No one wants yet another fantasy RPG, especially one with half-assed attempts at originality
>My Elves live in mountains!
>My Dwarves live in trees!
>My planet is a cube!
>I am very original!
No you are not

Only execution matters, originality far less.

Neither Pathfinder Golarian nor Harry Potter is original in any sense at all. Neither is Witcher setting.

Projection pro

Oh yes, originality matters a lot. There's a reason why Morrowind is so beloved.

But execution matters more.

brother in la, ah, ah, ah, awwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!

I'm a pbta generation guy, I make my settings on the way from vague assumptions and my players decisions

This is how my setting originally grew. But over the years of constant use it's become very consistent and rather bloated and now even people other than I use it in our gaming club.

>Morrowind is so beloved.

But it isn't outside of autist forums

>Morrowind
>Original
Top kek, it's Gnosticism written for lame suburbanites

>Gnosticism
big word for a filthy n'wah

Eh, my best setting idea is a reality torn asunder, being slowly sewn back together by threads carried by the chosen of the nascent deity born from what remained of the old gods. Nice concept, but not a lot of solid detail or endgame yet. And to be honest, I'm not sure where to go with it.

I'm fine tuning the physics of my universe to explain how the initial event which created matter unfolded into the creation of the worlds as they exist in that universe, without relying on gravity as a crutch since all of my worlds are going to be flat.

duh. I've got some pretty spicy tax policies lined up for when I'm finished writing the pre-historic evolutionary lines and how they resulted in the common megafauna of that world.

Don't forget to stats common diseases and the rate of death for the population to them.
People here can't immerse themselves fully without that important detail.

>There's a reason why Morrowind is so beloved
Duck syndrom,and nothing more.

What if threads were hidden inside of chosen people, like their essence or something? A good aligned person might willingly give up their thread to save the world, the PC's just have to find them and alert them to its presence. Evil thread bearers probably won't give theirs up without a fight.

I'm introducing my players to that old DnD feeling with Beyond the Wall. Trying to come up with ways to flavor/personalize the standard tolkien races is a lot of fun!
Halflings- wandering gypsy people with caravans pulled by huge white dogs
Elves- live in the trees, farm large green beetles for food and armor
Dwarves-live in volcanos and use the natural gas to make an enormous battle mechs to fight the ice giants.
Trolls-big hairy fellas that live in swamps and grow larger by eating magic

It's not very original but I'm enjoying myself. Any suggestions for kingdoms or conflict?

but I have

>There's a reason why Morrowind is so beloved.
by plebs like you. other people play it because they like any somewhat decent fantasy. I'd rather have had standard elves and dwarves though.

fortunately, not every game company tries to cater to your demographic.

I don't know how high the tech level is in your world, but you could have it so that the Dwarfs are in conflict with human settlers who use the Volcanoes as natural gas as well. A resource conflict, where the Dwarfs are stubborn and insist they can't share the gases, or else they can't produce at full capacity.

> do you even have an excuse anymore?
I'm writing a shitty fanfic, because:
a) I want to practice before writing something serious
b) that's literally all I can afford to write time-wise and effort-wise because I'm working on my Physics PhD

Yeah, that's good. The dwarfs see themselves as defenders of civilization so they would be pretty irritated about other civilizations on the mountain.

The idea was there are just chunks of what used to be, floating around within the darkness and sometimes infested with shadow creatures. You have to cleanse the pieces before adding them together.

Evil thread bearers is a possibility later on I suppose, but the idea was the players are one of the first to be called upon.

Lizardmen cannibalistic hulks that ride emus larger than them.

>Physics PhD
People still do those?

You don't have to reinvent the wheel, you just have to make a good wheel.

Reminder.

But Dark Sun already exists.

>Duck syndrom
I had to google it to find out that it was, and now I know that you should have googled it too before using a phrase that you don't understand.

Bit it sucks balls.

Okay, now I'm fucking motivated.

Excuse me? Dark Sun is one of the best settings.

"Plebs" are by definition the largest and least sophisticated demographic that game companies, and entertainment businesses in general, cater to. In this case, the lovers of "standard elves and dwarves". Yes, you too. You can appreciate cardboard cutouts all you want, but don't get any ideas that it somehow makes you a part of the elite. It makes you a part of the sheeple.

>muh grimdork
>post-apocalypse and fantasy don't glue well
>minuscule scope
>edgy races that defy stereotypes for the sake of it
>has 90's written all over it

My OC DONUT STEEL story will stay in my head, because there's no point telling it. I'm the only one who'll like it anyway.

You never know til you try. Think of it this way - how many fucking terrible stories out there took off like wildfire regardless of their quality? The only thing you stand to lose is a movie deal and shitloads of cash.

Actually you're still inferior to her after you've finished your novel unless you manage to rake in millions and millions of cash.
>but fantasy is a niche genre, it will never sell as well as twilight!
That wasn't the problem for Tolkien or Martin. The real problem is that most fantasy novels are, in reality, WORSE than even Twilight.

I don't need a killer original fantasy universe. I need cool dungeon shit, so that's what I'm making. Extensive worldbuilding is dumb and pointless anyway, so fuck it.

>he's proud of rollplaying

Joke's on you, I already started! Even better, it's all in service of creating an interesting dynamic place for adventures to happen, making it perfect for GMs who want a pre-fab setting with enough blank space to insert their own adventures. The book comes with not one, not two, but THREE stand-alone adventures to get you started playing.

I mean, I'm probably never going to get published but screw it, if I'm going to waste my time making something I'm going to make something good and useful for OTHER people, not just my shitty group.

>He thinks his way of playing pretend is better than someone else's way of playing pretend.
>He deliberately misinterprets posts to make himself feel superior about his way of playing pretend.
>He doesn't know about the Stormwind Fallacy

Shut up nerd, nobody cares what you think.

its not about a killer though

Nobody who knows phrases like "Stormwind Fallacy" should ever call anyone a nerd.

>He deliberately misinterprets posts

>"I only need combat mazes, fuck everything else"
>"but I'm not a rollplayer, stop putting words into my mouth!"

>GRRM_salivating.jpg

KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Also, Rule of Three. Three elements, such as three towns, three entrances, etc.

Write something for yourself and everyone will love it.

Write something for everyone and you're a complete fucking asshole and everyone will both hate the writing and hate you and you'll end up like the average music teacher and blowing your brains out after failing to eat a fried chicken meal you got at some grocery store earlier that evening out of sheer depression.

>Everyone ITT agreeing with the general consensus of the board and acting like they are smugly 'defeating' some opposition to their idea about what is good/original and what isn't, even though that opposition doesn't exist

Congratulations Veeky Forums, you have become /pol/.

It exists and it's the general consensus outside of Veeky Forums. But autists can't bear having a discussion with a reasonable person, so they fight windmills on Veeky Forums instead.

Literally /pol/

I googled it too. I think he meant baby duck syndrome: The tendency of computer users to always think the system they originally started using is better. That at least makes sense in context.

I just don't know where to start

:*(

D-Do books count in this bullying thread

I've written 330,000 words but it's all autistic so no one will ever read it.

>Implying dungeons can't be anything else besides combat hallways because reasons
>Implying roleplaying just can't happen at all in a dungeon. Can't be done. It's just impossible.
>Keeps using rollplayer to try and justify his screeching about how his way of playing pretend is SOOOOOO superior

Settle down nerd.

I have reams of paper full of everything from metaphysics to locations of valuable resources even down to number systems and logical languages as well as spoken languages. Wanna read it?

...thought not.

There's a reason I DM in other worlds. Convoluted worldbuilding is basically masturbatory. If someone wants me to mentally jerk off on them then kosher, but that is not a thing.

>She died anyway
>That's not the point!

Okay, I laughed. Keep working on that shit.

I'd read it user

haha

hot egg

OP is right, I spend far to little time actually writing the plot these characters are in and far too much time drawing porn of them.

47,852 words on mine.
How the fuck do you do it?

Eh, define "start". I've written a bunch of pages, but they all suck ass.

Something that has me hung up on going to far with my fantasy settings is that there needs to be some sort of vector for it to reach any sort of audience outside of my personal playgroup of friends.

I love the idea of world building, but to some degree if you don't actually put it to use for anything it's really just a form of masturbation. It's especially common on Veeky Forums where anons get lost in the minutiae without ever working on a delivery mechanism or any way to make their setting digestible to someone who isn't them.

Personally I'm working figuring out which delivery mechanism best suits my needs. I'm very slowing working on trying to draw better and doing research into video and audio editing with the idea of cludging together a small youtube series out of my group's sessions since I've started working on them. I'm a programmer by trade, so making media is pretty new to me, so I'm mostly starting from square one.

I want to make a Bionicle ripoff but with typical fantasy races

Humans, Giants, Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs.

It's gunna be like AtLA, Bionicle, Record of Lodoss War, and some other shit.

It'll be great

Okay I'm turned on and stuff, but why did you choose this picture

One word at a time.

Put it on gumroad and just make sure to watermark and brand it. Sell it for $2-4 each

A pregnant woman and a secret

Because I'm terrible at writing properly without it seeming autistic, I fucking need to spend 10 minutes just structuring a Veeky Forums post so that I don't seem like somone with no concept of basic grammar and sentence structure and even then I usually fail.

>gumroad

First I've heard of this. Do people actually use it for Veeky Forums stuff?

>I would rather eat shit, fortunately, not every game company tries to cater to not eating shit

Try reading what you type out loud. Sometimes verbalizing your writing helps you figure out what sounds natural.

Thanks user, i'll give that a try.

As far as I know nobody on Veeky Forums posts a dime for anything, but I'm not that familiar with /the/ specifically.

I just know that I'd be willing to pay for quality material and support creators. In not I'm the market for campaign material myself, though. I have my own world I'm designing

>surely, out of billions of people, I'm the only one who likes [thing]!
come on user, overpopulation has many things that might make you a pessimist, but this isn't one

>he shivered in the cold air as he ate the hot eggs
either comfy or lewd, so I'd read it

cowboy bebop's asteroid blues
there, I preemptively stopped any attempts at originality you might have had
why can't I be original?

The entirety of Metroid franchise can be classified as "cool dungeon shit", user. Just because people don't care what's going on outside of these dungeons doesn't mean it's a boring "rollplay" murderhobo romp.

>I fucking need to spend 10 minutes just structuring a Veeky Forums post

I know this feel.

Basing an entire fantasy setting on historically accurate myths and legends around the world (no made up fantasy creatures, all reinventions of classical, even obscure myhtical creatures) and THEN creating a more action focused, dice rolling strategy game around it with roleplaying features is a terrifying feat. ESPECIALLY without prior experiance of Rpgs...

>idea
>pulpy western fantasy setting
>devise factions, characters, the conflict, and a bunch of other random shit
>no idea how to actually string together a half-decent plot to get them from beginning to end
>mfw

Are there snake people?

I can't figure out how to add RPG mechanics and movelists to a punchout clone.
I also am stuck on the GDD at the ninja fight, because it's going to have him drawing runes in POW markers, and I need to figure out what kind of defensive mechanics the boxer can have to block or dodge these things. Possibly just have the rune get drawn out over time and require the player to avoid it as it comes in?

And that's not even to get started on all the coding experience I don't have and am currently trying to get.

There are only humans and zombie cowboys who used to be humans, atm.

Well, 'cowboys.' They're every and all western stereotype you can think of. Currently I've worked on traits for a Not!Mexican noble, a grayback sharpshooter, generic outlaw, and a widow who hides a Volcanic in her skirt.

I've also got ideas for a sapper and a priest, but they haven't really gone anywhere yet.

>no chinese immigrant rail worker class
???

I'm running it. Lovecraftian bullshit, mindflayers&darkest Africa. in 5e

I thought of it, but it doesn't jive with the two major factions. The core conflict is between two religious factions, the Not!Presbyterians and the Not!Catholics and how they handle said zombies.

I don't know how I'd add in an oriental immigrant type character and have it not be just totally out there while also keeping the pulpy nature of the setting.

Oh! That's pretty cool! When you said "western pulp", I thought you meant Conan and Red Sonja

The immigrants think all of you westerners are retarded, but have no say because they are chinese immigrant workers.
The obvious solution is ground tiger dongs. I could sell you some. Very reasonable prices, I assure you.

>tfw I did
>there are no elves
>there are no dwarves
>there is no planet

It's probably not far from that level of absurd, but yeah I meant cowboy western. If you took a bunch of spaghetti western films, Trigun, a bluegrass soundtrack, and a harmonica and threw them all in a blender you'd get something pretty close to what I'm working on.

It's a fun project, I just have no fucking idea where to go with it.

That still doesn't leave anything for them to really do, but then I guess there really wouldn't be enough for an actual faction under the circumstances anyway.

Might work as the sapper character. I'll have to sleep on it. Thanks for the idea, user.

Cause it's not very good and mostly ideas stolen from other people.

Also, you know, University papers

I'm working on a sci fi video game, so far i've got some tentacled cube uber chill guys, some very factionalist bird people, a planet of robots, some ghost guys, and a race of really upbeat dudes who were given misery guts droids so they wouldn't annoy anyone anymore.

Sheer autism.

It's a shitty sci-fi story based on stupid shit I imagined in middle-school, then continued to imagine when I was older and made it darker and edgier. I also draw shitty art for it. I considered using the setting for an RPG but it's really hard to explain aspects of it and also a lot of it is really autistic because I came up with it as a little kid. The only thing that makes it even vaguely Veeky Forums-related is the writing and the fact that I've statted a lot of the characters in GURPS and Savage Worlds.

>do you even have an excuse anymore?

Yes. Laziness.

There are lewd parts as well. Well, one lewd part. Only one sex scene really in the entire book and I only put it in because it felt right for some reason.

>write fiction, mostly short stories
>post them on a website where other authors review your work
>if there's a sex scene you always fade to black
>people start asking why this is
>say I've never had sex, thus I can't write about it
>get laughed out of the community

A good job, a girlfriend and a good hundred of minis to paint.

I am incapable of writing fiction and may be slightly autistic. I mean I can come up with ideas, people say they are good, and I can explain them in an encyclopedic style but I cannot write using any perspective outside of third person omniscient. Also I don't have the time or attention span.

>>there are no elves
>>there are no dwarves
>>there is no planet
>In 2XXX humanity discovered a nearby planet capable of sustaining human life
>Various enterprising individuals united to create a colony ship to reach and settle the planet even though the trip would take 1500 years to each
>The colony ship was assembled in orbit and eventually launched
>Measures 10 miles long and can house over 2 million individuals
>Ship launches with 80,000 crew and passengers
>900 years later you were born as the descendant of one of those original crew or passengers
>You were born on the ship and will die on the ship
I mean it might be pretty interesting.

Damn, that's mean. But, I am the same way. Kissless virgin so I don't really know what sex is like but I don't care about describing it realistic anyway. Also I almost never include it.

pastebin.com/Cg42niFp

See what you think. Not sure if it is obvious i am a virgin

Rate my setting desu

Several hundred years after an occult fueled apocalypse North America has finally become livable once more after a change in the Avaris Curtain. Settlers from mainland china live in city states along the west coast, now having declared independence from imperial rule, and struggle in constant conflict with the barbaric tribes to the south and their rattling smoke belching motored vehicles. Dotting the landscape is pieces more valuable than gold. Rubber, chemicals, perhaps even preserved documents on how to make them lie buried beneath the landscape. The California coast has become hostile, and in recent time the city states unstable after breaking away from control of the Imperial Dynasty. With beasts twisted by strange energies, black oil barbarians, and greedy abhumans abounding how can one make their fortune in this new land?

In summary, chinafornia.
