If a new Role Playing game was getting ready to come out, promised 12 playable races, 40 classes with a primary/subclass system, and an emphasize on creativity, would you be interested?
Just gauging hype for a game like that. The following is an example of a sales pitch for the game, feel free to give advice:
SALES PITCH ANONYMOUS GAME is a ready to use fantasy board game that can expand into one of the most in content packed games you’ve ever played. In this game, 2-4 Hero Players will create and roleplay a Hero, while 1 GM (Game Master) Player coordinates the story and controls fierce monsters for them to battle.
The setting takes place in a post-apocalyptic, early steampunk and dystopian future, were the civilized society fights a losing battle against Neon and her Fusion Born Sentinels, an organized group of super mutants. Featuring 12 playable races, 40 classes, and over 200 character defining traits, this game offers a rich number of choices for players to create their own Hero. Taking this one step further, a primary/subclass system challenges your creativity, while 18 rank-able feats extend your character’s individual potential.
This game encourages creativity. Want to play as an axe-wielding Paladin of glaciers, that’s also an Engineer with the ability to hack computers? Go for it. Rather be a beautiful half-elf half-felion that can summon animal companions as a Druid, but still relies on her bladed guitar as a Bard? That’s a thing too. As a GM player, guide Hero Players through the sample campaign, or feel free to use the monster creator, ability creator, and NPC (non-player character) creator to build your very own!
ANONYMOUS GAME invites you to challenge your creativity against the brutal forces of this gritty world. Will you survive, or will you and the rest of your party succumb to the wastelands?
Ryder Murphy
>class-based RPG system >when it's almost 2020
Yeesh.
Dominic Kelly
One that is lose though, and only there for an identity purpose and a few starting abilities?
For example, a Warrior/Ninja that wants to pick up Necromancer abilities easily could. Does that still sound as bad?
Christian Bennett
Nice pitch. Is the game done yet?
Parker Martinez
Serious question, how many RPG systems have you played, or at least read in their entirety?
Kayden Nguyen
This sounds horrible.
Austin Clark
Please elaborate, I'll listen to any criticism.
Anthony Russell
You've told me absolutely nothing about the mechanics or why this game is distinct from others on the market. It's a very vague, generic pitch which sounds good but doesn't really hook me. Then again, I'm a jaded asshole who has played so many games I'm really on the look for things which are innovative in some way, and do things differently, so when it comes to a pitch like this that's what I always look for. It's not going to be what most people are thinking about.
Nolan Roberts
Just because you have many options to jam in together does not mean it would be a great idea.
Gavin Jones
It is, mostly optimizing and further play testing at this point. It's a small hit, even had a shop owner test it. Pretty much all positive feedback, with of course everyone has opinions on optimization. Heavily listening to feedback.
Anthony Fisher
Any way for us to see the rules?
Julian Edwards
Sounds like a lot of races and a lot of classes. I think I'd be afraid of lack of characterization of each one, particularly with the races.
Blake Phillips
More does not equal Better. I personally prefer to work with less.
Levi James
>post apocalyptic >steam punk >dystopian
Fucking pick one. This sounds like the Hot Topic of RPGs.
>Neon and her Fusion Born Sentinels
This sounds like /mu/ cancer.
This game sounds like Hot Topic cancer.
Ryder Rogers
Opinion noted. I appreciate the feedback. A very respectable question. This game revolves around a traditional attribute system, although dice rolling revolves around D6's exclusively. While this sounds limiting, it is liberating. Also, the chances of critical successes are much more common and in a game like this feels much more realistic.
In this game, creativity and flavor are near unlimited. In short, what other game can you play as a magical card slinging cat girl, that can also summon a skeletal sniper and a slush golem to help her out in combat? Can you flavor your armor in any other game to make it look however you want it to, such as describing your plate mail to take the appearance of gothic feathered armor? Lastly, what roleplaying game offers all this, and includes an equipment generator capable of creating over 10,000 weapons and armors? These would be some selling point.
Your feedback about the lack of mentioning dice mechanics was helpful, thank you.
Asher Howard
sounds fun but it sounds like there's going to be too much filler with so many races and classes. make sure everyone is fun and has a clear thing they can do.
Luke Kelly
Too many races. Too many classes. Too many traits. There will almost certainly be only-slightly different items, clear winners in those apples-to-apples choices, some totally useless cruft and some unforseen game breakers.
>Post apoc >Dystopian Each tells me very little about what I need to know about your games tone, content, and milieu. >Steampunk Not my thing, and same problem as above.
>neon >fusion born sentinels >super mutants Don't mean anything to me yet.
>be weird mixes of shit Why are there classes. To what end do I do any of these things?
>sample content, plus guidelines for custom shit Sensible.
Still not really clear on your selling point.
Lincoln Carter
>If a new Role Playing game was getting ready to come out, promised 12 playable races, 40 classes with a primary/subclass system, and an emphasize on creativity, would you be interested? I am neither interested nor uninterested.
>post-apocalyptic, early steampunk and dystopian future >Neon and her Fusion Born Sentinels >super mutants and yet... >Paladin of glaciers and also... >half-elf half-felion that can summon animal companions as a Druid, but still relies on her bladed guitar as a Bard What in the wide, wide world of sports is going on here?
>ready to use fantasy board game Wait... it's a board game?
Tyler Richardson
When the game is done and polished, yes. Unfortunately, that would essentially be releasing the game.
Sebastian Price
This sounds like it will be a game that people cannibalize as a splatbook for other games and never ever play it
Benjamin Murphy
Sounds like "I only ever played d20, so here's my "improved" take on it" garbage.
Dominic Cook
None of that sounds particularly novel. There are already pointbuy systems where you can make virtually anything, and you're promising so much variety it almost feels like the setting lacks any real identity in and of itself.
David Perry
So why wouldn't I just play homebrew dnd?
What does the system play like? Do I flip coins in combat or roll dice or just talk about it?
Very vague. It doesnt tell me what makes your game unique to anything else out there.
Jason Kelly
Releasing rules previews for playtesting and analysis is important. Sitting on the rules until after release just means you won't have a chance to fix any problems.
Andrew Roberts
Early steampunk, a world where guns are new and exciting, but swords are still stable and reliable.
Role Playing game that comes with a board. Ready to use out of the box for newer players. However, includes rules that allow you to play without a board (like any other Role Playing Game for veterans.)
Dominic Bell
GRUPS for starters, and pretty much any GM could add all these elements in the systems they roll. Looks are one thing, function and attributes another.
Honestly, it looks on one part too simple in using only d6 but overconvoluted with all the races and classes and subclasses and massive equipments.
I think you would ought to pick just one: either simple, or complex, and stick to one.
Ryder Rogers
Ok, I can't really work with what we know right now to give an opinion. It might be a good game, it might be a bad game, nobody knows.
It sounds like a game made by a hyper 16 year old who put in all stuff that sounds cool, but then again, it might actually work.
Good luck, I guess. Never enough games in the world.
Xavier Cook
What are the core mechanics for task and conflict resolution, and how do the 200+ options effect them? What is the expected play time? Options for campaigns of linked games?
What games have you played that you enjoyed and drew inspiration from? What did you play that problems you want to avoid?
The setting sounds like you just took a bunch of tropes nerds like and jammed them together, but its a boardgame so aesthetics over depth is pretty normal.
>kickstarter hype pitch/10
Brandon Robinson
I'm interested in the primary/subclass system, but you haven't told me much about the game itself.
Personally I have an aversion to post apocalyptic games and am completely neutral on steampunk. But that is a personal preference so I can withhold it from the rest of the game.
You mentioned many staple dnd classes and feats, so I am wondering what tools does your game offer the GM? Does it have encounter designing features?
Jeremiah Rogers
You do know mist of us will just pirate your game right? Why should Veeky Forums's opinions be if any value?
Asher Fisher
Hey OP, answer this question:
Ian Price
Very useful feedback, thank you! Certainly does have a hot topic feel to it I guess, not dodging that one. Hard to prove classes are balanced, I completely understand. After 5 years of play testing and using a strict ability and feature crafting formula, they have proven to be so far. Sensible, and hard for any new roleplaying game not to sound like that. Am I wrong? Interesting viewpoint. Again, very helpful with lack of mentioning dice mechanic. It is a simple D6 based system. It has many different mechanics, for instance: Instead of "Attack enemy A" you "Attack enemy A's Head, Upper Body, or Lower Body." Doing so inflicts wounds causing various detrimental effects. The game has many mechanics like this, but not something I'm sure I could fit into a sales pitch. Maybe I'll have to.
Brandon Carter
Go pay for an ad, shill. Also your game sounds generic as hell, why would anyone want to play it?
Christian Smith
What makes the setting different from other generic post apocalypse strampunk shot?
What makes the races different, or are they basically just elves, dwarfs, and other generic humanoid races with different names?
What makes the classes different?
It all honestly sounds very generic. You need to let us be drawn into the fluff, and it needs to be good fluff. Any one can put a spray of paint over the hunger games or some shit and add an orc.
Aiden Ross
How old are you?
Evan Gomez
got a playtest or more info? Im INTRIGUED but the back of my head says that the system sounds complicated
Lincoln Price
Serious question. How old are you OP? I hope you are a young 20-something like myself. There are too many middle-aged RPG designers in the hobby. Too many old people in general actually. They are out of touch and have old-mab preferences and inspirations.
Parker Taylor
>Meaningless buzzwords >Story elements referencing things we don't and can't know about yet >Character concepts are lul randumb bullshit that aren't all that creative >Class system in a game where you presumably don't want to be constrained by class because muh creativity >too many goddamn options. 200 traits, fucking really? >References to mechanics we don't and can't know about yet. >Purports to be gritty, but an encouraged character concept is a frosty holy warrior hacker and an elf babe with an axe guitar.
Jason Long
Over hundreds of games on Steam if we're talking video games. Dungeons and Dragons 3.5-5.0, World of Darkness, Warhammer the roleplaying game, and dabbled with Exalted/Heroes System. Opinions and feedback are always valuable. A 38 page booklet will be included to help the GM run a sample campaign. It also includes a monster creator, ability creator (for monsters), and an NPC creator. After that, the rest of the book offers guidance on being a GM for both newer and veteran players. While 38 pages seems small, it's quite enough for a game revolving around a D6 system. think D&D, but smaller numbers and D6 only.
Cameron Howard
>40 classes with a primary/subclass Why wouldn't you just have a classless system at the point?
Hunter Robinson
I smell underage. This reeks of that phase a lot of us went through when we wanted to make our own games, and it just ended up as "the system we like but with a few tiny differences." Also, if you're gonna make a sales pitch, why omit things that make it different from just another DnD clone? Although I'm not sure if your limb system is terrible or not, I'd need more info.
Adam Robinson
You're wrong. Its okay though. It sounds like you're just smart enough to sell a clusterfuck of cliches to neets.
Zachary Gomez
>Sensible, and hard for any new roleplaying game not to sound like that. Am I wrong? Yes, you're wrong. It's easy to do a pitch without sounding like a naive kid, and not actually tell anything substantial.
Matthew Taylor
In response to the 200+ traits thing. Does sound rather ridiculous huh? However, during character creation they never seemed to be that big of a deal. Must sound crazier than it actually is. Consider that taken out of the pitch, and your feedback genuinely helpful! 20-something
Jason Powell
This. Why do you have classes in your game?
Justin Martinez
>Consider that taken out of the pitch, and your feedback genuinely helpful!
This perky asshole is pissing me off, it's so clear that none of the criticism is actually getting through the layer of smugness cushioning his brain.
Julian Clark
Remember that just because you know the system from top to bottom, you need to look at the game from a complete newbie as well.
200 options of traits do seem to be plenty.
If we were talking D&D, it would be the core book, plus all the supplements.
Can the GMs effectivly track all these traits for their campaign?
Parker Rodriguez
Noted. Noted again! Perhaps I am being too restrictive with rules and too overbearing with character creation. Certainly an interesting perspective on what is important to people online as opposed to real life. You mention character creation to players in real life and they jump right past the rulebook and into the character creation book. Glad to know not everyone is like this. Great feedback.
Nathaniel Morgan
>Consider that taken out of the pitch Having that many classes and races and traits should be a selling point. If it's something you'll hide, why bother having it?
'm actually curious to see a full list of each, surely you can share that much?
David Martin
>40 classes
Sounds awful, no thanks.
>Steampunk postapoc
Kill me now. There is zero chance a game like this will get my dollars.
Angel Butler
Believe it or not, more people had complaints about that. In my play testing, players wanted to feel unique and know what each other's characters could do at first glance. Any idea what Jacob can do? What about Jacob the High Priest/Pyromancer?
This of course has been my personal experience.
Carter Fisher

Michael Cox
Veeky Forums is interested in the setting and the game mechanics. You aren't showing us either.
The one thing you have mentioned are minor details, surface level details about the game and setting. Unless you post a playtest document or some detailed description of the setting you are wasting your time.
The sales pitch should be the last thing you design, not the first.
Cooper Collins
>20-something Then act like it.
Bentley Moore
I'm curious if it's high or low twenties and why he'd hide either
Jose Davis
>"great feedback" >ignores all feedback Why even make this thread if you're gonna be like that?
Nolan Smith
Just trying to stay positive. Believe me, I am listening, and I've dealt with so much criticism in my life working retail, and trying to create a game I don't let it drain me anymore. These traits aren't necessary for the GM to know. Hero Players write them down on one of the many Talent Cards provided with the game. They are as simple as straight attribute bonuses, or as complex as (use X amount of points you're allotted per day to repair this mechanical device, or add 1D6 Spell damage to your attack, sort of thing.) Why not. But only classes. Berserker / Monk / Night Lasher / Ninja / Samurai / Soldier / Tempest / Warrior / Werebeast / Guardian / Law Knight / Paladin / Warden / Acidomancer / Azure Battlemage / Geomancer / Hydromancer / Invoker / Pyromancer / Sorcerer / Tinker / Alchemist / Astrologist / Bard / Battle Brother / Captain / Conjurer / Enchanter / High Priest / Low Priest / Thief / Ballista / Decimator / Deck Master / Gunner / Hunter / Druid / Engineer / Jester / Necromancer
Angel Johnson
Then let players give characters titles, you idiot. Or just say "this is Jacob, he can do magic" or "he dresses like a wizard". That's the dumbest reason I've ever heard for having classes.
Levi Thompson
OP wants to make an MMO but lacks any of the skills required to do more than write ideas down.

>In this game, creativity and flavor are near unlimited. What's the point of classes then?
>In short, what other game can you play as a magical card slinging cat girl, that can also summon a skeletal sniper and a slush golem to help her out in combat? GURPS.
>Can you flavor your armor in any other game to make it look however you want it to, such as describing your plate mail to take the appearance of gothic feathered armor? FATE, though strictly speaking I can do this in any system.
>Lastly, what roleplaying game offers all this, and includes an equipment generator capable of creating over 10,000 weapons and armors? But do I need 10,000 weapons? Everyone's going to do one of two things: 1. Choose something that fits their concept, and you do not need that many for that. 2. Just pick the best one.
Same with traits, really. You have almost as many traits as basic set GURPS has advantages, and that game is meant to be totally universal.
Landon Campbell
Either really, really early and he's still mentally a teenager, or a high functioning autist in his late twenties.
Ryan Cooper
Ok, so does the GM is in the dark on some of these attributes, then? I can see potential here for cheating.
Charles Barnes
I realize that, overall, the pitch is bad. Needs to have mechanics explained in the pitch. Also, needs to sound less like a hot topic sales pitch. Needs to not sound like a shit D&D knockoff. Sounds like a clusterfuck of bad ideas thrown together to try to make a good one. I realize this now, thanks to your help. That's why I came here. People in real life are less honest than on the internet. In real life, everyone has positive things to say, though they also get drawn into it by pretty artwork.
Juan Powell
Can do.
Grayson Lewis
You're not being positive, you're being over confident. Every time someone tries to explain what you're doing wrong, you just brush it off. That's gonna bite you in the ass in the long run.
Jace Carter
>pretty artwork Oooh, do show us some
Julian Davis
So far we have only graded your sales pitch.
We still know very little about the game itself.
Next time you post this thread try showing a playtest pdf or a writeup on the setting.
Juan Ross
Mans, I think you got some stuff out of that, but also it depends on your target market. Veeky Forums isn't that many people or that good a sample. Most consumers are going to want a low commitment, easily digestible clusterfuck with tits, ninjas and cogs. Sounds like you've pretty much got it.
Carson Nelson
Did your boss or whoever tell you to talk to us? This weird, hyperpolite tone you've put on really makes me think that you're trying to sell us this system rather then be here for actual advice. It's honestly making me trust you less.
If you want real help, try to be more open, and be more honest. We don't want to accommodate salesmen.
Jacob Jones
Yes and no, as with many systems. However, it's not like the GM can't just read the Talent Card they filled out, it's really not too bad in person. There aren't any hidden attributes, just options. The equipment generator is random, not determined. Obviously that could cause some crazy builds.
Jose Miller
The hell is a "Night Lasher"? Why divide priests into high and low? What's the difference between a "Law Knight" and a Paladin? Or a Soldier and Warrior?
Justin Wood
I really STRONGLY feel that trying to allow a lot of creativity and having classes can't be possible in the same system
many people have already mentioned GURPS
Also if I want my armor to look a certain way, Ill describe it however I please honestly Im sorry man Im just failing to see your argument
If you have anything physical or concrete to show us we could give you more relevant feedback
Ryan Martin
Talent cards sound cool, can you tell us more about that?
Jose Brooks
Quality over quantity. I don't want 40 classes and 200 traits, I want to see 5 well designed classes and 10 mechanically interesting traits with a promise that you can scale up.
If it's all number juggling, then you might be better off with a digital game to handle all that number bloat.
Lucas Gutierrez
That reminds me of PTU, what with the mix and match classes. As a small explanation if you haven't read it, the game has a whole lot of classes which are basically small feat trees around a theme, and each players pick 2 to 4 classes plus some free feats from a bunch of others if they want. The game is generally considered overcomplicated, although I think that's because each pokemon has their own character sheet, which means a lot of sheets.
I'd be personally on the fence, the whole lot of classes is something that I find appealing, but you'd need to make them all different for it to work, and yoy risk breaking something ala 3.5 if there's too much.
I'm also not interested by the setting prompt, it sounds like a mish mash of what is popular right now, regardless of if it works. It also seems like you're looking for critics because it's the thing to do and not because you want to, or because you're not entirely sure what's the next step to do once the game is ready (like how to get it out in store).
Anyway, I'm cautiously interested, if you have more info please dump them (maybe an example of 2-3 classes?)
Asher Perry
>Dungeons and Dragons 3.5-5.0, World of Darkness, Warhammer the roleplaying game, and dabbled with Exalted/Heroes System.
Is this a joke?
Logan Jackson
Not OP but there is nothing wrong with classes. They work fine in a game with a specific setting. Yeah sorry you can't tweak out a special snowflake that is actually from an anime, just play one of the goddamn classes you fucking prick. Thank god for class-based games, they force fuckers like you to actually conform to the setting somewhat.
Samuel Morris
Still didn't answer his question about why you'd have classes in a game that you're pretending would be all about possibilities and creative character building. Seriously, just consider that question for three seconds, you clearly haven't done that.
David Allen
This.
Plus, if you're going to have weird classes, why not make them all weird? It may just be me, but I won't want to play as a "guy who sings good" when I can play "guy with eye tentacles" or whatever.
Benjamin Watson
"low commitment, easily digestible clusterfuck with tits, ninjas and cogs." Great way of wording that haha, and yes, that has been my biggest appeal. This board of course isn't my target market, but I like to get feedback from all realms.
I did get a lot out of it. This place has the most brutally honest people in the world, and sometimes we all need to hear it.
Cooper Ward
so players don't choose equipment? You're taking away player agency and still tauting a hyper customizable system
wut
Bentley Johnson
OP the game you are trying to make is dungeon world
It's pretty much objectively one of the best currently out there. It has fast easy to use mechsnics and is perfect for beginners, it's a lot cheaper than most of these other rules bloated systems that cost fifty dollars. There is no reason for extra rules when it is he role playing that matters. Dungeon World is fast and innovative and still feels exactly like the spirit of ADND before DnD 3.5 destroyed the hobby and ruined a generation of role players.
You want fast, intuitive combat? Dungeon World does that.
You want real, deep roleplaying mechanics? Dungeon World does that.
You want great mechanics that reward diversity of play? Dungeon World does that as well.
My last session of Dungeon World my human fighter wrapped a vampire in a bear hug and wrestled him out a window. This is real roleplaying we are talking about here, not babby 3.5 shit. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Dungeon World today, it is an evolution and perfection of the half-formed ideas in Apocalypse World (the game it is derived from)
Brody Wilson
>Game with a hard set class system You lost my interest there
Brandon Gutierrez
Nah brah, that's two more games than a lot of people who play table top have even heard of. Veeky Forums isn't the gaming community demographic.
Joshua Cooper
You've looked at three game systems with outright bad mechanics and one with dull mechanics, and a lot of computer games, and you think you've got a balanced game?
You are almost certainly flat wrong.
Cameron Evans
>hard for any new roleplaying game not to sound like that Not really.
Or, just do as when I play GURPS: >"Hey user, what's your character about?" >"He rides a horse and shoots a gun" >"Okay"
Alternatively: >"Hey user, what's your character concept?" >"Cowboy" >"Okay"
What's a Night Lasher? What's a Tempest? What's the difference between a "Law Knight" (bad name) and a Paladin? What's an Azure Battlemage? Why are some Priests lanklets and some Priests manlets? What's a Decimator?
>The equipment generator is random Really? Is this game called Realms of Atlantasia 2.0?
Explain this mechanic to me, in broad strokes. Are characters just dumped with completely random gear?
Samuel Kelly
>10,000 weapons and armors? Nobody will ever need that many. And pretty much every single fucking system lets you easily creative the kind of personal gear you want, by simply having the player say "my sword looks like this". Why do you have to make everything so cumbersome and awkward?
Noah Bell
You can explain the basic mechanics without telling us the whole rule system, you mouthbreather. This is ridiculous.
Robert Watson
Very hard to respond to everybody, holy cow. Ok let me look at this. Classes offer free abilities to get you started. After that, you are free to build as you choose. Most people feel comfortable that, in a party full of different characters, there's at least some sort of anchor. Classes are sectioned off into melee fighter, ranged fighter, mage, support, defender, and summoner. Typically, a team full of mage classes would not do terribly well. Jacob the firecaster, Sam the Illusionist, Tim the Soveriegn, and Jack the swashbuckler are great custom titles, but do they really tell you if your team is well rounded or not?
Lincoln Davis
>game recognize game good luck fleecing scrubs
Ayden Clark
What is the board for?
Owen Gutierrez
Most of the people here are going to see that, in blunt terms, as "Mormon garbage". The Big Bang Theory of RPGs. The Funko Pop of RPGs. The 12th Doctor of RPGs. The Taylor Swift of RPGs. Pop culture shlock, is what I'm saying. Don't try to build a good setting if off "wackiness" and pop culture references, if you can. If it's just kind if dumb, then alright; but don't try to appeal to any lowest common denominators.
William Jenkins
LOL fantasy heartbreaker cringe: the thread.
Thanks for the laughs, OP.
Ryder Torres
ITT: a noob game designer gets torn to pieces by other noobs who only kind of know what they're talking about.
Henry Williams
Again, classes aren't needed for that, you can easily just have traits. And I can tell if my group is rounded or not, because I'm capable of looking at the stats and get an idea if what the character is good as. Why is this so hard for you to comprehend?
Luis Price
Guys he's doing free market research. The game isn't for us, its for larger demographics with more of an interest in spending their disposable income on pop culture scholck.
We're a different kind of lowest common denominator, they're not trying to appeal to gaming hipsters. It might even be a good thing for games trying to be popular if we don't like it.
Alexander Bell
With a nice dose of "I want advice, but I won't listen to any of it".
Lincoln Martin
>Jacob the firecaster, Sam the Illusionist, Tim the Soveriegn, and Jack the swashbuckler are great custom titles, but do they really tell you if your team is well rounded or not?
Jacob the Pyromancer, Sam the Jester, Tim the Captain and Jack the Night Lasher is so much more obviously a balanced party, right?
Dylan Lee
OP please, I feel like I need to see ACTUAL rules and relevant lore to even properly digest this
so pony up, you went this far might as well show us the fruits of your labor
Jayden Flores
Eeeehh, I've found that for all the shitheads and trolls on Veeky Forums, Veeky Forums has a pretty good sense of what's shit and what isn't. Not 100% infallible, but better than most.
