Torment: Tides of Numenera. It's good. Runs off the Pillars engine, but feels different. I have some hope for CRPGs.

I'm not going to the gameplay of Dragon Age 2 was good by any means, but it was better than Baldur's gate et. all, which consisted of blindly clicking on things because you can't see whats going.

Explain this further. At the moment you have given a generalized statement that people often give for Veeky Forums things far more than comic books although it doesn't exactly fit either.

If I may attempt a more in-depth explanation:

What I have come to interprete to be "Capeshit" is a theme in fictional writing that firstly puts flashy, superficial concepts before the implied substance, secondly forces the scale and dimension of the plot/setting to ever greater proportions than originally intended and thirdly that almost always remains in an unsatisfying good vs. evil plot. A fourth point is to always, ALWAYS, give your races superpowers of some sort.

The first point is obvious. Daily do we have threads revolving around "how do you elf?" being filled to the brim with people's attempts of originality, and often enough are they poor colour palette swaps of some kind and rarely something that truly sets them apart from traditional ideas. In tripple A games and pop-fantasy do we find these things just as rampant, where elves, dwarves or any other race are advertised as being different but only through a miniscule detail that doesn't really change them at all from fantastical races in other settings.

The second point is best observed in Marvel/DC trying to bring all superheroes together despite none of them actually having any personal connection at all to fight equally distinct supervillains. What once started as Batman messing up the Joker's organised crime suddenly becomes the latter rallying with Lex Luthor to steal god's cockring to summon satan to cause EVIL while the Justice League must join with their parallel dimensional counterparts to avert the apocalypse. This is not a natural evolution of the story but authors trying to maintain suspense by unnecessarily upping the powerlevel.

The third point is admittedly disputable, as I am aware that people enjoy this more than others. Overall speaking, although I know newer generations of comic books try to make their heroes more edgy and their villains more relatable, the tone remains that we should always root for Superman, Batman, Spiderman and even the Hulk and always hope that Lex Luthor, the Joker, the Green Goblin and whoever is Hulk's archnemesis should lose. It doesn't matter how much their tragic backstory is exposed and their mental workings are being explained, the villains are the villains, while no matter how much the heroes overstep boundaries, they should be liked because their failing in itself is handwaved as a tragedy where the experience alone is punishment enough. In traditional fantasy with its dark lords and evil sorcerors, we find the black/white dichotomy, as well, however in this scenario we are allowed to be unapolectically simple in our perception of our enemy. They are doing shit that puts us at a disadvantage, so we're allowed to stab them with flaming swords. We can wholeheartedly buy into hating the villain and feel genuinely good when he gets necked.

The fourth point is my personal gripe. Fantasy races, and in some instances humans as well, always "need" to have that one racial superpower that allows those elves to levitate and those orcs to summon spines to shoot at enemies and such halflings to propel their feces with a good 40 kmh. While I see this to have good reason in gameplay, I find it an abhorrent concept in fluff, and it galls me even more when fluff is built so strongly around those ingame superpowers that it basically destroys any sense of culture and society. A race that has explicit superpowers to be great stealth archers would never ever develop or integrate into a society that has no more need of such a particular set of abilities, but for some reason are well adjusted and accepted members of the non stealth-archer society.

This is one of the things I liked about the original Torment. It was a high-stakes, high-power campaign, but it wasn't about saving the world. Whether you were good or evil, it was ultimately about saving yourself. And that's why the game let's you play a truly convincingly evil character instead of an edgy anti-hero - you aren't being shoehorned into saving the world by the plot.

Someone else does the actual gameplay (depends on the genre, but I'd honestly give it to either CD-Projekt, 2K Games or maybe Square Enix - I'm not entirely sure).

How slow do you read, dude? That, and you realize that the options were basically picrelated in EVERY dialogue, right?
For me it was a perfect mechanic, to be honest, because it perfectly simulated the dialogue flow and it was cinematic as fuck instead of the usual shit where you took your sweet time, making the dialogue look like two robots conversing.

I couldn't play it either.

First shooting segment popped up, I gave it a try, said 'fuck it' and got a refund on the game.

It's really unfortunate that Obsidian is incapable of making a good original game for shit, even though their writing is stellar.
As for Alpha Protocol, the game heavily favors pistols and stealth. Like, the game becomes infinitely more tolerable if you don't spec into useless shit.

Probably just better to watch it for the story on youtube then.

You miss a LOT if you don't play it proper. There is just a lot of interactions and non-linearity in the game.

The design is a knock-off, the short stories themselves are not and orientate themselves more on original fairy tales
