Honestly if you do go to a tournament in whw just dont say anything. I know the guys running events there and 99% of the time, even if your opponent kicks up an autistic stink theyll tell you just to play on. They dont care, its more about everyone having a good time rather than being pedantic about models.

Heres the thing, independent events dont care, and gw events are more about having a good time, so either way you can split them without worry.

For competitive high elves, bodies or bolt throwers?

I could get 30 archers and a Sea Helm for a little more than 3 Repeater Bolt Thowers.

The range and rend on the Repeaters seems huge, but having 3x the wounds and model count seems better in competitive play. Factoring the Sea Helm's ability, they can even do a decent Kunnin' Rukk imitation.

The castellan might be nice, but with your list at 920pts he is kinda awkward. I'd consider dropping him for a second Daemonsmith (one for Mystic Shield, one for Ash Storm) and using the now open 100pts for a second unit of fireglaives or K'daai Fireborne.
Or maybe even replace the Casellan for a Battle Standard and use the 120pts you gain from that for a second Death Shrieker.

You can fire in melee remember, but you indeed need close combat warrior to protect your artillery

You are painfully slow and practically any enemy can dictate the terms of engagement to you. If you don't have a way to build pressure and force the enemy to come to you, you are beyond fucked.

not him but shooting from 36" away that doesn't require line of sight.... if you get 5 in a corner of the table with a squad to protect the front its a cheap (only 600 points....nothing in a big 2k5 game) and can seriously rape asses and there is no way someone pop or deepstrike anywhere near your artillery, For smaller games its not that impressive tho
