I like High Elves the most when they are not only those "good at magic", but the descendants of the elves that had the once glorious past, which they still uphold as much as they can. Also in my opinion they display the purest elf aesthetic. Wood elves can be great if they aren't hippies. Dark Elves tend to be idiotic evil, don't really like them.

why can't elf threads ever go as much as decently?Well to answer your question op, i don't really like elves they always feltto me like that race which is just better at everything with no real interesting stuff going on for them.For this my least favourite are high elves,they so boring with their "we are the best" attitude and eventhough i know there is more to them than this in many settings, i can never bear to go over this.Dark elves are inbetween,i like that they make the bestest race bad in a way,but they are too often depicted as edge machines which i really don't like.Wood elves are of course my favourite fora couple of reasons, i like treemen,i like bow light infantry,they often have the most lighthearted lore without the impending doom or the constant evil and i also like having mobile shooty units on the battlefield or as my character so they fit mechanically too.

I like wood elves, generally speaking. They seem the least haughty and stick-up-the-ass out of the bunch, they live off the land and don't really have a whole lot of polish and gloss all over their society, and I feel like they're the most likely race to have actual respect for non-elves so long as the non-elf in question doesn't just cut down trees all day or some shit.

I wanna see a take on Dark Elves where they aren't edgy and emo, or subterranean, or even evil. Just... harsh. Used to living in much harsher environments and thus a hardier and *somewhat* curler/more practical than their cousins.

A race that stayed behind in their ancestral lands after the cataclysmic event that lead to the elves becoming a race on the decline, hence the harsher environment, but also can have that bit of pride and vanity in claiming they are the true descendants of the original eleven civilization.

I prefer them to be all of those, each stereotype simply represents different stages of elven society.

While not very sophisticated, wood elves are the more pragmatical, fierce and down to earth ones, people able to do the dirty job. Those represent the first stage of elf, tribes of savage warriors that nonetheless have the potential to become conquerors and empire builders.

High elves are the result and continuation of wood elf achievements. The Golden Age. Once the civilization has grown big and strong enough, it also becomes more advanced and sophisticated. Progress that was used for survival and expansion is now also at the service of culture. Yet at some point they grow so big they become arrogant, even gullible, and the population free of external threats becomes content.

If the situation doesn't bring the High Elves back to the Wood Elf stage, the natural next step is the Dark Elf. A spoiled and entitled society becomes morally corrupted. This stage often sees the survival of elf society against threatened, since it's weak again, and militarism and authoritarianism ensue. So does obscurantism and zealotry. The society becomes self-destructive and aggressive at the same time. Eventually this degenerate society will be destroyed by internal or external foes and go back to the wood elf stage, if they don't manage to return to the old glory days.

Of course, if you have different elf societies different stages can and will coexist. Also the stages often follow each other but there's no strict linearity or a determinated amount of time for each of them.

Everyone says dunmer, but I just see wood elves outside of the woods here.

I find the elves of Eberron interesting. The Dark elves are scorpion worshiping jungle people, the 'wood' elves are kinda cannibal desert dwellers and the high elves are ancestor worshiping necromancers.

They're sensible drow, basically. House-based society, chronic backstabbing disorder, love slavery and conquest, longstanding wizard traditions. But at the same time, they're also honorable (or can be) and are real actual people rather than walking stereotypes or "always evil alignment." They aren't nice, but they're worthy of respect... and are capable of respecting others.

Plus you have the ashlander angle. Ashlanders aren't better people than the House dunmer, and in many cases are worse people, but they're a separate culture within a fantasy race, which is almost unheard of in fantasy.

If a group is interfertile with another group, they're all part of the same species. They may be separate subspecies, though. But interfertility is key.

In most RPGs, this means that almost all of the playable races are part of the same species, even if there are many races within that species. Subraces, too, are still separate from each other, that's why they often have different rules. For example, Drow are a subrace that is mechanically separate from Wood elves. Elves as a whole are a race that is mechanically separate from humans. But they're still separate races.

Btw, in my setting, my not!driders are an entire race caused by a curse. (a bit like werewolves). I've been trying to land on a name for them similar to "the corrupted". What do you think of "the touched"? They're a bit insane too, so maybe?
