I like this idea more as a pot-luck sort of dealio where everyone submits some images and yours is random.
Either sort by class or race so you dont have to play a fighter when you wanted to play a mage.

I can see random character portraits working more smoothly in a classless system, though I suppose if the system supports enough build options winding up with a weedy looking barbarian and a bard built like 5 brick shithouses wouldn't be so bad.

I think it could actually be a fun way to get the party to interact with eachother before play, and if your image gets used, bonus points. The hard part would be setting the limitors, Especially when Gender+Race+Class are all factors in a suitable image.
