When were Drow ever really just evil dominatrixes? I was under the impression that near-every setting they were printed in they were printed as an "Evil, sadistic, tortuous, spiders in every orifice" race of backstabbers and cultists.

The whole "You will never be dommed and mindbroken by a sexy Drow priestess" thing always seemed like people who saw "Matriarchal", "Elf" and "Sadist" next to eachother and stopped reading because that's all they needed for their fantasies.

As someone who just finished the first of those Drizzt books and is therefore a huge expert on all things drow, they really didn't seem too weird. They basically just came across as slightly more evil, backstabby elves, nothing like as alien as you described.

Quite possibly. Like I said, I've read one novel on the matter so I'm a complete expert on the subject.

Dunmer are essentially Drow if they completely inverted the ratios of chaotic-stupid. Also they swap out most of the spikey demon aesthetic for weird and wonky alien ones.
