Currently loving Halo Battle Fleets. If anyone knows a good source for techniques on painting space ships, I would appreciate it if you could post it.

3mm bits fit the drill, im using them as well for magnezizing. For bigger holes I use my power drill.

Nearly finished this guy now, just needs some highlights and tidying up.

Guys, I got a question, I picked up some very generic paint from Hobby Lobby, and it called "Model Color" acrylic colors
But at the bottom it says Vallejo. Do you guys know if these paints are really Vallejo paints? I don't think I've used "real" Vallejo paint, so are these the same brand?

Also it says on the bottle acrylic, are citadel/GW paints acrylic as well?

Pic related, it's one of the few that I found

Google would have answered you there, Model Colour is one of Vallejo's paint ranges (including Game Colours, Model Air, Game Air...)

Yes Citadel paints are acrylics, but not all acrylics are the same, so don't go buying cheap craft store stuff that's not intended for miniatures.

I've used these and as far as I can tell, they are identical to Vallejo's older bottles.

So I'm aiming to make a conversion based off one of my characters just for shits and giggles... the only problem is, I don't know exactly where to start and what kits I could use. Suggestions? Looking for kits in 40k or similar.

Pic Related, it's said character.

lol oh great...conflicting answers then... I bought a few colors to start with, and I noticed some a VERY watery right in the bottle. it seriously looks like someone thinned out the paint in the bottle. And others feel normal, like the GW range....

Are the watery "thinned" ones cheaper or would they actually save me a step in watering them down..?

That is Vallejo model paint.
Also, GW paints are acrylic. There are three types of common paint, water colour, oil and acrylic. Water colour is thick and diluted in water to change the saturation, oil is thick and requires chemicals to touch up as it does not bond with water. Acrylic is the simple, thin paint, that reacts with water.

this guy never ends

What do you think so far guys?

Yes, get the watery ones, but shake them a bit before use, as some particles I found, could settle at the bottom of the bottle.

i nutted a little bit. looks good nigga

Just check reaper and use sophie as tag.
It's not like there is a shortage of succubus/demon type characters.
Mantics gargoyle squad is also entirely composed of female models. Oddly enough the only male gargoyle they have is the character model.
They also an entire demon squad composed of succubi.

But yeah the only difference between succubi and gargoyle for your purposes here is the paintjob.
If it absolutely has to be GW then just use some of the dark eldar assault jump troops that come with wings.

Reaper's models are too static for my liking, and the mantic gargoyle squad is way too bestial looking for what I want.

Not sure about the colour scheme, execution's great though.

Alright, the mace is finished now, front side at least. Decided to use red-purple for the handle to differentiate it from the red armor without contrasting too much as I didn't want to guide the attention there. Also the middle rod part is black mixed with a bit of turquoise, this helps to make the orange OSL stronger I think, and it is at the same time the split complementary to the red armor, just like the bookmark's yellow-green, which guides the eye to the book of Lorgar, which is a key element to the model's backstory.

Let me know if I failed any of this color theory bullshit reasoning.

Frankly, how good are you at sculpting, because I would probably get a Dark eldar succubus or scourge, trim the armour down, get greenstuff or an alternative and craft the main model.

Don't have the tools readily available, and limited sculpting experience, but I suppose this could be a learning experience.

>Reaper's models are too static for my liking,
did you even look?
sophie is a reaper mascot, but they have other succubi. They also have a bunch of tieflings called hellborn that could fit the bill.

Anyway, as I said succubi are not really hard to find.

Sorry, I meant single pieced. Point is, they're not what I'm looking for.

I'm not sold on the green personally, it's a strong contrast with nothing to tie it to the rest of the model. Same reason I was asking if you had something else orange.

Just spitballing here, but if you had some green runes dotted about the scrolls it could help?

Thanks mates, appreciate the answers! I've been using TheArmyPainter paint supplies for my work, but it's getting a bit expensive, so I may switch some to these Vallejo ones and see how I like them...
I just hope they're as pigmented as TheArmyPainters are...

The green is probably going to be tamed down quite a bit, I too think it's too strong.

Wish I could blend like that. Looks amazing. Been working on my Catachans and trying to figure out if I want to make Ogryns or Bullgryns for my new kit.

Those eyes, my dude. Props for trying, and the one in the middle doesn't look awful, but the right is pretty crazy looking.

Consider painting them black with white dots in the corners instead.

Props though man, they don't look the greatest, (TRUST me, mine don't either, I'm definitely NOT one to critisize...see my WIP grail knights..) I love the theme and look you're going for though.. Probably want to thin the paints.

I like your show of muscle tones though, the darker rescesses look good... The faces (eyes, mouthes etc) look a bit off though. You'll probably get shit on here, but I actually like 'em. Keep going with them

Yeah, eyes is still something I'm working with. They're both 20+ year old GW sculpts so they're already not the best looking guys out there. The female Catachan is especially difficult because her eyes are so much smaller.

Using the 'ol "20 year old sculpt" excuse hm?? Just messing with you, like I said, I think they look pretty decent. I also like the sort of rough "fabric" feel they have. Did you put rough coat on them or something? the texture of the models looks gritty and grainy. Not a bad thing, but it's just a different texture

>They're both 20+ year old GW sculpts so they're already not the best looking guys out there.
these models look far better than the plastic catachans that came after them.
Seriously. There is nothing wrong with the models.

Also the female specialist is rare as fuck these days.

>when someone uses an image you made for the OP image

It's a good feel.

On another note, I gave up on trying for the orange/blue contrast because I couldn't get the values right and settled for a purple, but now I'm not happy with that either. I like the skin, metal and blue armour now, so they're set in, I just need a colour for the robes.

The fact that GW doesn't paint eyes in their non Eavy-metal stuff and in none of their painting guides should indicate it's an expert level technique that should be avoided if you are not experienced enough as it can damn ruin a model.

Building a chaos defiler at the moment and the faces in the kit aren't Nurgley enough for me. Any suggestions for heads to use that would fit better?

Greenstuff

I think the tank hatch fits on the head spot, you could have a nurgling popping it's head out or something

The eyes are ok, but do this next time
With your smallest brush, paint a black line in the eye socket.
Again with your smallest brush, paint a white line inside that black line
Once again with your smallest brush, paint a small black dot in the centre, making sure it touches the bottom and the top of the sclera section

Finally getting back into it with some Salamanders. Guy on the far right is done, those on the left are WIP.

Im not being racist (so shut the fuck up) but salamanders are supposed to be charred black, not negroid.
You have red of your lense leaking on your green helm, and your red edge highlights are bit messy but good job

Anyone have pics of some neat non-standard Eldar paint schemes? Really appreciated, thx.

Very nice, user

Yeah, the lens is leaking for sure. I had to stop at one point or else I'd be fixing stuff all over. I think once the squad is all done I'll go back and do touch ups here and there. Thanks.

I get what you're saying about the skin, I just hate painting black on the faces. I can't do it without making it look lifeless or like stone. So I just went with the older edition Salamanders look.

Not even your model but even from GW , which yellow grass grow from a grey rock? Is that even possible?

Meant to post this with that.

Bro..do NOT make them charred black. They're YOUR models, not GW's...paint them how you think looks best. I honestly like them the skin tone you have them at. Dark, but not pitch black. Plus, your armor and lighting is really really sharp mate

I know what you mean. In my head I see it as a long baron wasteland. So years ago there would have been fields of green, but for whatever reason the majority has withered away and all that is left is the raw earth and some dried husks of plants etc

What should I do not to leave them flesh-clored? Just paint them white and leave them be?

Leave the shade to settle in the recesses of the eyes and leave it like that.

>Pic related is how I do my eyes using the above

I think you should keep practicing. Some people prefer to just darken the recesses with wash and leave it like that.

This is what I do too. 100% of the time it looks better than peoples' painted eyes, unless they are like a Golden Daemon winner.

This technique only works on male/squinting/yelling models though. If you're painting something like Celestine you're going to have to do glowing eyes or actually paint the eyeballs.

I tend to give the eyes a couple washes, to go for the Darkest Dungeon style look.

They do look great compared to the plastics which is why I collect them. That being said, the early 90s Catachans are have a much bulkier look than the early 2000s metal Catachans. And the female sculpt's face suffers from GW 90s female face syndrome. The reason I painted her black is because her nose is very flat and it looks off
if you give her a white skintone.

I find painting in the eyes really breathes some life into the model. Even my mediocre attempts at painting eyes makes a big difference. On the gaming table my models aren't going to be scutinized from six inches under a white light like here on /wip/ (not that I don't appreciate the criticism) so I can live with it.

I'll actually offer a pic to go with , I'm not claiming to be GD but that's why I keep practicing.

Female specialist was never really rare. She was packaged with the flamer guy I believe. I hacked off her grenade launcher and gave her a melta gun. You can find her on ebay for about 10 to 15 dollars pretty regularly only because she's one of the few official female models. I had a much harder time tracking down a few specific sculpts of the lasgun guys and Sly Marbo.

Looks worse than unpainted eyes.

Finished them up. Still need to base them and maybe do a few touch up highlights but I'm happy with the result.

They need some Khorne red on the lips and another wash off nuln oil.

That sounds like horrible advice. I hit the lips up with the base coat (Rhinox Hide) but they're already dark enough. Nuln Oil would just make then really flat looking I think.

You failed to spot the /pol/ poster.

Wish I could afford one of those.

Fuck me. When did /pol/ start invading /wip/?

I don't think one joke constitutes an invasion senpai.

DAT'S WACIST

What kind of tool do you guys use to drill for Magnetizing?

I bought an Armypainter model drill and i'm not sure it can take bits large enough to use 1/8 magnets. (3mm)

Does anyone make dremels slow enough to use on warhammer stuff?

Could use some advice on this guy. Ogroid Thaumaturge I'm converting into a Thousand Sons Daemon Prince. I think the head works, but as you can see I have a lot of work to do to make it blend with the rest of the model. I could use some tips for that.

I'm not much of a sculptor so I'd prefer to use bits, but I don't wanna bling him up too much around the head and detract from the rest of the model, because I don't want to bling up the rest of the model either.

Wat do, /wip/

People use drills. For larger holes you need bigger drills, or if you want you can try widening the hole with your existing drill but it might not be a perfect circle.

I have the AP drill and it's kinda shitty. Gets the job done but not the sturdiest and fit and finish is terrible.

My advice? Look for some armor plates that fit with the aestetic of Tzeentch. I'd say the hip armor on the Rubric marines may be EXACTLY what you want.

about to turn the new "eldar triumvirate" upside down. Turning the avatar into a KoS and the lady into a Herald. anyone got some ideas for the Incubi or the familiar?

please whisper sweet lies into my ear and promise me slaanesh is going nowhere

Hey /wip/, I've been converting a few Genestealer Cultists into Van Saar for my local Necromunda campaign, and this is my colour test mini. I'm just not entirely sold on the scheme. It doesn't quite "pop".

Do you have any advice? I want to keep the white overalls with red padding and the brass collar, but I'm not entirely happy with it now. Maybe add something cold for contrast?

spare beastbirdman shields?

>please whisper sweet lies into my ear and promise me slaanesh is going nowhere

Sure thing bub, the new slaanesh releases are just over there behind the chemical sheds

Incubus + Harlequin mask bits = Masque of Slaanesh?

Colder white, looks like you're using celestra atm? Try going into white via the space wolf colours.

Slaanesh and Ynnead are going to become Eldar yin/yang.

Callin it now. Excess and an actual death/end to the party. This will leave options for Chaos Eldar, DE, Slaaneshi boobgoblins, corsairs, whatever you like.

Is that what you needed, bb?

a stripe of yellow on the gun might work

painting his shoulder lamp with light blue or yellow would also help

Cleaned up her eyes a little. Not going to win an award, but she looks less surprised now. Thanks for the critique guys.

I wouldnt actually mind that, but I spend about 1k iin the last half-year on slaanesh themed CSM and Daemons and are having panic-attacks about all my work being quasi-worthless

Practice first a bit, before you try.

I could do that, frankly I hate the way it looks on the Rubric Marines anyway so that could actually work.

Might be just a little bit too big but definitely worth looking into.

Thank you both. What else has /wip/ got for me?

Major improvement, looking a bit shell shocked tho, fitting for a Catachan.

Is there a video tutorial for this? Like I get it in theory, but every time I try I fuck up putting the pupil in and have to repaint the white over. Seeing it in practice would help A LOT.

They wont be worthless user.

Just like all my Tau Auxiliaries arent worthless. Right, Knarlocs? R-right Gue'vesa?

No but srsly i wouldnt be surprised if they wiped out elfs before taking your booby demons away. Also now that i have a Slaaneshi's attention. Are Steeds of Slaanesh easy to chop up and work with? Say, for putting Kroot hound bits onto one maybe?

Being in the only female in your platoon probably has that effect. Speaking of which I bought some Raging Hero jailbirds and was kind of disappointed with how long and lanky they made them. I figured I could slot them into my army easily but they stand like a head over my other guys and they're all doing dumb feminine poses.

Mine is still being delivered. Do you know if it fits a 1/8 drill bit for 3mm magnets you find online.

In Hawaii lava fields, usually theres ohia trees and yellow grass poking through first. Aged, the lava rock does look darker grey.

It comes with a 1/8 bit. It has a screw type chuck to hold various sizes of drill.

On amazon it says the one I ordered comes with 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.8 mm bits.

I think 1/8 is 3mm have you used yours for bigger magnets than the 1/16th ones.

Looking great.

The cultist kit is so fucking sexy, you can make so much cool shit with it.

just for reference.

Oompa Loompa Tzeentch?

Whoops I was talking about the 1.8. I've never used anything larger than what was included with the drill, but I took a ruler and measured the chuck hole for you right now and it's exactly 3mm.

I've got a brand new AP Regiment brush, and the damn thing keeps forking/splitting on me. Is this normal or what?
I'm a complete novice to painting, so there's that.

I think the leg armor thing worked pretty well. As soon as that green stuff is dry I'll go in and neaten it up a little bit, but I think we have a winner.

.>Are Steeds of Slaanesh easy to chop up and work with? Say, for putting Kroot hound bits onto one maybe

The Heads wouldnt be too much of a hassle I guess, though im not too familiar with kroot hound dimensions but ima assume that the only thing that stays kroot is the Head.

That being said the Head is part of the body on the sprue and I never clipped one off. the only thing I did was to stuff tongues onto the metal ones

the leg-bits look like pic related

The ones from seekers have more radical poses and 3 monoboobs, while the chariot ones all look the same and have no breasts

That's not normal, did you get paint in the metal part of the brush? AP Regiment brush sucks regardless, mine kept a tip fine but it lost most of its hairs after a while.

washing with a light blue, and building from celestra grey to uluthan grey and a edge highlight of white might do it.

BROTHER!

oh and They have saddles on their back so that could be interesting to deal with

What is the best source for multi-meltas on my tac marines without having to buy devastator boxes?

Back again, I finished the armor and am feeling pretty mixed about it. The Metal Medium didn't do much it seems and am unsure if I like the gloss or not. I had to wash over the depths again after the gloss coat cause it made all the shadowed areas shinny.

Anyways I think don't think I will go much further with the armor, will move onto the decal and other pits though this time give the armor armor bits a matte look.

Sorry for the poor photo.

Ah... Where is our Quarry? I long for the hunt!

Bits sites. I don't even know where you can get them besides the Devastator box.
