Shortswords get plenty of love in terms of usage, but longswords don't seem to be chosen as important weapons enough relative to fantasy fiction. I sometimes take the "+1 attack with longswords" trait for longsword-specialists.

There's actually quite a nice collection now.
The Gambler is probably one of the most open-ended of them, as it's effectively a 6th-level manifester with a theme on blasting and "random" chance.
The Onslaught Sniper from the new playtest is also great, as its whole schtick is "I shoot things dead with elemental shooting, other kineticists have utility but I shootshoot SHOOT THINGS DEAD".
Bard and Fighter are both actually good on a Cleric, the former for more face-abilities and the latter to get Weapon and Armor Training.

without dsp content how can i get good dpr numbers on a midlevel (5-9) melee character, in practical contexts where i don't get to stand next to a dummy and wank? it seems quite difficult to make multiple attacks compared to bow users.

The one type of appearance you can't do without a particular stat being high is Absolutely Ripped and Huge. If your strength is high you don't HAVE to go buff, but you might as well!

Dueling swords are identical to longswords, which are the best swords available to you for one-handing.

If you've got Scarlet Throne Style and one level in Landsknecht, you can treat the Aldori Dueling Sword as two-handed for strength bonuses, power attack, and class abilities.

In other words, it's not only a really cool looking sword, it's the best sword available to you if you want to be a one-handed dueling badass.

You don't need to spend a feat for the Aldori Dueling Sword, you only do that if you want it to work as a finesse weapon, otherwise it's functionally identical to a longsword.

Dueling Swords are martial, they can just be used with Weapon Finesse if you have EWP.

This isn't as bad as witchhunting.

Straight-up cannot be made to work. Pathfinder supports many concepts well but hordes of small weak summons will always be useless in it, unfortunately.
