Why is 40K so popular?

Why is 40K so popular?

I liked how it was about Your Dudes and the stories were about randoms before 5e/6e forward turned the entire setting into Herohammer; which has gotten exponentially worse with recent campaigns

because its fun!

It's fun and video games popularized it

Mostly I just like painting them in a way that painting my historical model planes don't. I've never actually played a game.

Me too

Because it targets people who are new to the hobby and has been around for a long time.
Much like D&D, far from the best systems, but it's the most well know one. When I say I play miniature games, a lot of people ask back "so, Warhammer?"

>40K so popular?
>so popular
>so
Nice b8, but it's not Star Wars
>Why
- Dawn of War
- huge stores network
-casual focused products
-low entry level (after few games you already knew what you should buy to win)

Shit is just cool

You must lack of any fantasy to not being able to have stories about your dudes in such a huge universe where everything can happen.

For the same reason as D&D

Intertia

>in such a huge universe
>all universe about 5-6 important primarchs+ Abba and Emperor

im sure that abbadon is everywhere, right?

And at every time.

Lack of competition.

I got into Warhammer when I stubbled upon some fluff about orks. It was fun to read.
Then I got Dawn of War and it was very very fun to play.
Then I got some HH book and it was cozy too.

Never played tabletop warhammer. I was too poor to afford it.

The 40K universe is rich, epic, grim, dark, not super consistant and also dumb. It's magnet for nerds who enjoyed nordic, greek or egyptian mythology when they were kid I guess.

>40K
>epic, grim, dark

I think one thing a lot of new miniatures seem to miss is that lore and aesthetics are actually important and that if you neglect them you're going to suffer. I don't see it as unsurprising that the miniature game which is either closely behind or as shot past 40k is X-Wing, which likely owes quite a bit to being based on Star Wars.

Even games which seemed to have carved out a decent sized place for themselves like Warmahordes, Infinity, and Malifaux have to learn that they can't just ignore the above. Only problem they really run into is that they're focused on certain genres and thus may not be appealing if you don't like them.

> :^)
For me it's the fact that it's a fun game to play with large amounts of customization.

Tried to get into other games like warmahordes and none of them have quite the level of variety at 40k. (Fantasy when it was around, too)

>. Only problem they really run into is that they're focused on certain genres
And that's good, we doesn't need second GW

It's fun and it turn boring nerds into funny people.

>lore
No one cares about the lore until they've already bought their first Space Marines box.

As for aesthetics, yeah. GW stuff is designed to be easy to paint and yet look good. They've been in this business for a while now. There are few miniature companies that make better looking stuff than GW, many of them are third party bits producers for GW minis.

And once someone is hooked on the lore and the space marine crack they will call everything else "boring" or "uninspiring" just because it is not their preferred universe.

It is a lie that 40k has better aesthetic though, compare Centurions to Infinity Geckos and you'll see which one looks like shit. It's just that the guys from Nottingham had a lot of time perfecting their skills at selling this stuff to kids.

In the modeling hobby as a whole I'm pretty sure WW2 has GW beat by a country mile. When it comes to games, X-Wing is probably their biggest rival right now, but I don't have any numbers to confirm it. I bet if GW did some WW2 stuff they would blow all their competition out of the water.

>and yet look good.
>GW

I may have left GW for Infinity, but just because I realized a well made steak is delicious does not stop me from appreciating a McDouble from time to time.

>money invested
>Popularity
>Best plastic models on the market
>Guarantied communities to play with
>Competitive scene.

>not super consistent

I would totally commit that heresy.

Because the idea of countless angry zealots fighting with chainsaws on board a giant planet destroying space cathedral is fucking rad.

>Ancient setting with metric fucktonnes of lore
>Visually distinct aesthetics and design
>Holy roman empire IN SPAAACE
>SPACE WIZARDS
>SPACE ELVES
>SPACE DEMONS
>etc.
>your dudes
>it's the most popular wargame, plenty of inertia
>generally good plastic kits

it's easy to understand, vast to read into, spacious to input, got fleshed by artists more than writers and while grimdark it can be seen as tongue in cheek by an outside observer.

>distinct aesthetics and design
>generally good plastic kits

Everyone says 40k is all about "Your Guys." That's false. 40k isn't just about the guys, it's about everything else as well. 40k is about "Your Setting."

What GeeDubs has done is create a multitude of building blocks that make up the 40k setting, and a general idea of how those pieces fit together. From there it's up to you to assemble them and add your expression tothose pieces. Sure, 40k has their own way of doing it that may be considered "official," but it's more interesting to see what you can do on your own, as with Legos. It's why we have more spin-offs of 40k than we know what to do with, and why we have so much original writing, characters, and art. It's how we can have the annoying Cultist-Chan, the endearing Love & Krieg, our dauntless Marine Chapters, Nobledark 40k, the Hector Heresy, Imperium Asunder, Love Can Bloom, TTS, The AGP... well, you get the point. 40k is the cloth that we cut from, but what we fashion out of it is something else entirely, and what makes it so great.

Nice missing of the point nigga.
>I dislike this because it's shifting focus away from what I like to something else
>You can still do what you like even though it's less supported, why are you bitching?

Believe it or not, there was a time.

I like it because no matter which team you back, you're still rooting for assholes

This is completely wrong. So many people have started playing the game because of all the memes and general knowledge that gets thrown around on here alone. Yea that isn't exactly 'lore' but the 40k universe is pretty pervasive.
