Names Thread

To put it simply, post any and all names you like.

im so interested in where everyone gets their names for NPC's and Characters.

Personally i use names from diablo, they sound so powerful or dramatic, fits my settings a lot.

What about all of you?

one sec, getting names.

Also should there be a minimum since this is a thread about names? like 5 names?

Some of my favorites I'm using in my game

Talric
Rowain
Siggard
Walter Althos
Oliver Cromwell
Roger Mowbrey
Baldenvar
Val Amark
Bahd Goy
Geglash

When I'm braindead for names, I'll open up IMDB to a genre related movie and pick up names from the cast list as I go along.

> having trouble coming up with names

Where did this meme even come from, like who actually has trouble picking from a random registry online.

I use 20000 names dot com

I went to basic with a guy who was really good at coming up with names. I made a setting during the down time (and later lost the notebook, I havnt had the time to remake the setting) and he helped me with namkng. I dunno what his trick was. I'll give a few I remember, some are his and some are mine.

I once had a Sorceress specialized in Enchantment spells named Mary-Annette.

I thought it was clever.

Joakim is my Paladin.
Aldric was my latest Fighter. Before him I was playing a dervish-type man by the name of Ra'askl.
Snail was the name of my last Ranger.

Tinkoh
Reneroth
Kradrak
Durkroon
etc

If you genuinely struggle thinking of names for NPCs etc, just google search name generators.

fantasynamegenerators.com/elf_names.php
fantasynamegenerators.com/dwarf_names.php
fantasynamegenerators.com/demon_names.php
>fantasynamegenerators.com/fursona-names.php

You can find a name generator for just about anything. Just generate a bunch, copy and paste a bunch onto a document and then have them ready at your next session for whenever the party runs into an NPC you weren't prepared for.

Some old timey name for first name, and for last name: A video game + er/ger/fer

Jendric Darksouler
Avaric Overwatcher
Henderson Zeldager

Barnaby Callofdutymodernwarfare3fer

It's "Callofdutymodernwarfarer" the III, actually.
You'll be hearing from my clan about this.

I agree. House of Callofdutymodernwarfarer is sick.

Nigger "Nig" Nigglington the Nth

Tomas Culver.

It works great for nearly any setting.

I assume that's an Aryan name?

Cifal Roach-heart.
Props to anyone who understands why I would name my WtW wizard that.

The only names I feel comfortable with for PCs are either really simple monosyllabic ones or stupid puns. Anything else I'll just spend too much time overthinking it

My current Paladin is named after pic related, 2nd Lieutenant Wulstan Tempest

I wanna do a campaign where everyone has names like "Cicero Darkblade", "Nero ShadowStar" and "Reaper Soulknife". And there's one dude with a name like "Arthur Templeton" who everyone is terrified of cause
> Shit, that guy doesn't have to overcompensate for ANYTHING

Jesus Christ it's beautiful

My curent player are female barbarian human Zonas Matza and a vudrani human alchemist Mahat Mahindra/Gulab Machindramon

...

Try drug names, eventualy you can add some letters at the end.
>King Tessalon III advised by his trusted court wizard Zutripro send a brave knight, Lady Arbinoxa von Allfen to find famed sword of Naramin, the only weapon which can kill the demon Mucinex pilling the countryside.

Fodar (the earth, God, The Father)
Qaun (the storm, the moon, God, the brother)

Shougahm Qurn (barbarian king)
Shoug (lost son, Dreamblind)
Qurn (other lost son, cares for Dreamblind brother)
Kurnam (a great hunter)

Grab some syllables and whack them together. Or do something vaguely Germanic sounding of a normal name.

I'd steal from the other language I'm almost native level in but it's Japanese

I have a bad habit of using alliterative names. I'm addicted.

Everyone gets a title or nickname. Bandits get S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-esque nicknames, like Rook, Boar or Pickle. Nobility have extremely hard to remember family names that resemble a mashup of Russian and French. I always remember, of course, because I keep the names written down. Officials and police always refer to others by their professions and titles, to the point of it becoming somewhat overbearing in normal conversation. But the more crooked officials will slip and call someone by their plain name, just to seem a bit less "by the books".

Well, here are some from our DH campaign (some are fully or partially taken from the name tables in the rulebooks, some are allusions):

Magos Ulma Metatron
Adept Tantalus
Alpha-Xi 32
Adept Polyphemus
Adept Selektra Core
Adept Celeron
Magos Orion

I name all my characters around the "Mackie Messer" song and all it covers.
youtube.com/watch?v=y8cpCbDDL8s

Macky, Mackie, MacHeath, and so on. I'm not very inventive.

I recently thought up a great name for a warhammer pc/npc or - especially - a villain.

Jacob Kreutzfeldt.

I have a 36-page long document full of ship names from Veeky Forums and /k/, if anyone's interested.

Anyone got some really good names from Turkey, the Middle East and/or Indonesia? Anything that could evoke the sense of being in a strange foreign land.

What, like joke names or actual names?

I dunno. I improvise names pretty well. I think about actors or I mishmash line-of-sight objects.
My default male name is Eric, female is Anya, and I have no idea why.
Recurring NPC roles also have a "set" name that is easy to remember in relation to their role. There can be a LOT of variants on the same kind of unimportant npc. Think of them as the equivalent of Cut-me-own-throat-Dibbler or Nurse Joy.
So a guard will usually be Sargeant Serge (Sergueï in a cold setting, Sarji in a desert setting and so on). It's cross-table too : since I GM for a guy who's also got a table, we share generic NPC names.

no offence but those suck ass

love too can look at lists of german names and pick ones out

Try and find arab names. There should be some random name generators that do that. For the strange and foreign part, you can string names together, arab names can show quite a lot of ancestry if you want a character to be a show-off. You can also give them some sort of title.
Like for example Ahmed Al-Kadi ben Khalid ben Ali ben Omar...

Gimme!

C'mon guys, get some cool names.

i see you get your names from xbox live

I am a sucker for themed names, DBZ-style

I'm so exceptionally terrible at names that I've named several of my characters, and entire quartets of NPCs, after food.

It started with a Halfling named Taters for a friend's pathfinder game. Eyebrows went up, but it was fine. The game continued and I played a Goblin named Crackers. Remarks were made, but nothing more came of it; they liked Crackers.

And then it was my term to DM, and I introduced a quartet of gobboes. Three brothers and a sister.

Poe, Tate, Toe, and Salahad.

Minds were lost, I was accused of heresy and told to kill myself.

...And then they met High Priestess Konfectina...

kek
I like your style

>Poe, Tate, Toe, and Salahad.

So it's a "stuck in a MMO" campaign?

>What, like joke names or actual names?
A bit of both.

I'll link the doc when I get home, I have no idea how to link documents on my phone.

i usually just take a regular word and change it slightly

so a word like 'carnival' would become 'harnivale' and that is the name of a guy. or you can just take a real name and change is slightly. so 'jessica' would become 'lessima' and that is some mermaid or something.

by starting with real words the made up names tend to seem more plausible.

>studied linguistics

Where do I start? Seriously, I don't remember where half of my design docs are. Really gotta set up that database.

But generally, I go collection of phones -> common forms -> naming traditions.

Repeat 4-5 times for other areas, then mix traditions for the border regions.

Sone of the names of my dnd chars

Jaerith
Ziant
Albereth
Frilbo
Longardo
Negrodamus

Slab Bulkhead, Fridge Largemeat, Punt Speedchunk, Butch Deadlift, Bolt Bigplank Splint Chesthair, Flint Ironstag, Bolt Vanderhuge, Thick McRunfast, Blast Hardcheese, Buff Drinklots, Trunk Slamchest, Fist Rockbone, Stump Beefgnaw, Smash Lampjaw, Punch Rockgroin, Buck Plankchest, Stump Chunkman, Dirk Hardpeck, Rip Steakface, Slate Slabrock, Crud Bonemeal, Brick Hardmeat, Rip Sidecheek, Punch Sideiron, Gristle McThornBody, Slake Fistcrunch, Buff Hardback, Bob Johnson, Blast Thickneck, Crunch Buttsteak, Slab Squatthrust, Lump Beefrock, Touch Rustrod, Reef Blastbody, Big McLargeHuge, Smoke Manmuscle, Beat Punchbeef, Pack Blowfist, Roll Fizzlebeef.

>im so interested in where everyone gets their names for NPC's and Characters.
Being Scandinavian I use Scandinavian names. That's it basically.

But all of those names sound fucking retarded.

I need a name for a Pirate Captain
and his Pirate Ship

The captain's name on the 'normal' side, but the ship, I need to sound like it came from outer space

Ridgeget Slidderquick
Gorum Determinate
Helinius the Grounded
Born Turnus
Gorrote Munder
Viffen Vyle
Xim Korrige
Yerti Kex
Lort Schmutz
Kimble Retizen
Fernman Westname
Polen Nytedik
Queck Gurh

As for the ship:
The Furious
The Lost and Found
The Wanderer
The Loner
Ol' Lonely
Solitaire
The Outcast
The Vanquisher
The Indiscernible Intent
The Cause and Effect
The Implacable
The Relentless Hunter
The Vindictive
The Forlorn Hope (which can, after a certain event, become The Immortal Hope)
The Desperate Drifter (or, simply, the Drifter)
The Fortunate Fighter
The bloody thing that came from bloody space
I'm bad at people names.

There are quite a few franchises with which my players are unfamiliar. That means that, fortunately, I can draw upon The Witcher and Dark Souls for names like Volker, Claire, Ricard, Lucatiel, Artorias, Nemrod, Vendrick, Marlene, etc.

I also use fantasynamegenerators.com like a pleb, very selectively picking decent names like Kalinth, Alera, Eonor. It also has lists of real names.

For places, I tend to use the generator or snatch star system names from EVE Online. There's a city in the world called Villore, for example.

The names of the party are:
Roland
Hjalmar (not actually from TW3)
Gerard
Rana

Bigs Mclargehuge

How about Hugh Mungus?

Beat PunchBeef
Bolt VanderHuge
Brick HardMeat
Flint IronStag
Splint ChestHair
Thick McRunFast

In my current setting, all of the names, whether person or place, are English words. A metal worker named Iron Duster, a tunnel called the Long Grunge, etc. This means I can explain everything as being an English translation of the setting's original language, while also not needing to write a conlang.

From a different campaign, I have a character named Charity Kleiner which has no particular reason behind it but I like the sound.

...

Very easy yet very effective method that I use when I'm too lazy to come up with an original name AND too lazy to look at a name list:

I take words (they can be regular names, or just any kind of word really) and I write them backwards.

Peter = Retep
Johnny = Ynnhoj
Annie = Einna
Vacuum cleaner = Muucav Renaelc
etc...

I currently have an NPC called Nohj Wollamhsram in my campain, and the PCs recently passed through a village called Egalliv

I just use fantasy name generator for most things

Here you go, anons.

Mind if I steal those for possible future use?

Longest Silver
Broadside Assange
Hardie McBiscuit
Ol' Wooden Angleshaft
Frost Harder
Mashiv Styx
Penny Dreadnought
Marauding I Hardly Knew Her
Aycros Tebow

...
