Veeky Forums is shit

I'm hyperventilating.

That's my only input.

Sounds quite interesting
a shame though
as much as i wanted i simply do not have enough time because of my study

I've already written 334,000 words (568 pages) of an autistic story I will never publish. So I will likely add 10k more during,November, but it,really doesn't matter.

Very nervous first-timer here. Any advice?

>Any advice?

Don't do it.

If I didn't have papers to write for school, I might participate.

This is also my excuse.

I'm gonna fucking do it

Modern fantasy about a magician that gets turned into a loli, it's happening

Love you too fucknut.

I'm going to write a 50'000 word fanfic.

Don't get overwhelmed by the total count, just set aside a little time every day and continue writing.

I'm going to try.

I'm going to cheat a bit and just write something in the same universe as a long running project I have but fuck it I'm going to give it an honest go.

IT'S STARTED

I don't have any high concepts for novels so I'll just try to write small fics to the wordcount.

I was writing this novel before this month, but honestly at this point I have grown entirely unsure of it.
>guy who is a glassblower witnesses daughter of the nobility murder a drug dealer
>she murdered him by turning his head inside out
>forced to be in her service
>she changes his appearance and in order to help her forces a metaphysical parasite onto him
>these metaphysical parasites essentially amount to an original sin, as they are the cause of human failings
>one does not commit sin on their own, but is caused to by these
>those who exert control over parasites, bargain with them are given privy to the Range, which extends in levels of abstraction down from reality
>humans exist on the top layer, but physically interact with those below
>the parasites exist somewhere near the core
>parasites can draw a human closer to the core
>the center is the Lost Choir, which may or may not be one of an original set of human tribes that gave birth humanity's negative side in some unknown event since fallen into obscurity
>on the inter seeding layer numerous beings exist, these being mostly human bodies having been taken and altered by the parasites
>the parasites exemplify numerous emotions, greed, hunger, pride, hatred, melancholy, etc.
>the bodies taken over are warped in a body horror way

>for instance a beast of coreel, named for the High House Coreel (an organization of humans who interact with the parasites), is a parasite given form from rage. It is two fleshy sacks containing the adrenal glands. It will attach to a man and pump them full of adrenaline to throw them into physically stronger rage
>these beasts range in intelligence and complexity, those close to humans being rare and dangerous
>The Waxen Visitor is a famous one to the city, whose head opens at the top to appear similar to the maw of a lampre. His mouth, nose, and ears do not lead anywhere, and he hides the numerous folds of disgusting flesh beneath baggy clothing. He is only famous due to numerous murders he perpetrated
>the story itself follows the main character as he helps the girl protect the city in place of her father who has since grown apathetic due to his own parasite gaining more control than it should, and her brother who seeks only his ambitions
>basically an afraid and desperate girl attempting to be strong and the main character who is naive of the occult world, but is forced to live up to it
>the killing of the drug dealer is a symptom of international influence of the city as it essentially places a weight on the range, and has a deep well to the core
>this causes the city to be a center of debauchery and sin
>also a height of power for those who bargain with the parasites
>the conflict that is covered through most of the book consists of spies and agents for the neighboring nation of Capre attempting to gain a foothold, the serial killed the Waxen Visitor, and the girl's arranged marriage to her distant cousin from the neighboring country

I'm using this as an excuse to finish a story I've been sitting on for a while now. It's about an Arbite in the Cadian System investigating a series of gruesome murders intrinsically linked to an upcoming VIP's visit.

bump

I've always wanted to make a tabletop system based off the stories I want to write, like the guy who wrote Worm.

Fleshing out the Unspeaking Chapter of the Word Bearers, my army. Starting at Calth, all the way through the Shadow Crusade, ending at the beginning of the siege of Terra.

Anyone else fleshing out their characters, universes, whatever? It's a great opportunity as well as motivation to do so.

I've done this for the past....5 years now? Completed 4 of those, somehow.

Good luck everyone!

So anyone who's planning on doing this, what sort of book do you plan on writing?
I got two options bouncing around my head.
The first in is an urban fantasy erotic adventure novel; basically old tales of witches sleeping with demons to gain power was actually the other way around. Turns out its mortals who bang witches gain superpowers,
With the main plot being that a Guy and his unknowing witch girlfriend are dragged into a world of sex, magic and violence while being hunted down by a incestuous pair of witch hunters.
This one could get really weird.

The second option is a dark fantasy story with some post apocalypse and western elements.
A Battle between the living and a nercomatic empire happened many centuries ago. The empire was nearly unbeatable so the gods quarantined them to a large island in the middle of the ocean and set massive stone sentries around so no one could get out. This island eventually began to decay in a desert with its living inhabitants barely able to get by with the necromancer lords biking among each other for more power over the tiny island.
The MC is a blacksmith whose brother is taken as part of the village tribute for the local lord, he decide that enough is enough and sets out to try and free his brother.

And that's pretty much all I got.

I plan to write a fantasy story about a slutty Inquisitor who gets sent on a dangerous mission far away because of her overly lax attitude. She has to rescue a group of slaves, and learn both the positive and negative aspects of those around her, ally or enemy.

I will have to toss a dice between my sci-fi setting or my fantasy one.

Sci-fi setting is basically a giant hypocrite Space USSR facing the unknown horrors of unexplored space and striving to be relevant.

Fantasy setting is also sort-of Fantasy USSR (sorry) sending spies and monks to convert Kingdoms and other stuff to their ideology. Their end goal is basically to catalogue and archive everything from every culture, as their Emperor/God is an incarnation of the god of Knowledge, who sees conquering as the most efficient way to learn about the world. Other enemies include several other incarnations of gods, who have other plans for the world.

I might add some homosex smut or cuddleporn to fill out pages and try my hand at that.

Pretty interesting. Good luck !

I'm gonna do it once I finish up a cyoa.

What do you write to start a book

Page one.

just go with the flow, doesn't have to be great just write 50,000 words and you will have technically "won" NaNoWriMo and you can work out the fine details later.

Both of these sound pretty good and I'd read them. I'm just going to write short stories, mainly because at the moment I don't have an overarching idea and because short fiction seems like a better entry point into writing anyway.

yeah I think I'll going do the first option, it sounds a little light novel-ly but then again so the whole premise in general.
the title will be "my girlfriend's a witch!?"

Hyperventilate. I'll demonstrate again.

Anyone have any good writing music?

I disagree with this whole heartedly. Unless you want to write for simply the sake of writing. No concrete plan will doom a manuscript in the long run. At least a general concept of the characters, themes and plot you want to address should be thought of. It can change later, but if you have no end goals in mind then there is an issue.

Red army choir, Video games ost.

This depends so much on what you want to write, don't even know where to start.

The short story I'm writing kinda took a fairy tale turn. Does that help?

Post rock albums are great for most writing I think. Can't go wrong with pretty much anything by Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, and Godspeed You Black Emperor. Not the best post rock bands by some accounts, but they tend to be thematically consistent enough to not be distracting.

Oh that is... Múm? Something similar icelandic like Björk? This isn't really my field. Maybe the soundtracks of games like Children of Light and Folklore.

Either gonna be writing a cyberpunk story from the perspective of 5 different people, both civilian and military or a story about a man that gets drafted into a WWII-esque war.

So either a sci fi story or a not!Earth historical fiction one.

I just listen to anime OPs and EDs as well as random j rock/pop/idolshit

Is registration on the Nanowrimo website down for anyone else?

Greetings from Veeky Forums

How goes the writing?

Got an almost 2000 word short story down. Feels good.

>someone buys a farm in the Alps
>has no idea about farming and finds out the deal included renovating the whole things
>learns farming the hard way and gets shit going
>finds out there are actually spirits in the forest
>makes a deal with one of them to swap places during the Dead Days (Christmas to January 6) and enters spirit world
>writing this for a video game I'm making

Hello there fellow crossposter!

I haven't actually started writing story proper, still trying to nail down my protagonist a little bit. Fortunately, I alreayd ahve the setting pretty fleshes out, and a few story ideas from past games in said setting.

Shape of it is probably going to be:
>fisherman's daughter lives in a gloomy town in the ass end of nowhere, has few prospects beyond taking up the fishing trade when she's older
>friends with blacksmith apprentice and a weaver's son
>word of trouble brewing on the border far to the east, war of some sort is imminent
>they set off on a long ass trek to find fame and fortune in the coming conflict
>on the way, they join company with two fugitives who are exiled royalty from a foreign nation, fleeing a coup that is the cause of the conflict

I can't get started and I haven't mapped out the story yet, so shitty

How goes it on lit

I'm going to shit out at least over a 1k when I get back from class tonight.

For now I'm getting some studying in and maybe later some ghetto outling so I know what to write in terms of minute details.

I was told to come her from Veeky Forums. What do you guys think of magical realism and literary fiction?

I just want to casually explore the postmodern condition by using talking animals, vague symbolism, and hamfisted references to all sorts of phil and lit.

Veeky Forums is just complaining on and on about "real" writing.

I for one am a big fan of magical realism.

I'm trying to explore modern gender dynamics and what it means to be a sexual being through post cataclysmic samurai and sexual body horror

Jakki?

I always forget Veeky Forums is /d/ light.

I am kinda stuck between which idea I should pick

One's essentially an altfic about PMMM about alien android Homura come to finish a war. I have a couple ideas here and there, a revelation that foreigner Homura is actually impersonating the "real" Akemi Homura whom Madoka met years ago.

The other's essentially a collection (maybe) of stories based on this Gaslight London (with other European mythologies mentioned) reinterpretation of Touhou where Reimu's a perpetually grumpy detective and Marisa's the morally-dubious sidekick.

Excellent, glad to hear it!

Smart move, getting studies out of the way early on.

What have you decided on for your protagonist, aside from her origin? And how much do you want to have nailed down before you start writing?

Oh quite a bit of dissatisfied shitposting.

I'm progressing at a fairly even pace now, trying to round off 3000 before I call it a night.
I believe the story I'm doing will be more in the realm of Veeky Forums than standard Veeky Forumserature. Sci-fi horror.

I never used any programs or specific systems to organize plots, which probably lead to some pacing problems with my first novel. I got yWriter5 now, because it's free and my next projects could have complicated plotlines. Does anyone else use programs like this or do you just make notes? Gotta finish my thesis first, though.

>I for one am a big fan of magical realism.
Glad to hear. I'd share what I've got so far for feedback if I had even an ounce of confidence it was any good.

Sounds /d/elightful.

I do all my notes with pen and paper because it makes it easier to draw the structures and relations with arrows and images. All the actual writing I do in Google Docs (TM)

Posting again a more concise version of the summary

Been working on this for longer than a month, but really unsure of it now:
>main character, Lauro, is a glass blower forced into the service of a daughter of the High House of Morell, Noemi, after witnessing her murder a drug dealer
>has a metaphysical parasite forcibly implanted into his psyche
>these parasites, the Emblems of Noet are the root cause of all human failings
>The Eblems exist upon the Range, metaphysical levels of consciousness and physicality heading towards pure emotion (the idea being negative primal emotions are the true ones)
>At the center of this The Lost Choir represents one of the original nine human tribes, who are now lost to the world in some catastrophic event since fallen out of history, this even likely gave birth to the Emblems (humanity being a perfect species before this)
>The city of note, Rohas Vel, exists upon one such chasm along the range, this both causes it to be a center of debauchery & depravity, as well as a center of power
>Numerous high houses, all of which claim to origins to the tribes make up the High Houses, an government consisting of the Congregation of Enlightened Masters, named the Elechar.
>The parasites will attempt to turn a man through vice into a beast that is not human, this is far more prevalent in those who make deals with them (as it allows the two to feed upon each other)
>These beasts exist upon the range, hidden from sight but intractable with normal man

Shit, I forgot this was happening this time of year.

I had a short story about aliens coming to Earth and getting corrupted by the concept of human hubris and live in massive golden space stations while Earth is turned into a cyberpunk wasteland for their amusement. The story centers around a servant to the aliens sent to Earth for an arbitrary mission and a cyborg trying to find his friends.

>The Beast of Coreel is one such, two fleshy sacks containing the human adrenal glands that attach to the neck of a man and pump him full of adrenaline. The High House Coreel traces its origin to the quasi-emotion of rage.
>Most beasts are non-sapient, however a few grow into creatures not unlike humans
>One such is the Waxen Stranger, who feeds upon humans (its mouth, nose, and ears do not lead anywhere, merely divots in smooth flesh, the top of its head opens to show the maw of an enormous lamprey)
>The plot of the book consists of the main character being forced to hunt foreign agents from the neighboring Republic of Capre who seek to gain a foothold for their cabals in the city for the first half
>This leads into two competing plots, the daughter of the High House's arranged marriage to a distant cousin in a foreign land
>The second is a grisly series of murders perpetrated by The Waxen Stranger
>Noemi is essentially forced to confront the situation and responsibilities of her house alone as her father faces a protracted losing battle with a Emblem of Apathy, which forces him for weeks on end to be incapable of speaking, and her Brother's ambitious rise to power among the House of Enlightened Masters and attempted use of the former Archduke's bloodline to establish a new blood agnostic High House likening its origin to Grief
>The main character first is disgusted and horrified by the lengths Noemi is willing to go to, but realizes he loves her despite it, and seeks to save her
>He does this while he himself is having an Emblem of Regret eat away at his psyche

Thoughts?

What should I name the main character and love interest

What the fuck is wrong with furries Jesus

I'm in for the eighth year in a row, but this time I have no idea what to write about.

What are they like as characters? I always choose names that etymologically fits the characters personality.

I still haven't decided which setting I'm going to use
()

One's a younger insecure and angry loner type

The other is more of a ditsy stereotypical 20 year old white girl

Why is a furry compelling a Serbian nationalist to kill the arch-duke of Austria?

Wojak and Stacy.

hokay

Because furries are everywhere.

Woah shit, my wife was telling me we should go do it, I didn't think it'd pop up here.

Anyway I've been dredging up a modern London magic/detective series based on JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Hellblazer for some time now, wanted to use it to push novel magical and sci-fi+fantasy concepts. Gonna try and use nanowrimo to try and push the first novel out.

Any thoughts?

Interesting concept, a lot of pretty fleshed out ideas, a sense of where the plot goes. It's not my cup of tea, but it looks good for what it is. All you gotta do now is keep writing.

Her name is Alis. She's nineteen, and though isn't unhappy with a life of fishing, she is far from content. Her great grandfather was a monster hunter and fought in a holy war; she spends a lot of her time fantasizing about taking up his legacy and travelling east. She's ambitious and confident, though it is partially a cover for her being self-conscious of her competence and lack of experience. Her father is a greying man named Gules, who despite his age still goes out on his boat six days a week. He's a caring father, but it is clear that he relied on his late wife for most of the parenting. Her mother, Emmeline, passed away from sickness when she was twelve.

She's about five and a half feet tall, lean but with a physique accustomed to manual labour. Her hair is penny-brown, shoulder length and bordering on frizzy from extended exposure to salt water; it is more often than not loosely tied back for practicality. Her eyes are gray and bright, like stone awash in sea spray.

I think I'm just about to get typing, just trying to figure out how long I should weave the characters together for before the herald arrives bringing news of trouble.

What are you writing user?

This seems really well thought out and neat. Like the other user said, it's not quite my style of fantasy, but it seems cool and unorthodox. I'd probably give it a try.

I have no idea what to write.

Help me Veeky Forums.

What setting have you always wanted to play as a character in?

Write that character's story.

Roll a number between 1 and 1200

Write the Infinite Jest of fantasy.

Do it and replace the names later.

>So anyone who's planning on doing this, what sort of book do you plan on writing?
It's sort of like a side novel within a little universe I've been trying to get off the ground for a while.

Basic idea is that in the near future people are kind of shit obsessed with AR to the point where the youth are in revolt starting shit while trying to shape their cities the way they want them in that little false reality.

The novel will follow a guy who gets involved because he sees it as a way to get some money.

Just a fun little idea.

That first idea sure is something. Something. Being a prude who really doesn't belong on Veeky Forums I'd say go for the second.

Fantasy Noir...under the sea! That's all I got.

One day I will write a fantasy story from the perspective of a librarian who joins a group of adventurers to seek the world for rare books and lost literature. Most of the time the narration will focus on him geeking out about weird literature while trying to avoid any real adventure and danger.

Neat concept, but hard to pull off if you're going to be referencing in-world books with no real-world counterparts. Would read if well executed.

>have a strong, documented setting and a solid idea of story and characters
>have no idea how to start writing the first scene

Rolled 434 (1d1200)

That part's easy, trying to come up with an arc can be tricky though.
Rikkubg

Already pretty good, though most setting underwater/on the sea tends to be extremely boring. Also, it sounds a bit like Bioshock somehow.

Anyone got suggestions for ?

You just start writing a scene. Don't bother with any kind of introduction, just write it like you would write the rest of the book. You can always look back at it, if it worked out, afterwards, but can't do this if you don't write anything.

Start with dialogue. Worked pretty well for me.

>434
>A group of amateur sleuths solves mysteries in their community.

>The genre changes each arc, with the same characters but in different timelines, settings and rules. (grimdark cyberpunk in one arc, slice of life school tale in another, to name but a few)

>The protagonist is the only character aware of the change.

here, this is something

Woah, what, that's cool.

Do you have some chart for this?

Nawh, just a list I have from a couple years ago

dropbox.com/s/kcfy6d54lo6ov2a/Updated List.txt?dl=0

Alright I managed to squeeze something out, after about a half an hour of hemming and hawing and false starting.

The small hull rolls with the swells, a wooden baby in the arms of its mother. The sails, stained dark from fresh droplets of rain, snap to the arryhthm of the wind. So too does the wind drive lashes of salt spray across the young woman’s bare arms, but she pays no mind as she hauls on a ragged rope: her skin is already slick with the toils of pulling in the fishing net.
“Either I’m getting older, Alis, or you are!” the man laughs to her as he strains against his own rope.
Between grunt-marked heaves she returns with a crack, “at the rate you’re going, I’ll be as old as you by the time we get in!”

you don't write novels in present tense, only scripts.

Not the guy you replied to, but why not?

Because it's the death of suspense.

Bretty gud. I like your use of arhythm (because I recently used it similarly). The comparison to mother and child kinda diffuses the overall harshness of the situation that I otherwise felt conveyed. Don't worry too much about about writing something perfect, though, that's what editing is for.

Objectively false.

Name one good novel written in the present tense.

Not that guy but
1. Yes, you can write novels in present tense
2. But, if you do this I will probably hate you
