Yeah. That picture actually haunted me as a kid. I had the book of classic Russian fairytales (it was published under the name "Beauty beyond Measure" in my country) with Bilibin's illustrations, and this story and this image in particular always scared me shitless.

She was I think the only direct female heroine in Afanasyev'es stories, wasn't she?

Classical 19th century fairytale collections are generally fantastic materials. I always found it a shame that the works of some our (Czech) folklorists like Erben and Němcová were never properly translated into foreign languages.
Although, I don't think any country can really rival Russia with the quality of folklore collection illustrations. Perhaps maybe except Bauer.

Here's baba yaga and vasilisa as illustrated in that book. Shame the cottage didn't get a colored picture since the artwork is atleast ok.

Well, yeah. It's called "questioning someone's taste". It's actually a pretty normal thing to do among normal adult humans, who aren't so damn insecure to be unable to differentiate between one's individual taste and one's individual worth.
And I don't think anyone actually finds anything weird among questioning the taste of those who genuinely think Twilight or Fifty Shades of Grey are good books, or who think Danny DeVito's The Room is a good movie.
Why should this be actually any different?
