL SHALL BE WELL. ALL SHALL BE WELL. ALL SHALL BE WELL. SHALL BE WELL. SHALL BE WELL. SHALL BE WELL. SHALL BE WELL. NOT POSTPONED. NOT IN THE END. NOT FOR LONG.

Man I wish I knew more about Fallen London... Really the most I know of the setting is from playing Sunless Sea and that only told me enough to know that a) I will never know everything about the setting
b) I will never appreciate the setting as much as it deserves
c) I am NEVER going to do the setting justice, as no-one I know can mix humor, creeping uneasiness, horror and Victorian-era high adventure well enough

It's never too late to descend into the Neath and join us Londoners, my delicious fellow.

I wish Fallen London wasn't a complete time-based grindfest. The game is utter shit, the story, when you actually get a bit of it, is great.

It's worth it, user.

It's all so worth it.

So, who is the best Neathy waifu/husbando?

Other players.

Bump.

So, directed at OP or someone else who can answer, I've played Sunless Sea for a while and it's extremely interesting, but I'm not quite sure what's going on in terms of the overall story.

Why did London fall?

Why is the surface/the sun seen as so dangerous an entity and why is sunlight in a box so valuable and illegal?

What is the Dawn Machine? and why do people scream THE SUN when they go near it?

What happened in the Invasion of 68, and is Hell just a name to convey a sentiment about the place, or did they literally invade Hell?

>Why did London fall?

Queen Victoria made a deal with the masters.

>Why is the surface/the sun seen as so dangerous an entity and why is sunlight in a box so valuable and illegal?

The light of the Stars holds the rules of the universe. Rules that Fallen London breaks. Fear the Light.

>What is the Dawn Machine? and why do people scream THE SUN when they go near it?

It's a new Star and Judgement.

>What happened in the Invasion of 68, and is Hell just a name to convey a sentiment about the place, or did they literally invade Hell?

Literally invaded Hell.

Also - Stars are sapient creatures.

Fallen London is a weird crab creature that is in love with the Sun.

The Masters are the Children of the Crab Creature and are working to send a love-letter to the sun to let it know how the crab-thing feels.

What was Victoria's deal?

Why does Fallen London break the rules?

And how does this all fit into the overall plot of the universe/games?

This game gives me some serious Dark Souls vibes in terms of how there's a lot of specific knowledge but the overall picture is really difficult to piece together

>What was Victoria's deal?
Bring back her dead husband in exchange for London. Something along those lines.

>Why does Fallen London break the rules?
IIRC it's an effect of the crab-thing's existence. It just lives by different rules, which affect those around it. It's supposed to be a star-crossed lovers gimmick.

>And how does this all fit into the overall plot of the universe/games?

It's pretty core, but you never really notice it. You have to go out of your way to discover a lot of this. And I'm not even including the really juicy shit about Seeking the Name.

>This game gives me some serious Dark Souls vibes in terms of how there's a lot of specific knowledge but the overall picture is really difficult to piece together

Something like that, yeah.

And then there's the Mountain just for starters.

>Why does Fallen London break the rules

Just as said, light of Stars is the rules. Anything that's been so deep (and hence, away) from their light doesn't have to follow the rules. So it's not just the Fallen London, it's the whole 'neath (or ultimately, anything that stars can't shine on) which can partially ignore rules of nature. Hell, for example, after a recent revolution, doesn't seem to follow any rules or laws (including laws of physics).

Second best, then.

Any lore questions for us, delocious friend?

I'm personally fond of the honey sipping heiress

I have a fondness for a member of the clergy.

Bump

Keep this alive, okay?

So, what are you hoping for for Zubmariner?

Damn... wish I could help, but you've re-ignighted my interest in the setting.

Think about playing some songs from FL's soundtrack, when the right moment arises.
I must say, Veilgarden has some fantastic musicians.

Is there a link to Fallen London's soundtrack posted somewhere?

Consider buying it, if you want to support Failbetter.

Maybe, to introduce them to FL, you could start with The Last Constable and Cheery Man story.

Is this related to Hellgate London?

Awesome setting

Fuck you all, I'm gonna play it again.

I hate you all, my delicious friends

They did a poll recently, asking what people would want to see them release on kickstarter.

A funded RPG was one of their options.

Fingers fucking crossed.

Eh, I always want to go back to it, but then I look at my 130+ stats, see how much I have to grind for back alley items, and quickly lose interest.

Hitting the paywall is a bitch. I stopped playing when I had 200 in each stat, 9 in Notability and my own zubmarine and orphanage. I just...couldn't bring myself to play it anymore.

Why not start again?

I was running multiple accounts in the first place.

This. The writing is good, but you get to see only snippets of it. The gameplay consists of grinding mirthlessly for hours or forking over some of your hard earned cash, which is a real pity.

Seeking the Name would probably be pretty good for a Call of Cthulhu game. Players getting dragged into insanity and worse by their own curiosity and whatnot!

That's why Sunless Sea is much better. Even though it can be grindy, it is only grindy if you set yourself a grind objective, and there's always something to just go and do. The access requirements for story stuff is just to play the game, or to play a story to get something to get access to this story, and so on.

Sunless Sea is more like a roguelite visual novel, whereas Fallen London is a fishing expedition.

I keep seeing things about this game, and the setting and lore keeps looking seriously interesting, but I'm not sure I have the time and patience to commit to the game. I checked the wiki, but it hides everything you'd want to read and only gives you basic completion info. Is there anywhere the story is collected?

It's basically uncollectible. The entire game consists of stories of one form or another, ranging in size from a few paragraphs and a single choice long, to vast novella-length stories, to one designed specifically to test the capacity of the human mind for self-destruction just to see what would happen.

The entire drive of both games is not so much to -win' as it is to find new and interesting stories, and learning new lore information is far more highly prized than any other reward.

You have to find a story you like, read it, and then it will inevitably lead you to another. It can't be 'collected', per se.
