Played my first game as Chymeriae Blackshields against Coils of the Hydra Alpha Legion today. I actually enjoy Horus Heresy a lot more than I expected to, really. Low unit count kinda fucked me, though; overinvested in having some *big* S6 chainaxe squads and bringing a Lord of War to match his (Fellblade), mixed with bad deployment spelled defeat for me. Plus when Alpharius showed up on turn 4 and one-shotted my Reaver Lord.

Anyone besides me play Blackshields, preferably Chymeriae? How have you seen them work out so far?

With sallies burny bonuses? absolutely, they'll be ups and downs but if you want to make it work that badly then the rules have room for you to make it workable.

Theirs are the best flamers and meltas. If they aren't doing it for you, especially those AP3 S6 Flamestorm cannons the Boxnoughts and Predators can bring, then no flamer weapon will do.
Also, how the hell does having Vulkan's geneseed makes flamers stronger?

Not really, the barrel is much longer than a HB barrel. Tons of people do that conversion to make autocannons for the chaos marines.

As a legion they did not use them at all. Post-heresy, some of their successors do use them, and on at least one occasion, a White Scar requested to be put into a dreadnought so that he could continue to hunt for the CSM who put him there.

It's an easy top 10 in the HH books. Which is surprising because it's not really a major writer, a major legion, or major plot line.

I mostly got screwed by our deployment zone (that spearhead one where you deploy in two triangles, one on each side) and the other guy's Whirlwind Scorpius. Deployment zone kept my short ranged as hell dudes out of range, and the Scorpius took out 11/20 of one squad before I even had my turn 1. Lightning came in on turn 3 and finally killed it, but by then the damage was done.

Speaking of conversion school, what's the best source for one-handed arms for Mk2/Mk3 armor? I'm not a huge fan of cross-chest holds from a modeling perspective, and most of my force is either double pistols or pistol/CCW. Using cut down bolters for Pariah bolters anyway, so I'd like to one hand those if I can, but I think it's just Assault, Destroyer (not in my armor mark), and Despoiler units that have the arms posed so I could do it.
