Imagine if the art style actually matched the cinematics. Wouldn't that be great?
Imagine if the art style actually matched the cinematics. Wouldn't that be great?
It would, but it would also melt graphics cards.
Not what I meant. Can match the style but not have the same fidelity.
It does. Seriously, go look at the models:

TOO CARTOONYYYY, PLASTICKYYY, BAZZ BRLLDNGGG RRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
...
Ork vid too
youtube.com
I really like some of the animations, especially the deff dreads
Ugly as fuck, especially Eldars.
Veeky Forumss macha is much cuter. Also seems to be three steps in the wrong direction
Great. I read it in his new voice and the old one too.
To be fair, Kyras kind of punched most of it off.
Completely unrelated, but does anyone know if Eldar are all strictly fair skinned? Not SJW just wondering
So far it seems like yes. I don't think there's ever even been an Asian-y looking one.
Though, to be fair, the Imperium of Man is generally white unless stated otherwise in most stuff too. So there could be worlds of different skin colored Eldar. I guess the genetic bottleneck of the fall might have wiped them all out though.
>/v/ in a nutshell.
considering the race was originally a genetically engineered race, yes, even the crazy shit DE
That's angelos? Damn, the guy took some beating through the series. Compare him now and him when DOW1 just started.
I see Angelos got gifted a Tartaros suit.
>implying it's not truth
I know this is bullshit, but when they are going to make Eldar look fluff-wise?
On the other hand, 60 million years of evolution (could) have happened to the Eldar. So if you want to have Eldar with a different skin colour, there's not much to stop you.
Man that game looks like dog shit. Hypetrain = derailed
I seem to recall there being indications that the Eldar have not changed since the old days. There's a bit with some magos studying an Eldar corpse and comparing it to old fossils believed to be of Eldar origin, and being amazed how similar they are even after all those millions of years.
Eldar didn't evolve, they were created for a purpose. So it wouldn't make sense for them to have DNA prone to mutations. As I remember, it's said somewhere their DNA is self-repairing, so it resists changes.
So the cutscenes aren't animated anymore?
I mean, the art is gorgeous and all, it's just weird to see a AAA game with no animated cutscenes is all
>DoW
>AAA
Well that sounds like some GW science.
In the end it's still your dudes, and a different skin colour than your average joe Eldar wouldn't be a problem. Except for some massive sperglords.
I loved the video, and the game is looking great, but most discussion, like the comments section or any /v/ thread fucking infuriates me. I don't understand why people keep fucking saying it looks like star craft, it's dawn of war, it looks like the fucking original and seems as though it'll play mostly like it. Goddamn.
You'd think he'd get another cybernetic eye instead of being a cyclops.
He wants to emulate his favourite primarch
True that. I was trying to paint up some dark skinned eldar but it just didn't look good. Their slender features just looked exclusively fair skinned.
But I suppose if you wanted a dark skinned race, copper or brown color would look more natural to them. I think if they wanted to genetically alter their skin, maybe coal black skin could also work
They're basically elves, otherwise known as "the fair folk". Read a book nigger.
>They're basically elves, otherwise known as "the fair folk". Read a book nigger.
Ok. But they're not. If they were elves, they'd be called elves, and "fair folk". Read a book, dumb nigger.
/v/ has turned from a shithole into a quarantine zone. There was literally a trap thread up for 70 posts until someone started posting child porn. Everyone there just shitposts instead of actually discussing games.
Too bad Veeky Forums isn't as fast.
Why are they doing this shit?
>him when DOW1 just started
Although it's quite old by now, the Index Xenos article on Dark Eldar said this:
>The Eldar have almost translucent, pale skin as a racial characteristic. In the case of the Eldar Kabalite, this facet of their physiognomy seems to be exaggerated even more than in their Craftworld-dwelling brethren. Many have skin that is almost alabaster white, although others have been reported with sallow complexions ranging from puce to sickly green-grey.
There's also Mandrakes, but that's cheating.
The corpse-fossil comparison is from an Explorator report in Xenology, which was written in the Oldcron era and as such was heavy on "X, Y, and Z race were all created to fight Necrons gorillions of years ago".
I hate these proportions.
They just brought them closer to the models
You mean removing the cybernetic scope/eye thing? Yeah can't understand that too. I mean afaik, if you lost your eye, you still can't let the socket empty & have to stuff it anyway.
The word "Eldar" was created by Tolkien but the pointy eared race in his books are still Elves.
The Autarch at 5:37 looks exactly like Kayleth, has she been mentioned as a returning character?
Looks like a dude to me but what the fuck do I know? Sega's DoW is Overwatch models and Warlords of Draenor environments.
It's pretty spot on in terms of hairline, hair colour/style and general shape of face, but Eldar are androgynous enough that I can see why it looks like a man too.
Seeing as it's an Autarch with Swooping Hawk wings too, there seem to be a lotta coincidences. Only major difference I can see is the lack of her previous forehead tattoo. Considering that they said in the video that they wanted to make the game about characters and they've already brought back almost a half dozen established characters, it wouldn't surprise me if they brought her back too.
>that plastic fucking look on all the models
>all of them look like brand new factory-shipped miniatures instead of actual battle-worn machines with scraped metal etc.
Nah man, that shit gross
Was about to say the same thing. And then you have silly animations of prancing marines and terminators, sad face.
>tons of amazing things happen in cinematics
>killakanz get destroyed
since when was a killakan getting destroyed amazing? they are like AV10 walkers of course they get destroyed.
I blame the light effects being too obtrusive
she looks like shit, they fucked up her hair.
New art director sucks ass, what happened to the original one? I know it was a chinese guy.
yeah a cybernetic eye made complete sense.
oh well now, now THAT is a good easter egg.
they changed art directors, the original one shaped the entirety of DOW the new one its a fucking scrub.
>I seem to recall there being indications that the Eldar have not changed since the old days.
If you take Xenology as canon, the book specifically mentions that neither the Eldar nor Humanity have evolved (abhuman adaptions aside) in thousands and thousands of years. It's used to imply that there might have been some genetic tampering with humanity, as the Eldar are an artificially created species and both now seem fixed in their current forms.
As for the trailer, the Eldar look great, but what the hell did they do to Gorgutz? No Mega-Armour? Did he get that oversized arm from a Gorkanaut or something?
the new art designer sucks ass dude.
>If you take Xenology as canon
The xenology is canon, idiota, the issue is that the information in it is written by a in-verse insane character so people think that makes it unreliable.
>xenology is canon
And I agree with that, but the oddities and errors - like the Tau feet - mean a lot of people shit on the book as soon as you bring it up in a discussion and discount it outright. Hence the disclaimer.
>Gorgutz doesn't seem to have his original VA back
They are turning DoW3 heroes into Moba-esque abominations. I'm afraid that Gorgutz is going to be like pudge or blitzcrank, judging by his art.
fuck.... cat's out of the bag.
The game director completely fucked this up.
Also the devs have admitted to play DOTA 2 a lot.
If you apply at relic to work for dow 3 they ask you how much experience you have on mobas.
fucking ass holes.
RTS just doesn't have a big audience any more
But MOBAs do and they're still pretty close
You'd think that people would look around and see the MASSIVE graveyard of dead MOBA games. It's almost as big as the graveyard of dead MMORPGs at this point. All of these studios keep thinking that they can make the next DOTA killer "everyone has been waiting for". Just like how people thought they could kill World of Warcraft.
Not an excuse to turn a DoWIII game into Moba. People would have way less problems with it, if it was a whole new game with different name, not a cash-in on older games.
Did he just called Gorgutz, a "chieftain"?...
what the actual fuck. piece of shit should've just said Warboss.
also weird that Gabe doesn't have his bionic eye like at the end of DoW2
Why is that guy wearing Cataphractii still?
I have no interest in DoW 3.
To me, the gameplay looks completely unappealing, with the even greater focus on heroes and "elite" units, with abilities that seem to be ripped out from moba style games, while the "line units" (term the devs use to describe your regular troops) seem to be simplified to the point where you just spam them and march them to die in the front lines, while you focus on microing your hero and elite units.
If you look at the gameplay videos that have been revealed, the combat just boils down to two groups of units standing still and firing at each other, while a couple of speshul super elite units and heroes spam their flashy abilities. That looks completely fucking dull to me.
The fact that they also scrapped the dynamic cover system of DoW 2 pisses me off, because that made actual positioning of your units very important, encouraged flanking, repositioning, and in general, kept the fights dynamic.
The combat of DoW 2 was pretty much flawless imo, outside of the retreat button, which was crap. I loved the way each of your units was powerful and important, even the lowly guardians of the eldar, could have utility all the way to the end game, and in fact, were one of the best general purpose units in the whole game when used well. Thus the direction of having "line units" that you just spam to work as meatshields for your heroes, as the direction of DoW 3 seems to indicate, doesn't appeal to me at all.
As it is, there is no gameplay reason for me to ever be interested in DoW 3.
If I want big armies, I can play DoW 1 and it's various mods that bring the game to apoc scale, and if I want smaller scale tactical combat, I can play DoW 2. DoW 3 just doesn't have anything in it that appeals to me.
Also, DOW 3's aesthetics are shit, and the removal of sync kills is bullshit.
Are you all really that retarded? Since when do MOBAs let you build bases and multiple units to control and have no NPC creeps or towers? OR multiple maps and a single player campaign?
It's an RTS with skillshots. You don't micro single units in this like in StarCraft, but DoW was never about that. So they added a layer of micro in skillshots, to not make the game as overly simply as Grey Goo.
Art direction can be applied to any genre, be it MOBA, RTS, A point and click adventure, anything.
The basic controls, view and interface are the same
Hell the first moba WAS an RTS mod
Codex says they have skin like "polished marble".
So... we meet again.
I already responded on one of your points here but I'll keep going on another
>The fact that they also scrapped the dynamic cover system of DoW 2 pisses me off
I can understand that because that cover system was cool indeed, but there is no way to make it work on that scale. It would also induce a lot more micro for little to no gain. I don't like the shield bubble, but DoW 2's covers wouldn't work either.
This. It's super disappointing how little personality and utility the mainline units seem to have. All the game design chat is dominated by talk of elites and heroes when 40k isn't about that, it's about wars on a scale where individualism doesn't matter. They've upped the scale only to streamline the gameplay with your characters being babysitters to lemming troops.
>explaining things to normie
>any normies actually watching the video
>they absolutely are funny when you're outside the setting, but
his opinion on orks is pretty spot on
I don't know if I'll actually like DoW3, though.
this, they rly need to take their heads out of ass and come to realize they not gonna sway MOBA/SC2 crowd.
I like their trailer artstyles, especialy that writhebone Banshe armour, in game visuals look like clusterfuck of epilepsy and rave.
I haven't paid any attention to the ingame stuff, but who ever is in charge of the concepts and trailers is doing a super cool job.
Who is this guy? I would say Angelos, but he doesn't have the Terminator armor he now wears. The red of his armor seems a bit off too.
it's angelos
concept art don't have to make narrative sense
I like the paper windmills by the pauldron and chainsword.
Those are animation controllers most likely. They tend to look like that.
Do you even Odin, bro? Shit, do you even Magnus?
Because heaven forbid we borrow elements from another gaming genre. We all know that's never worked before. I mean, can you imagine if someone did something like combine elements of a MOBA with a shooter? Christ, that would just be the worst. There's no way it would ever work.
I can't say I've had much fun with that, so yeah I'd think that's fair reason to be wary of MOBAs infecting another genre I like.
Dawn of war fans get promised with base building and think we are getting DoW1 with cover system from DoW2. Instead we are (probably) getting an abomination of combining SC2 and Moba.
Also the very act that you are defending Gorgutz with that weird powerclaw is offending to any 40k lore fan. Ork powerclaws don't work like this, and while orks can do all the whacky shit you can imagine, thats does not mean that you take an iconic race weapon and modify it to fit your desire to copypaste pudge or blitzcrank or whatever. This is just lore disrespect from developer.
It would be impossible to use DoW II cover system with DoW I scale. See It's a shooty-klaw. If that's not Orky I don't know what is. I think most Ork players would like to use something like this in TT - something to force melee frim a distance
OW is smaler in scale and FPS.
Second OW have no PVE so you need team and tryhard to achive anything, RTS on the other can be laidback game after work.
Third I played OW for a week or 2, I still have DOW instaled and play it from time to time. That game dont age.
The thing is, if it was introduced in book or TT first as a "Kustom Rokit Klaw" it woudnt stick out so much.
Point is this looks like peons with heroes MOBA on top of christmass tree not a RTS DoW.
>It's a shooty-klaw. If that's not Orky I don't know what is.
Yeah, it let's him make runny gitz GIT UVVA 'ERE
I 100% agree with arguments on DoWII cover system beeing impossible on bigger scale. But thats what people were expecting.
It kinda works wonky in DoWII itself, especially imperial guard is prone to problems with it, since cover were designed for 4-5 models tops. Still, even DoW1 cover system was better than some bubble cover garbage we are getting.
>a shooty-klaw
Well, yeah, sounds orky but execution is lame (Gorgutz does not even have a pistol in his free hand!) Also the fact that we've never seen weapons like this in lore makes it look weak.
DoW1 was pure innovation. DoW2 was based on CoH, also innovative RTS. DoW3 looks like degradation compared to previous titles that brings nothing new and just tries to surf the tide of Moba popularity.
Those stick-thin thighs...
Fuck off, MOBA's are fucking shit and should fucking die off already.
At least the modern realistic shooter rage has finally died off, so I can just abandon all "strategy" games for 10 years and play Quake-ian arena shooters instead.
ITS NOT DOW ITS NOT DOW REE
This is what you fucking autists sound like
It IS Dow. That's the problem. You fucktards howled and bitched for years after DoW2 about muh basebuilding muh original gameplay
So now you got what you wanted, sans synch kills because it was a good idea but a bad mechanic
And just like every d&d player ever it turns out you didn't know what you actually wanted and now your salty because you were given your request and it isn't actually as good as you expected
I hope you all choke on your salty bitch tears
T. A DoW 2 fag
>DoW1 was pure innovation.
Fuck off.
DoW1 was "generic RTS with 40k flavour".
DoW2 was innovative.
>sans synch kills
not muh fuckin DoW
Point of order, dow1 had hero units too
Every Dow game has been a ripoff of another game with slight changes and gimmicks.
DoW was Warcraft 3
DoW2 was company of heroes
DoW3 is gonna be StarCraft 2
I don't see where the mobs bullshit complaint is.coming from. Heroes are probably prominent because 1. Warhammer 40k absolutely is about heroes and anyone else who says different needs to read a fucking book or even play a game of TT
And 2. They're taking fan feedback from DoW2 and last stand mode was a huge fan favorite
How can DoW2 be a ripoff of CoH when it was made by the same company?
>DoW was Warcraft 3
what
Have you never played dawn of war or warfcraft 3?
Synch kills were always a cool idea but a bad mechanic. Anything that takes control away from the player in an RTS is a bad idea unless it's on the context of a specific CC ability.
They would work better with something like Total War, where slower unit reaction is part of the gameplay
Blame the fucking Koreans and the APM meta narrative
Shit feels too clean.
DoW was never the best, or even decently balanced, RTS out there but it made up for it by playing to the strengths of the IP and having tons of personality.
There seems to be lacking a distinct "visceralness" from all of the footage shown so far.
DoW 1's visceralness came from the semi-large scope of it's combat with battles being a mess of synchkills, corpses piling up at key chokepoints, and terrible terrible pathfinding.
DoW 2 dialed back on the scale but made the environment much more dynamic as husks of vehicles and craters dotted the landscape with units such as Terminators being able to radically reconstruct the environment by just walking through walls and cover.
The new direction doesn't seem to have that same degree of violence.
There's the corpses and the blood sure but they don't feel dynamic enough for whatever reason.
All of the MOBA/Starcraft complaints wouldn't really be a problem, or probably even exist, if the game didn't just look so damn sterile.
And no, flashy neon trails off of every animation is not an acceptable substitute for style.
Yeah, because "fuck off"-ing people will convince them that you are right. Anyway.
I like DoW2(actually I still play it unlike DoW1, Elite mod) , but claiming that DoW1 was not innovative is heretical.
- glorious synch kills
- melee units can tie up ranged units to prevent them from using ranged weaponry
- degrading req points that force you
But the sterility and lack of environmental effects is the entire reason why StarCraft is shit.
Just compare Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2 with StarCraft 1.
Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 had environmental dangers, neutral enemies that attacked everyone, civilians running around, trains smashing into any unit walking on train tracks, forest fires, bombardments causing craters, etc. Tiberian Sun even had fully collapsable terrain, bomb the enemy enough, and you could just turn their entire base in such a deep bomb crater, they wouldn't be able to rebuild their lost facilities.
StarCraft's environment was just a bunch of animated .gif tiles stuck together.
*...to fight all over the map
I think you got what bothers me the most.
I can accept a new design, but the feel of the game, the visceralness as you call it, is lacking right now.
Wondering what you guys think of pic related?
youtube.com
I was not hyped at all, but their last trailer showing a vast diversity of randomly-generated content (the exact opposite of Deathwing) got me intrigued. The fact that we could see a female Vindicare (I think) in the trailer instead of the butt-ugly powerarmored inquisitor got me.
Your opinion?
>Dawn of war fans get promised with base building
Which you're getting
>and think we are getting
Fans theorizing about the future of a game sequel is fine, but the devs aren't obligated to actually do what we're thinking we might get.
Because Orks are well known for their uniform weapons construction. The idea of an Ork who does something outside of the norm should be quite offensive. The idea that a named character would have a unique weapon is also completely unprecedented.
Cautiously excited. If they actually manage to pull this off, it would be amazing, but this sounds incredibly ambitious (and runs the risk of being too RNG like No Man's Sky).
