A New Jersey man kidnapped his friend and stole $1.8 million in virtual money from the man, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Louis Meza, 35, lured his pal into a minivan, where a gunman pointed a pistol at the victim and demanded his 24-word passphrase on Nov. 4, authorities said.
The code was given to Meza, a cryptocurrency investor, and allowed him access to the victim's Ether wallet.
Meza also allegedly looted a ledger and other information to get into the man’s funds from his apartment.
The stolen currency turned up in Meza's account the next day, according to the Manhattan DA Cy Vance Jr.
This case shows “the increasingly common intersection between cyber and violent crime,” Vance said.

I think this could have worked if he planned it a little better and murdered his pal. That way, no one would have snitched on him + by conspiring a better plan, he would have had an alibi.

I'm very impressed by the fact that the victim was able to remember his 24-word passphrase at gunpoint.

In NYC? I would refuse to give it to them and tell them I won't report them because I could get in tax trouble if the government found out about my cryptoshekels.
