Last time on Song of Swords: Jimmy's anime girl reaction face folder dumped Rat fecht repost Why SoS is the way it is Rules for the upcoming Tournament and a few character submissions!
Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. Kickstarter is happening NOW we are kicking ass baby!
Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.
MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials. Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements. It's NOT what's currently on Opaque's website, because Jimmy is Jimmy. mega.nz/#F!S89jTT7J!ozFi9GvzaFGHfBa59Ik2-Q
We also have a Discord now, at discord.gg/zzTq7Xw Come join us if you wanna ask a question or have a friendly fecht, or shitpost at Jimmy in real-time
>There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w >The room might be empty, but the people who teach the game still browse the thread frequently. If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.
Submitting my tournament character for lore review before I build him.
An Orredin nobleman who, long ago, was a high up in the Imperial army. He commanded, led, advised the Emperor, and was generally a pretty fucking big deal. However, following his retirement, he spent literally centuries throwing debauched orgies and absurd tournaments. By the time he was approached with a request to back a coup against the Emperor, he had forgotten most of the things that had made him valuable to the Empire in the first place. When the coup failed he was shoved off in a pointless position that would never support his way of life. Now (relatively) impoverished and having forgotten most of the things he made his fortune with in the first place, he has done the unthinkable and left Helion to remake his fortune. As it turns out, this involves hand to hand combat in the arena. Oh, well. He fought once, he can fight again.

>someone is trying to argue that maille armor wasn't widely used in europe and is just a meme Someone give me sources, I need to bludgeon this person.
Jacob Sanchez
It's okay. Today, because of For Honor, I had people try to tell me that A) katanas could cut through late-medieval plate B) katanas weren't made of steel, but they couldn't tell me what they were made of, and c) plate was super heavy and made you slow.
Jeremiah Lopez
>tfw /sos/ has trained an entire generation of realistic arms/armor autists
Jason Thompson
Literally any medieval illustration. Is this somewhere on Veeky Forums, or a retarded person you know from elsewhere?
It's all true though Katanas are the greatest weapon ever made You can even cut through T-72s with a katana. That's why the USSR didn't invade Japan after WW2
Caleb Hall
They probably also think that samurai armor was made of wood.
Camden Morgan
Given that katanas could cut through steel plate, why wouldn't they armor themselves in wood? Arrows get stuck in trees and it's not going to stop a katana anyway this is bait
Nathan Davis
...
Levi Davis
That said, finding out that they were going with wood armor for the samurai faction really did fricassee my fanny even more than the slightly off armor design itself
Nathaniel Cox
Woh. I didn't know wood could rust!
Connor Morales
It must be the famous Ironwood!
Bentley Phillips
Stay beautiful, /sos/
David Green
Honorable Wapanese tree, folded ten thousand time. Cut through steel like katanah through tank.

Where does this sheet come from, anyway?
Noah Foster
It's my personal sheet that I made after getting tired of doing text sheets like this >will you release it No >why It's not complete
Anthony Bailey
I mean, I certainly have an Excel sheet of my own device but I figured I'd step in line with the crowd.
>Looking at other kickstarters Ahh, nothing like a tall glass of whitepill in the evening.
Nathan Jenkins
She will live for about 10 seconds before I burn her as a witch for having no Faith arc
With AGI 8 and WIT 8, her ADR is 8, not 7.
Luke Stewart
>if I compare myself to failures and idiots, I feel good You are better than them. Your product is better, your design is better, and your marketbase is better. The only thing holding you back is marketing, and many of the other ones you're looking at probably sucked there even worse. Comparing yourself to them is like comparing your house to a homeless man. Sure, it puts things in perspective, but it's only one half of the perspective. Also compare your house to the Sun King, and realize that in fact the successes and failures of others are so broad as to be functionally irrelevant to your own situation. Then, armed with that knowledge, set high goals for yourself and strive to attain them. If you have reached your goals, they were not high enough and you need new ones. If you fail to reach your goals, then you have at least drawn closer to them than if you hadn't tried.
Speaking of this, how is the RPG.net Q&A, or whatever you have planned, going to go down? You're going to have to go there some time.
And any news on the Adventure? How much it will cost, what it might entail, when you're going to talk about it, anything?
Nathan Thomas
Well, shit. Seems I got shadow banned for spamming (deleting my old post, reposting). Will talk to the moderators and maybe repost tomorrow.
Posting the sweet art to the Imaginary Network and what not will get us those sweet, sweet Gamemaster pledges.
Xavier Clark
Characters currently submitted to the tournament: 1) Jean-Grant de Saint Colere, Failed Revolt Leader 2) Kal Desar, Karthacki Footsman 3) Zeyaad Sulakir, Kedouin Raider Captain 4) Rosalie Azevedo, Pretty Knave 5) German Longsword Jobber, Jobber
If you've submitted one and I haven't seen it, post it again! If you're still working on your character, keep at it, and submit it when you're done!
Remember that your characters should be actual characters, and certainly need to have their Arcs filled out. Your Saga Arc can be as simple as "Win the tournament."
Aiden Morgan
>Looking at other kickstarters So we're aiming for 900% funding, right?
Alexander Richardson
Those are the very top. Dont be ridiculous.
Honestly you should participate in the off-site threads if you wanna see it do it better
>Those are the very top. Song of Swords should be too.
>you should participate in the off-site threads What makes you think I haven't been? Hell, I've got the most recent post in several of them. But there's only so much you can do before it's spam, I'm not a dev and don't even know the system that well compared to a lot of other folks here, and the threads are mostly not well-situated to get attention in the first place.
Also Jimmy, some kind of breakdown on which sites are routing in backers would help volunteer shills.
David Kelly
I knew I shouldn't do things after work. I am pretty sure her AGI is 7,not 8. I will confirm in the morning when I am not a corpse.
Complete Monster removes the Belief Arc, though.
Angel Gomez
>Complete Monster removes the Belief Arc, though. You're right!
Sebastian Davis
Right now this place and Reddit are our big sellers, and while a lot of the people posting on plebbit are our people, a very significant number of people seem to back us from there, suggesting that they don't post, but they do read what we post, and then decide we're worth funding.
I think this is going to be a repeating thing, people don't know what questions to ask and they don't know how to start broaching the subject of the game, but if they see/hear things they like, they might want it anyway. Reddit has hueg potential.
Ian Lewis
Ah, my oldest gripe with SoS: Wanting to make a balanced suite of skills, but the Skills-per-PCP ratio being the rankest of ass.
Frankly, guys, if you fixed skills at chargen, you wouldn't need to have buffed CHA's determination.
Chase Johnson
Here and reddit are given, though, since they're the only sites we've had high-profile threads on. What about the other ones?
Caleb Parker
I have this idea of doing a roll20 game where it's a fecht like
All the players are playing 1 character that's carted around with a track of choices like the old John Galt fecht threads.
Something to celebrate the recent luck with the KS.
I was thinking of making it a weekly thing, hosted on several dates and times to accommodate multiple parties. The games would range from a wide host of different time periods, genres, and subject matter with diverse character pools to chose from.
Jace Bailey
Skill packets don't exist anymore do they?
Josiah Price
We've finally hit $18k
Daniel Gomez
Not at present, no.
Anthony Mitchell
Well fuck that, they're supposed to
Liam Hall
For all of 1.9.9 we've been doing homebrew skill packets. Choose five skills, pay three. That's how I made my character for the Tournament.
Robert Collins
NOT IN THE RULES REEEEEEEEE
Andrew Nguyen
Skill packets are a dumb notion anyways. They need to be replaced with something better, but removing them isn't a bad thing in itself.
Carter Powell
They didn't address the core problem adequately for as much as they bloated the rules. They encouraged diverse skill acquisitions, sure, but at the end of the day no character came out of the box more than merely competent in anything.
Chase Martinez
Fuck off. Making a character who isn't completely incompetent is impossible without them as it is. They're back in Ballad, they were admitted to only be left out of 1.9.9 as an editing mistake, and Jimmy himself suggested the 5 for 3 system. They're part of the rules.
Michael Walker
Unless the tournament master says so, it's kind of a moot point, mate.
Carson Barnes
Not that the tournament will use them for anything.
Aaron Perry
There was a time when people received extra Skill points from Intelligence. I still use that rule in my own games, on top of Packets. That helps some, but it's only a bandaid on skills being so hard to come by.
Hunter Richardson
Pretty sure that's still in there.
Tyler Torres
Holy fuck it is. It should be listed along with the Intelligence stat as well, not just way down in Skills.
Dominic Hall
Can you respond to this post? >
Ryan Morris
Shouldn't skills be a function of age? I mean, that's basically how it is in real life, intelligence can impact it a bit but the normal human variation in skills due to intelligence is much smaller than the variation in skills due to age.
Julian Roberts
But also quality of training, access to education, and personal motivation. Which is why it's just a general category in chargen.
Kayden White
>an old man who fucked around all his life should have more skills than a young man who has dedicated himself to learning/training
Colton Bailey
I'm ok with him not responding.
Thomas Mitchell
You are probably busy with video stuff and shit, but can you answer the king and firearm question on lelddit and rpgnet?
Anthony Carter
>quality of training, True, that goes along with intelligence as a modifier on, essentially, the speed of acquisition. That too, I would say, is comparatively minor.
>access to education, and personal motivation. Those have more to do with which skills than with the quantity or magnitude of the skills. People spend their lives learning stuff, and generally stuff that's relevant to their lives.
>implying otherwise Have you ever met an old man who fucked around all his life? Fucking around is actually way more conducive to quantity of skills than just getting one job, one routine, and sticking with it. But even old people who've lived like that acquire skills from their daily and personal life, from hobbies, from all sorts of things, not to speak of the extreme expertise that arises in profession-relevant skills.
Adam Bell
I'm trying on the rpg.net, but it's doing something weird where it isn't recognizing my space bar hits. wtf is with this site?
Dominic Robinson
Are you sure it's not just your keyboard?
Ian Jenkins
Age is a way more fucky PCP category than simple skills indicating quality of education and personal training. You are right, in that older people would have more experience doing a variety of shit, but older and more experienced people would have more PCP anyway.
Isaiah Barnes
Alt+32 should do it.
Grayson Garcia
Alright, I'll put it this way >40 year old mailman who has been living a rather dull middle class life and pursued no greater endeavor, being largely content to consume media in his spare time >knows how to drive, how to cook, and talk to people and is comfortably furnished
>25 year old doctoral student who practices HEMA in his spare time and has gone on several internation trips during his breaks >has a significant complement of skills, fighting proficiency, several boons, but is also under a mountain of debt
Imagine a dozen other such anecdotes. Argue against or for the Int bonus, sure, but trying to tabulate age is plainly infeasible. It's the experience that matters, and yes, generally older people will have more, but that doesn't matter as much for character creation.
James Taylor
Most old people don't know shit because most people don't have the dedication to truly learn skills to a great extent.
You don't know what you're talking about and should hang yourself before your stupidity affects others.
see
Andrew Thomas
>how to cook, and talk to people These are actually pretty big deals.
Also, my mailman knows how to build canoes from scratch, and he fits your description. Just because people don't rail off a laundry list of their eccentricities at the drop of a hat doesn't mean they're not remarkable.
>25 year old doctoral student who practices HEMA in his spare time and has gone on several internation trips during his breaks His skills are 1. Pretty good in the theory of one discipline, will get better and gain practical skill over time. 2. Dabbling skills, more than a layman but not enough to be useful, in several "elective" disciplines 3. Fights passing well in a dead discipline 4. Really fucking good at writing essays, probably. 5. Knows how to use trains, planes, and/or automobiles
I feel like you probably could have stacked the deck even more, but the fact is that 25 year old will eventually get older, he'll get a job doing things people see every day, and he'll eventually learn enough shit that something like HEMA or taking a dew vacations will no longer even cross his mind as something that constitutes a skill.
Anthony Hernandez
None of this changes the fact that this is impossible to make into a decently balanced character creation system based on PCP.
Jaxson Hall
Does the winner of the tournament have the right to nominate another's character to the game instead of their own if they like them more?
Josiah Brooks
Sure! Of course it relies on the generous user offering his Visionary Noble PLUS+ slot up for it, but sure.
Oliver King
Gonna try to make a Ge user for the big fight, might take a few days though.
Aiden Reed
You may choose the Orredin race but can't use any of its magic auto-win spells.
Liam Scott
Yeah, none of the Orredin's kekkei genkai
Joshua Williams
Don't be afraid to ask for help or drop by the Roll20 to for some practice fechten
Andrew Hill

Jeremiah Perry
Damn it Jimmy we've seen ones labelled up to 771, what's the deal?
Kevin Miller
He's holding out on us. I'm cancelling my pledge until we get the REAL folder.
John Lee
>Releasing everything at once Come on dude.
Carson Foster
GURPSfag here, just wanted to say best of luck to you all and your system development. Played RoS and had good fun, even though it didn't turn into a lasting thing for my group.
Good luck to you, and good gaming!
Isaiah Johnson
How cruel that the kickstarter starts when I have no money.
Nolan Gomez
>tfw can't post backer number because transferring the remaining 50 bucks to the prepaid cc is STILL NOT FUCKING DONE JUST KILL ME NOW I was there when the KS was still under 10 backers man.
Evan James
Oh shit there's actually 354 Items right now, a bunch are just labelled the same.
Lincoln Thomas
how can one not have $15 to spare. If you're that poor, go rob someone. Use what you've learned from SoS combat. I'm sure it'll work out.
