Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. Kickstarter is happening NOW we are kicking ass baby!
Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.
MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials. Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements. It's NOT what's currently on Opaque's website, because Jimmy is Jimmy. mega.nz/#F!S89jTT7J!ozFi9GvzaFGHfBa59Ik2-Q
There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.
It wouldn't. The rules don't cover any sort of formation yet.
Julian Roberts
not even 2v2 or 2v1?
Christian Morales
It can do multiple people in a fight, but not formations. You'll have to homebrew something for formations.
Ethan Green
Bonuses to cross-defend and cross-attack, with + or - depending on how tight or loose the wall is (tight wall better defense, loose wall better attack). Tighter walls would have shield overlap to protect each other as well, loose wall would allow flanking easier.

Lets use our thread Visionary to make Alligator Man

Shopping for a system for my next campaign. Has anyone here run an actual game in this? How play-tested is it?
How well supported would gameplay be in the following two historical periods: Pike and Shot, Wars of Religion style, or the Japanese Warring States period? I'm planning a wargame/rpg hybrid campaign with dynastic elements and my default option is GURPS.
Liam Ramirez
>How well supported would gameplay be in the following two historical periods Very, if you keep it focused on individuals. SoS has no "wargame" mechanics - yet.
As to playtested, quite a lot. We haven't seen a number of complaints resolved yet, but the system as it stands is very usable, if not entirely legible.
I'd look into the ASoIaF game to hit that kind of RPG/Dynastic hybrid.
Daniel Wood
>Has anyone here run an actual game in this? Many people. >How play-tested is it? Three or four years worth now.
It can handle multiple opponents somewhat comfortably if you've learned how to do targets, initiative & declaration/resolution for multibouts.
You also have the option to run a fight for so many rounds before jumping to another fight.
The thread has run quite a few campaigns, particularly one-shots seem to be the most satisfying, so an episodic campaign might be best.
The system is heavily lethal and there is a good chance your players may die a few times
Joshua Brooks
>Very, if you keep it focused on individuals.
That's all I need from the rpg side of things, I'm hacking the wargame part together myself to fulfill my needs. Most wargame stuff is focused on either balanced competition or strict simulation, and while both of those are nice most stuff isn't made for the purpose of crafting encounters for player characters.
Glad to hear it's got good material for Early Modern combat. I'll take a look at the beta for how it deals with guns.
>I'd look into the ASoIaF game to hit that kind of RPG/Dynastic hybrid.
Prior literature is always good to see, I'll see if I can pick it up cheap.
Thanks for the helpful thoughts.
Tyler James
Actually, just pop in the Roll20 and I'll run you through some fights and you can tell me what you think, fellow user

Ye. Guns are very modular to try and cover the range of advances from the 14th through the 17th, with a few later advances tossed in for good measure. Rifles are pretty much always lethal if they hit using straight SoS rules, though an adaption with Ballad shooting rules is in the works that should even things out. Regardless, as it stands, muskets and pistols work about how one would expect them to.
If you're building the wargame yourself, you should be good. Wealth management is a bit sparse in SoS right now, but between the Social Class guidelines and the Boons that are offered, a suitable estate and retinue should be easily homebrewed. Do read the ASOIAF TRPG and get back to us, I'm eager for your thoughts.
Also Take Dion up on his offer. Some good fightan to get the blood up is always a worthwhile exercise.
Nolan Wood
If your homebrewed wargame turns out nice, share it with us.
Evan Nelson
While some of those can be explained by stances and such, you're right that the abstraction breaks down pretty fast. Ballad solves it (how is that game so good?) by making talents universally applicable, so that it doesn't hurt so much to make Talents tied to your highest proficiency, not each proficiency having eigentalents or whatever you wanna call them
Carson Howard
Make sure you use the beta version of 1.9.9
Oliver Price
How would 2B be statted? Keep in mind she weighs 160 kilograms, making her at least three times as dense as a normal human.
Aiden Howard
Not sure if you should stat anime-power level people in this system.
Zachary Russell
-3 Int since she is 3 times as dense
Joseph King
So far Zellish Guts, Rich Man With Dogs, $500 Guy But Magic, the Waifumancer, and now Alligator Man have been proposed. Of course if Khopesh doesn't end up getting that Visionary slot he was offered that is an option.
Charles Watson
If khopesh doesn't get his slot he is the only option.
Jaxon Ramirez
Haki will give Khopesh that slot or I'll kill him myself.
If Haki doesn't then we'll let Khopesh have the slot since his catchphrase is basically the SoS catchphrase now.
Zellish Guts sounds gay Rich Man with Dogs is gay Magic is gay Waifumancer sounded neat Alligatorman the best, I vote him
What is the Tattered Realms version of Florida btw?
Gavin Turner
Zellish Revolver Ocelot is the one true choice But Khop is Hope, and must be immortalized regardless.
Evan Bailey
Honestly, as an Iconic all these ideas are absolutely fucking dogshit. Why not make someone from somewhere we've not heard of to get more succulent lore? Or something like a factotum/battle scholar. We're simultaneously obsessed with lore and dickstabs after all. Or we could just make a waifu like /v/ did.
Lincoln Richardson
Alligators are cuter than Ocelots
checkmate.
Justin Evans
Well, Khopesh is an izagoni.
Nolan Russell
It's Haki's slot? Anyone seen the guy?
Nathan Rodriguez
What do you propose then?
A character building contest?
Are we just going to make this an excuse to beg more lore from Jimmy?
Parker King
Jimmy's already been informed the slot goes to him. Not sure if anything has been finalized
Camden Torres
HAKI! KHOPESHFAG! WE NEED TO KNOW IF YOU DID THE THING!
Lincoln Carter
I don't know, how did /v/ make vivian? What retard is giving us a character slot?
Noah Bailey

Are you retarded on purpose?
Thomas Watson
Zellmuraja?
Jack Moore
I play on Hard Mode in Yoko Taro games so yeah I guess.

My question is whether or not we have a character who's ill-suited to battle yet. I feel like we need someone who would get fucking dismantled in a fight but is a good commander.
Bentley Baker
this is dumb.
We need a guy who eats faces. FACES
Evan Clark
t. memelord
Robert Cook
Time for some real talk. Alligator Man is good and all, but... have you considered a Crocodile Man?
Logan Williams
I'm not opposed to Crocodile Man.
He can be Khopeshes great Rival who splits the desert with the Nile
Joshua Peterson
Why would we settle for an inferior lizzie when we could have the deadliest animal in africa? What I mean is, we need a spelljammeresque Giff. Hippomen obsessed with military. bonus points if we get Gigantic Space Hamsters as mounts for them
Elijah Allen

Jeremiah Russell
What kind of interesting gimmicks can we expect from this Hippo?
Easton Richardson
fat noble that shitposts about "muh honor" but mainly fights with a crossbow and burdinadin supertech

Noblewoman who's [r9k]'s worst nightmare and gives no shits about honor but is strong enough to fight honorably anyway.

A fucking weird ass Crocodile Man who runs around biting people and spends his whole time trolling Khopesh Fag's Pharaoh sounds pretty good to me.
What else are we going to do? Stat out Gizka's clumsy cuck apprentice?
Camden Jenkins
hideous peasant boy with a ridiculously fit right hand
Blake Richardson
We should probably make an instructor as that's mainly what we do here. Teach people the basics of stabbing dick so they can go on to stab bigger and greater dick
Jaxson Brooks
Are we going to name him DionGaryRhade?
Nathaniel Wood
>Prior literature is always good to see, I'll see if I can pick it up cheap. Test before you invest fagit files.catbox.moe/oc9eks.pdf
Elijah Martin
Of course not. We could make them have an aspect of each though if you want.
Brody Kelly
It'd be a nice nod. I think what would represent them best is a Man with an Alligator head that bites your face
Josiah Johnson
You fool, they would be best represented by a Crocodile head.
Andrew Edwards
Shit i knew I forgot to do something, i wanted to back it . . .
Kevin Sullivan
Was wondering what happens when in phase one a 1 vs 1 bout starts and in phase two someone engages that melee bout making it a 2 vs 1 how is initiative handled?
Dominic Sanchez
Presumably their entrance forces people back to bystander and resets the clash count and everyone re-declares orientation and target. If you think that's too much, add them to bout and only the new character declares orientation and target. Maybe make all non-red orientations redeclare.
Zachary Cook
Thanks a reset would be fine I guess.
Caleb Jenkins
Bump for CIS-scum.

Iconic Character Ideas >Genoized Zell adventuring for fairly earned money with which is purchase a ship >Gallian Squire who was knighted as his master died, but no one believes him, so he adventures on Errantry to prove himself >Karthacki Cartographer and Naturalist who is yet another fool seeking to map the world, but also categorize its fauna, monstrous and not >Surviving member of the band of a currently deceased Sarturi Chosen, selling himself as a mercenary in the decadent lands so he can keep spilling blood without persecution >Italian steel monger and wannabe duelist, who cavorts about in a ruthlessly fashionable codpiece and carries twelve different daggers
Fucking Anime Tier >Son of the union of a paladin and a silver guard, who is a rising star in the Purple Guard
Easton Williams
Eyy, What about this shit: Squire sounds promising.
Carson Carter
The squire is good, especially if his master died because something he fucked up.
Parker Walker
Seconded
Bentley Hill
You wouldn't be the first. Give it a shot
Jeremiah Walker
It doesn't sound too hard if you know your dogfighting well, the biggest change would be relative position and speed.
Jose Adams
Ah well you see, ummm. I'm not actually at liberty to discuss the fine detail of what has happened, at the request of other parties.
Just don't worry about it and don't think about, it's fine.
Aaron Anderson
Will this shady backroom drama be the end of Song of Swords?
Kevin Hernandez
How many blades did you have to beat to get it done?
Andrew Ward
By the kings of the Nile I swear it's not shady, it's just a matter of privacy.
It's fine, don't think about it.
Dominic Gray
Well as you know I have many slaves so they will fetch me as many as I please from around the museum archives until I am satisfied.
Sometimes it is one blade for three hours or many blades over just one and one-half. Life is complex in this way, like packing order of slaves bones into the foundation of mighty sphinx.

Weird request, but anyone have good images of those slavic cavalry masks? I need something like the far right, just without all the gold.
Our community is so fucking retarded and I love it.
Easton Edwards
I think an easy way to work with it is have maneuvers that are primarily vertical or horizontal, and in reach simplify it to lead, pure, and lag pursuit angles, with a possibility of an overshoot if a defender does a successful maneuver that would lure the attacker onto an overshoot.
In a similar sense to MP, I'm considering aircraft have bonuses or penalties to their dice pool based on the plane's turn maneuverability and climb rate
Liam Peterson
I've run into a bit of a problem when trying to (re-)stat out 19th century firearms. I've tried to keep things fairly standardized. For muskets I went off half the listed effective range and converted into into meters. If there was a range band, I took the average of it.
With rifles it's harder. Should I just eyeball it? Divide the Springfield range by half, and the rest by one quarter?
On the wiki, the Springfield by contrast has a listed maximum range of 1000 yards (910 meters) and effective range of 200-300 yards. The 1853 Enfield has a maximum firing range of 1140 meters/1250 yards. The Dreyse has a listed effective firing range of 600m/650 yards. The Chassepot has a listed effective (not maximum) firing range of 1200 meters/1300 yards.
I'm tempted to just divide ny listed maximum firing range by three. The Dreyse is supposed to have a comparable firing range to rifle-muskets of its era, but be out-ranged by the Chassepot.
Jaxon Green
That isn't really a weird request around these parts.
Jackson Myers
Something stupid, something he was told to do but shouldn't, or something bravely chivalrous but self-defeating? I'd laugh if it was something like he handed him the wrong weapon, but that wouldn't contribute well to the character.
Jaxson Jones
A combo of the second and third would be good.
Oliver Clark
So, we have some cliches to go on here >Knight orders Squire to retreat (maybe to escort some peasants?), knights him, dies holding off the threat while Squire skedaddles >Squire ranges ahead to do something, gets into it with some skullduggerous blackguards, and the Knight is fatally wounded while rescuing him >Knight and Squire run an errand, it gets dicey, the Knight dies along the way but raises the squire, but when the squire returns the court gossip convinces the lord that the squire was conniving to get the reward himself, and he's run out as a murderer Or something else?
Ayden Powell
Any word on magic yet?
Adrian Wood
How do I give Opaque money if the kickstarter is over.
I want a hard copy of this shit. Throwing money at my monitor isn't working.
James Nguyen
Just move to California and throw money at Jimmy's face. Maybe he will react to that, I'm not sure after 4 years.
