Tieflings should be given the freedom to choose their own destiny, as with all free peoples, but it would be remiss not to keep tabs on them.

No. We wouldn't treat an Aasimar the same as the divine beings from which they derive their lineage; like Tieflings, they have the free will to choose their own lot in life. I would no more condemn a Tiefling who chose righteousness than spare an Aasimar who chose evil.

The answer from a metaphysical standpoint is no. Evil in DnD is an objective quality that is not genetic.

Rather, it's partially genetic. Half-Fiends are Always Evil. By the point of Planetouched (who are typically many generations removed from their extraplanar ancestor) however, that impulse is lessened to Usually and therefore deserve all the benefit of doubt.

A tiefling may enter peerage as a paladin the same you and I did. By being true of heart and good in nature. If they can swear their knightly oaths and keep them, they too can battle evil and protect the meek. Appearnace does not define what is evil. EVIL defines what is evil.

Tieflings aren't half-fiends. Their blood is more diluted than that. They have a larger inclination towards evil than the typical human, but that it's small enough that them being evil much more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule. Treat them with some distrust and suspicion, but not antagonism.

Or if you can cast a detect evil spell on them, which 3.5 D&D paladins can do at will as a spell like ability, then do that.
